(LUKE) MULHOLLAND NEWSLETTER, NO. 1, APRIL 2008

It has been a busy and productive year so far for me. This past fall, I was fortunate enough to gain admittance to the renowned Berklee Music College in Boston (www.berklee.edu) to pursue an advanced musical education. I focused the fall term on my studies in basic music, arts and guitar.

After scoring well on my exams, winter semester I started to specialize on a degree in songwriting and I began the difficult task of re-forming my band, Mulholland Drive, with Boston-based players. After a couple months, I was able to assemble a tight, musically talented group with bass player Chris Murphy, drummer and former Berklee student Jayme Tardiff and rounded out by keyboardist Eli Winderman.

After several months holed up in Boston's Jam Spot, we have emerged tight and ready to go with setlists of my songs that traverse my rock, pop-rock and blues-rock originals and, of course, some favorite Mulholland Drive originals.

In March of this year, I was very fortunate to be signed by well-known Boston booking agent Alex Ross of Supreme Entertainment Artists and Venue Promotions Management, and Jon Bergen of Bender Music Group, out of Phoenix Arizona.

With solid players and management team, we will look to play throughout the Northeast this spring. To view specific club and tour dates, please visit my website at www.lukemulholland.com and sign up as a friend and send your friends to www.myspace.com/lukemulhollandmusic.

We look for exciting things for this spring and summer, SO, STAY TUNED!.....and TURN IT UP!!
Cheers!

Luke Mulholland

YOAV - May 3 & 4

Imagine a record that matches the leftfield edge of Beck or Radiohead with the kind of sure-footed pop hooks Justin Timberlake's people would write a blank cheque for. A record which vividly conjures the life of an insightful outsider, set to the dark, loping rhythms of Massive Attack or Portishead. A record built around a voice that's as sweetly expressive as it is richly soulful. Then imagine that every single sound of it, including the bass & the drums, is performed by one man on his amazingly versatile guitar. That record is YOAV’s Charmed & Strange.

With the worldwide hit, "Club Thing", YOAV returns to Edmonton and also makes his first appearance in Calgary on Saturday, May 3, 2008.

The ethereal vocals of Margo Timmins and languid guitar sounds of Cowboy Junkies make their music instantly recognizable to their many fans. This critically acclaimed group will be appearing in Edmonton on June 25 at the McDougall United Church.

The band is formed by siblings Margo (vocals), Michael (guitar and songwriter), and Peter Timmins (drums) with Alan Anton (bass). They also frequently perform and record with Jeff Bird. They are a cult phenomenon in Canada but have had limited success internationally except for the original Trinity Session recording.

Although originally the band's name was chosen because it sounded cool, it has become pretty appropriate, as their music has elements of traditional country, blues and folk but wrapped in a kind of narcotic trance of lethargic tempos colored by the influence of such groups as the Velvet Underground and the British avant-garde rhythms that Michael and Alan were exposed to during a brief period of living and working in the UK.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the seminal Junkies Album, The Trinity Session, and they have revisited Toronto’s Trinity Church with the perspective of twenty years' experience. According to Michael Timmins, "We enlisted a few musicians for whom the Trinity Session had some personal and professional resonance and whose individual work resonates with us."

Joined by Ryan Adams, Vic Chesnutt, Natalie Merchant and long-time cohort Jeff Bird, Cowboy Junkies dedicated themselves to a fresh exploration of The Trinity Session songs and the result is Cowboy Junkies Trinity Revisited DVD/CD.

They have taken this updated vision on the road and will be presenting the entire Trinity Session and some additional material at McDougall United Church in Edmonton on June 25.

Apr. 20 - 8 p.m.

Marie-Josée Houle and others play a kNOw Uranium Mines Event at the Bayou!

This show is a benefit concert for the activist group, "kNOw Uranium Mines" (http://know-uranium.org/). They’re organizing against the exploitation of an archaic Mining Act law that gives mining companies the ability to exploit mineral deposits on First Nations land. Also, the uranium deposits are small and require a lot of on-site processing, which would lead to contamination of the watershed. There was a brief overview in UpFront, so you might want to check that out or contact the lobby group for more information. At the show, there will be speakers and a petition or mass form letter campaign.

We will be in Nevada and Northern California the last part of May and first day of June! We'll be in Minden, NV, on May 30th, Sutter Creek Theater on the 31st, and at Headfeathers in Napa on June 1st. Pertinent information is on the website at www.alicestuart.com.

Sure hope to see some of my California friends this trip! It's the weekend after Strawberry, so you'll be all fired up after hearing all the great music there. We hope to be back at Strawberry one of these days, too! You can help by putting our name in the 'suggestion box' at Strawberry.

We will be going to Nova Scotia next year for some festival dates and we would like to spread our music to as many places as we can, so if you have a suggestion of a festival or venue that we should approach, don't hesitate to send the info to me!

GET-WELL WISHES FOR BLUES PIANIST ANN RABSON

Hi, All:

Our good friend, Ann Rabson, who is as generous as she is talented, is having some health concerns. If you are a friend to the blues, please drop her an e-mail or card and wish her a fast recovery. You can e-mail her at ann@annrabson.com or write to her at: Ann Rabson, P.O. Box 167, Hartwood,VA 22471.

Ann recorded a wonderful CD for us, called Struttin' My Stuff, and also performed on our Blues Music Award-winning and Grammy-nominated CD, Ladies Man, by Pinetop Perkins.

Ann Rabson has had a stretch of bad luck beginning last fall, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In early December, before she was able to have the necessary surgery, she suffered a perforated intestine and spent nearly two months in the hospital. Once home, Ann made a rapid recovery, preparing for lumpectomies and follow-up treatment, and resuming her performance schedule, which included this year's Blues Music Awards show. But her doctors have now discovered a malignant tumor in a kidney. Surgery to remove that kidney, along with the postponed breast cancer surgery, is scheduled for late April, so, to her great disappointment, she won't be back on her feet in time to attend the Blues Music Awards.
Ann has followed her passion of playing the blues since 1962, when she began her professional career in the music business. She is admired and respected as a songwriter, piano player, guitarist and entertainer. Ann is a nine-time Blues Music Award nominee, and this year is nominated for "Pinetop Perkins' Piano Player of the Year".

Thanks.

CAMILLE MILLER TO RELEASE SOMEWHERE NEAR THE TRUTH CD

Camille Miller found an outlet in music at a young age, to communicate her teenage frustrations growing up an "army brat", constantly on the move. Born in Germany but raised on military bases all over Canada, Miller's earliest influences were not her myriad surroundings but the music in which she took solace: Motown, Carly Simon, The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, and The Rolling Stones.

Now based in Vancouver, BC, Miller put out her first solo album in 1998. 2002 saw the release of She Knows, on Synergy Records, from which she had two songs appear on the popular TV series, "Cold Squad".

After touring the UK three times, Miller caught the ear of England's Sugar Shack Records, who put out her third album, Carnarvon Street, in 2005. Camille has lent her talents to other artists' works, including vocals for the song, "Lost", by American electronic group Baligomingo, and also co-writing, singing and live touring for Robert Chojnacki's 2006 album, Saxophonic, released on BMG inPoland. From these tours with Chojnacki, Camille is one of the only artists to be able to truly say she's "huge in Poland", having built up a fan base there, playing twice a year in Warsaw now.

Miller's vocal style has been described as "stunning" and "effortless", while her guitar work has been dubbed "flawless". She writes vignettes that straddle pop, rock and alternative genres, at home alongside a record collection that features Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, The Pretenders, or The Dixie Chicks.

Miller's latest offering, Somewhere Near The Truth, will be released April 22nd on Sound of Pop Inc., distributed in Canada through Fontana North (Universal). The lead-off single, "I'll Be Good", is currently being serviced Canada-wide to Hot AC/CHR radio. Somewhere Near The Truth is a diary of love, lust, regret and the joys of couch surfing while on tour. Which isn't far off from military house surfing, when you think about it...

Vancouverites can catch CAMILLE MILLER showing off tunes from her new disc at The Railway Club on Thursday, May 1st, at 9:30 p.m. A Toronto show will follow in the summer, as well as an east coast tour.

To request a review copy of CAMILLE MILLER's new CD, or to set up an interview, please contact Karen Pace at Pacemaker Pro, 416-918-6525, karen@gokarenpace.com.

IN MEMORIAM

We sadly mourn the loss of Steve Thompson and Jeff Healey this year. Bass player Steve Thompson, an early Bluesbreaker, died early this year of complications from a lung infection. Guitar player Jeff Healey, who was featured on 2001's Along For The Ride album, passed away in March from leukemia.

OTTAWA AUTHOR RICK MOFINA @ OTTAWA PUBLIC LIBARY - APR. 30

Hi, everyone.

Update on newest book, SIX SECONDS (SS) - only 8.5 months until release!

Progress continues on SS. A cover concept has been done, it’s coming along nicely and I’ll be reviewing the proofs soon. As mentioned, we hope to produce a sampler by the end of next month. The sampler will feature the cover and the opening chapters of the book, up to two or three. We’ll be presenting the sampler free at Book Expo America (BEA) in Los Angeles, which runs May 29-June 1.

Check the appearance page of my site and this newsletter for updates. I have two BEA booth signings confirmed for Saturday, May 31. Others will be added. I hope to retain a few copies of the sampler to offer to you through draws leading up to the release of SS.

Canadian (Toronto/Ottawa) Happenings

On the more immediate and local front, Tuesday I’ll be joining, by invitation over the phone, the discussion of A PERFECT GRAVE by a book club in TORONTO, Ontario, Canada. This is an emerging trend, as other author friends have participated over the phone, or online with book clubs interested in having them join as guests to discuss their work. I’ve done it in person with clubs and will entertain invitations for over the phone and online book club and library groups. Something to consider.

As for my next appearance, that will be Wednesday, April 30, 7 pm, at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library. I’ll be on a panel discussing the Arthur Ellis Awards. For those of you on FACEBOOK, I have joined, so drop by and tell friends to drop by. However, my preferred way of communicating with you, those who enjoy my work and have been so supportive, is through this newsletter, direct from me to you. I don’t mind if you share this newsletter with your library, reading groups, book clubs, chat rooms.

OTHER APPEARANCES UPDATES

I plan to be in Omaha, Nebraska, May 22-25, for "Mayhem in the Midlands", so if you’re in the neighborhood, consider dropping by or watch for local announcements, as a number of authors, yours truly included, are to be visiting some local bookstores. And as part of my plan to be in Toronto June 15 for Book Expo Canada (BEC). I may be signing at local Chapters-Coles-Indigo in Toronto on Saturday, June 14. So, if you’re in Toronto, stay tuned for confirmation. I’ll have some news on some short stories coming later this year. I’ve written three new ones and a fourth is in the works.

Now for some news on the fun stuff

WINNERS:

Congratulations to Michael Brent - Sacramento-area, California. Michael attended the Left Coast Crime Conference in Denver recently, where he was the successful bidder at a charity auction to have a character named after him in my 10th novel. This book is the one I am now writing. It is to be released in the fall of 2009 and will launch a new series. I will tell you all now that, if you like my Tom Reed and Jason Wade characters, you will like this new series.

Congratulations to Donna L. - Milwaukee, WI. Donna was the winner in last month’s newsletter draw. A signed copy of A Perfect Grave is snailing its way to Wisconsin.

Congratulations to Kenny H. - Lexington, KY. Kenny was the winner in my draw for those who joined as a new subscriber through the new network, CrimeSpace.

http://crimespace.ning.com/

A signed copy of A Perfect Grave, is snailing its way to Kentucky.

The Winner of the March draw for a signed copy of BE MINE, done on Stacy Alesi's excellent website, www.bookbitch.com (or the BookB, as I call her) will be announced soon.

APRIL DRAW - EXCLUSIVE TO MEMBERS OF MY NEWSLETTER

This is a little different. I am offering you something that is relatively rare. I have a copies of ARCs - advanced reading copies. An ARC has no finished cover, but is a fully bound set of uncorrected proofs in the same size and format as the finished rack size paperback. Some call them collector’s items, as they are not to be sold - they are sent to reviewers 2-3 months before release. I have a number of them and I am going to put one up for draw now. It is the ARC for COLD FEAR. The cover is robin-egg blue, with no illustration. If you would like to enter the draw for a chance to win a free autographed copy of an ARC for COLD FEAR, my second book in the Tom Reed series, then send me an email @ rick@rickmofina.com and be sure the subject line reads: "ARC COLD FEAR", or your entry could go astray. The draw closes April 26, 2008. If things go well, I may run another draw later this month.

Thank you, everyone!

As always, I enjoy hearing from you - stay tuned for more news, offers and events.

Rick

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON

Every Saturday night - 9:45ish - no cover

This week's featured guests: SAT. APRIL 19TH - DANNY MARKS

Danny is a recent recipient of the prestigious Maple Blues Award, "Blues with a Feeling for Lifetime Achievement" from the Toronto Blues Society. This iconic rocker's roots go back to the '60s as a founding member of the Capitol Records group, Edward Bear.

After a span as a journeyman session musician throughout the '70s, he settled into the club scene, establishing a cult following as a genre bender in music and humour. A house band gig at Toronto's famed Albert's Hall led him to host his own nationwide TV show, "Stormy Monday".

Through the '80s, Danny starred in the CBC Radio hit series "The Hum Line". Most recently, he has recorded two original music albums, Guitarchaeology and True, before paying tribute to Toronto's R&B roots with Big Town Boy in 2005.

Danny Marks is in his sixth year as radio host of "bluz.fm" every Saturday night from 8 o'clock to midnight on JAZZ.FM91. Obviously he's got the night off from radio and we're lucky to have him join us at the Ank for the first time.

This should be another great night. Please join us.
