HELLHOLE BOOK LAUNCH RAISES $5,000 FOR FIREFIGHTERS

Thanks to you, we were able to raise close to $5,000 for the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation at the book launch party for HELL HOLE, held at the Engine 23 Firehouse in New York. Special thanks to those who bid on character names to appear in MIND SCRAMBLER. The auction brought in $2,100 when author Chris Grabenstein "sold" two names and one of the bidders worked for a company (go, American Express) that would match her charitable contribution.

Chris Grabenstein (seated) with bookmark assistant Hailey and book buyer
Double special thanks to St. Martin's Minotaur for donating so many books to the cause and to my beloved wife, J.J., for saying, "Sure, go ahead and donate a bunch from us, too!" Thanks to Captain Morkal and the firefighters who whipped up two huge vats of firehouse chili (12 pounds of ground turkey and sixteen cans of beans). It was all gone by the end of the party and it was 90 degrees in the firehouse garage.

Captain Dave Morkal and daughter Meghan (one of the very first readers of THE CROSSROADS, she is one of the three people the book is dedicated to)

Thanks again for helping raise so much money for an incredible charity!

Politique
"Fresh off the release of the debut CD, Politique return to tear it up @ Zaphod's! A sordid love-triangle of bittersweet indie, synth punk and electro conspire to wrap you up in this debut! The CD is quickly running up the top-ten charts on Canadian campus radio and the band is gearing up for a mini-tour and late summer festivals. With respectful nods to the past and wide-eyed optimism to the future in songs like "Drifter", "She Makes My Mind Smile" to the sexed-up electro-nihilism of "Old War, Cold War", the ironic, jangly guitar pop of "Young, Fast, Stupid", this definitely ain't your daddy's new wave…
The focus of Politique is pure pop bliss - quick, in-your-face melodies, indie energy without
too much gloss, and dance punk rawness. Mallory makes the vocals swoon. Etienne pushes the beats into the red. Richard layers on angular, wire-y guitar everywhere. Roland whips up the Moogs and bass...

Politique is very much of the moment. And a disc that gains strength with each listen. Credit that at least in part to backgrounds as varied as one-time punk-rocker Giles and longtime Liquified leader Roland Marckwort's years as a techno-trance DJ and producer. Add to the mix guitarist Richard Bennett's melodic fills and drummer Étienne Sylvain, one has more here than initially meets the ear. Which bodes well for Politique's future -- a future that indeed looks bright." Ottawa Sun, June 17

"This Ottawa foursome gives their electro pop compositions bounce - there’s a slinky swagger to these proceedings that, live, would definitely light up a dance floor. “Fragility Is Not Frailty” is the most rock-based thing here and it pulls together elements of indie and a dash of dark ’80s post-punk, while “Loveless” is the most enjoyably frenetic, with its smattering of bloopy sounds and intense cymbals. Politique also recall Metric’s finer moments on the addictive “She Makes My Mind Smile.” Exclaim, July 2008

"With a beat base, the 11 songs on Politique's self-titled debut draw a line to Blondie, Stars and Controller. Controller, tipping hats to New Order and My Bloody Valentine along the way. Thanks to countless singles (songs) and duos (people) that have melded dance beats with rock, musical snobberies have fallen by the wayside - Politique makes for a kind of jagged sound that is textured, referential and wholly sweet on the ears.
It's not bad for dancing, either!" Ottawa Citizen, June 18

Available June 24, 2008 @ iTunes and indie stores

Hexes+ Ohs

The story behind the Montreal-based electropop duo begins with a pair of highschool sweethearts and spans a decade of couplehood, musical projects and everything in between. 2005 saw the release of their debut album, Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover, on Noise Factory Records. This was the first full-length effort Edmund and Heidi had ever attempted and they were happy with the results. There were no distractions, just the two of them in their apartment strumming guitars, singing songs, turning knobs and pressing record.
Three years have passed, and the little album they created in their apartment has taken them to places they never expected, playing showcases at CMJ, Pop Montreal, Canadian Music Week, North By North East, Ladyfest, Halifax Pop Explosion and the CBC radio 3 national tour, opening for Mates of State, Sloan, Ivy, Au Revoir Simone, as well as Tokyo Police Club, Pony Up! and Most Serene Republic. Furthering the unexpected, Hexes & Ohs’ debut album topped Canadian campus radio charts, reaching the 2nd position nationally and remained in the top 10 for several months.

Now, fast-forward to 2008, they’ve played a lot of shows, Edmund and Heidi have done a lot of growing up. They’ve taken to the art of performance. The once shoe-gazing lap-popping duo have become an energetic live force to be reckoned with. Sharing duties on vocals, guitars, laptop, synths, bass and drums, packing surprises into every song and with this newfound confidence, the duo’s new songs benefitted. Melodies became sharper, song-structures bolder and the musicianship was more inspired than ever. Most important of all, they discovered how to write a great hook without losing the intricacies and depth that has brought them this far. Look for Hexes & Ohs’ new album, Bedroom Madness, out September 2, 2008.

Nightwood

Montréal's Nightwood is a love affair for three, a sonically sweet, terse perversion, a single-minded and uncomprimising indie rock trio. Long-time collaborators Erin Ross and Amber Goodwyn come together with recent addition, “Famous” Eric Lapointe to deliver their first mini-album, Big City (GREN018), on Montréal indie label Grenadine Records.
Nightwood takes its cues from Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Low, modern literature, porn and cinema (e.g. "Night of the Hunter", "The Hunger" and "First Blood").

REWARD OFFERED FOR STOLEN BASS GUITAR

Hi, friends.

I'm trying to get this out to as many musicians in the Toronto area as possible...your help would be extremely appreciated. On Wednesday, July 16th, 2008, my beautiful bass was taken from the College and Dovercourt area. Not only was this bass exquisitely made, and one of a kind, but after having it stolen, I realize how much of a soulmate it was for me. I'm including a few pictures of the bass (see below). The good news is that it is literally one-of-a-kind, so if you see a bass that looks even remotely like this one, it's my bass - a 6-string, Dingwall with fanned frets and a gorgeous maple finish.

Of course there is a reward for information ending in the return of the bass. So I'm asking for your help in 2 small ways: - Forward this message to everyone you know in the Greater Toronto Area music community (or beyond). If we have every musician in the GTA knowing what my bass looks like, there's nowhere to hide with this thing, except to ship it far away. Please keep an eye out for it. As I said, this bass is one-of-a-kind.

If you see someone playing it, or even see a black soft bass case that says 'Dingwall' in gold on the back (and it's not being carried by a select few bass-playing heavies that we all know already), let me know immediately, either by email [see below] or by phone, 416-524-2360.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. Let's get my bass back!!!!

Ben Miller

[Message forwarded by Mark Sepic - email info re the bass to carlocoppola@sympatico.ca.]

These girls have one thing in mind. . .pay homage to Led Zeppelin, one of the best rock bands ever, and have a blast doing it! Formed in January 2006 in Los Angeles, California, Moby Chick is Southern California's foremost all-girl Led Zeppelin tribute band. Its four members came together with one goal in mind: to pay homage to one of the best bands ever to grace the rock world and have a blast doing it! In December 2006, Moby Chick won Rock City News Award for best female cover band in Los Angeles.
Cherish Alexander (bass) - Best Female Solo Artist at the Rock City News Awards! Cherish has had her music featured in many TV/Movies including The Crow, PBS, Lifetime, E! Entertainment and CBS. Her performance credits include the X Games Tour, 2 Cyndi Lauper music videos and touring across the United States with the rock band, the Painkillers.
Nikki Lane (drums) - Nikki Lane Taylor, AKA "The Nikster", is recognized as a professional drummer/vocalist for hire, notorious for her rock-n-roll persona, and hard-hitting versatility. Nikki was given her first drum set, when she was three years old, by her father, Mel Taylor (Graduate of Berklee School of Music) & she's been hitting the skins ever since. After relocating to L.A. in 1995 she studied with Mike Manginni (Steve Vai & Extreme), Ivan De Prume (White Zombie), Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction) & Bobby Rock (session drummer). THE DONNAS
This may be the world's best all-female rock band! Headlining the show, direct from their sold-out Australian tour will be Atlantic recording artists The Donnas!
According to Steve Huey, writing for MTV, "The Donnas won a cult following and considerable media attention in the late '90s after scoring a record deal right out of high school. Early on, they were described as 'The Ramones meet the Runaways.' Their bratty high school delinquent songs concerned themselves mostly with boys, booze, drugs, and hated classmates. As the band grew up and polished their technical abilities, their music evolved into a distinctly female take on cock-rock metal, drawing more from AC/DC, Kiss andMotley Crue".
The band was formed in May of 1993, when the four members (all born in 1979) were still in the eighth grade together in Palo Alto, California. They entered a junior-high battle of the bands just one month after forming the band. During high school, they practiced virtually every afternoon, and soon moved into riot girl territory. Later, the girls created Ramones alter egos and started calling themselves 'The Donnas'. For a time, vocalist Brett Anderson, guitarist Allison Robertson, bassist Maya Ford, and drummer Torry Castellano called themselves Donna A., Donna R., Donna F., and Donna C.
In 1997, The Donnas recorded their self-titled debut album. Following its release, the four took off from their senior year of high school to tour Japan. After graduation, they postponed college and recorded a second album, which was released in early 1998. The Donnas quickly became underground punk favorites, gathering attention from MTV as well as the mainstream media.
The group's third album, Get Skintight, appeared in 1999. Spend the Night arrived in 2002 and broke into the top of the charts. It also earned them their biggest radio hit to-date, "Take It Off".
The Donnas' appearance at Galt Airport on August 9th comes on the heels of the group's whirlwind tour of Australia, which included sold-out performances in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sidney and Perth. The Donnas are arguably the hottest, most successful all-female rock & roll band in the world today. Their show here in the Woodstock area is not to be missed. This will be one to remember!
"Chicks Rule/Rock" is sponsored in part by Woodstock Harley Davidson, Star 105.5, 95 WIIL Rock, Extreme Auto Group, R & S Motorsports, Spitson Masonry, Jett's Heating and Air, Southern Breeze Entertainment and Wassup! Magazine.
Order tickets online at Ticketmaster.com, at all Ticketmaster outlets, including Carson Pirie Scott, Hot Tix, and FYE stores. To charge tickets by phone, call 312. 559.1212. SEB AGNELLO RELEASES TAKE YOUR LUMPS (REVIEW BY JAMES MARCK)

"Take Your Lumps", Seb's ninth self-produced CD, presents 11 new songs from the man the politically correct love to hate. It jumps musical borders from country to punk to folk and rock without sacrificing a shred of credibility. Listen to the lead-in track "I'm Uma Pemmaraju". Here Sebastian takes the newscaster's top stories and dumps them into a jaunty, guitar-driven romp that belies the awful weight of the nightly headlines. At a time when a "protester'' ought to close ranks with the popular tide of opinion, Seb tells us to "Stop Picking On America'' ("and America will stop picking on you"). "Me & God" suggests that God sides with a humble country picker and if He had His druthers He' d be playing a Gibson like He intended decent people ought to. What the hell?

We get vignettes of girl troubles ("T.O. Girl Of My Youth"), families' troubles ("I Love My TV"), politician's troubles ("Government Policy") neighbours' troubles ("Neighbours"), political bigotry troubles ("Liberal Myths, Conservative Lies") and the trouble we all have figuring out a troubling world. It'd be bad news all 'round without Seb's disarming wit and wry sense of fair play that mirrors life's magnificent ironies.

FRINGE LOCALS REUNION @ NRS SATURDAY MUSICAL IMPROV. - JULY 26

The Niagara Rhythm Section featuring really great guests you've probably never heard of...

Every Saturday night - 9:45ish - no cover

The Anchorage, 186 Ricardo St. Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, 905-468-2141

This week: SAT. JULY 26TH - THE FRINGE LOCALS REUNION

Yep, once or twice a year the original band, Steve Goldberger, Eric Mahar, Dave Norris, Penner MacKay & Herb Nelson, reunite to play songs from our 4 CDs, plus a bunch of other golden nuggets that we've enjoyed doing since we got together back in 1995.

Here's what some folks have said about The Fringe Locals over the years:

"...the nerve to be different..." - Don Campau - KKUP 91.5FM, Cupertino California

"...he has made the "Niagara Sound" more Niagara..." - James Brown, Pulse Niagara

"...A tasty sample of musical gumbo is served up when Steve Goldberger & The Fringe Locals play their southern-fried cover versions and trans-cultural originals..." - Nick Baxter-Moore, Niagara Current Magazine

"Bits of acoustic folk, ersatz California country pop, New Orleans swamp rock, Celtic airs and raucous pub rock float up to the surface of this stew, truly an amalgam of alien parts. For all that, an infectious good humour and energetic teamwork lend this record, GUMBO DREAMS, genuine appeal." - Greg Quill, Toronto Star

"Steve Goldberger's subversive THE NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE RHYTHM PROJECT ... the sounds on this disc are beautiful free flowing instrumental illustrations of life in tourist heaven...A sort of mash up of folk, soft rock and jazz combined in the aesthetic of a jam band... get your hands on this disc and wrap your head around the sounds." - Pulse Niagara

"... We had a great time last nite. I never stay for 3 sets as most times I'm bored with the material, but your original tunes were fun and funky and put a grin on my face. You guys set up such a fat groove last nite, I can't remember when I've heard a live band lay it down so tight. Good acoustics and overall balance last nite. Bass sounded solid and not boomy.. Good time for sure." - George Richardson - Toronto

"...Bonjour! I just wanted to let you know that his new album is out and it rocks! It's called Gumbo Dreams and sounds just like its name - A great cocktail of original songs with original sounds." -Herve Oudet, "Americana in Paris" Radio Show, Paris, France

"...His voice and the music is as comfortable as a pair of good, broken-in Levis and he and his band, the Fringe Locals, are obviously having a GREAT time making their music ...." - C.L. in Atlanta

"I put on the SG & the Fringe Locals' Clueless, and I was blown away. That is one high quality, well-crafted collection of tunes. I will be listening to it regularly for the next few days. " - Mike Furnish, CKUW 95.9FM, Winnipeg, MB

"I've got several tracks earmarked for airplay. Nice work again, Steve." - Don Campau, KKUP 91.5 Cutertino, California

"The CD BLEW ME AWAY !!!! Great job." - Simon Fogel, Toronto

"You bastard! What a wonderful CD. It is so freakin' musical. It is no mean feat to be as prolific as you are and as good as you are. Serious congratulations, Steve. You should be very proud. I have now placed it in heavy rotation." - Bill Colgate, Toronto

"Good stuff; the more I hear your newest collection the more it really grows on me. I think you have stretched your personal range here and it is exciting to watch talents rearrange themselves over time." - Rod Hillier, Niagara-on-the-Lake

"Hey, Steve. Congratulations on producing just about the most eclectic CD I've come across! Really great job!" - W.K.- Toronto

"The music is working just fine, great writing, great playing, great singing, great philosophy, no regrets" - J.W. - Toronto

"I'm listening to it right now, and it's a real keeper! There's plenty of tracks we can give airplay to. And we'll be hugely pleased to do that. ... your songwriting's great. Cheers." Eddie O'Strange [Town & Country Radio] New Zealand

"Steve, I listened to your CD all the way back to Rochester, NY, yesterday.....and it was blaring on the way into work this morning. I love it!!!!! We had a great weekend. Niagara-on-the-Lake is absolutely beautiful! Seeing, hearing and meeting you and the band was an added bonus to our weekend. We'll be sure to schedule our next trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake on a weekend that you're playing there." Karen, Rochester, New York

"Hi, Steve...out of this world and the vibe is killer on both CDs. I love hearing Eric Mahar play ... and you can tell him that! I think my favourite track is Gumbo Dreams ... but I'll get back to you on that." - Mark Inneo (a really great drummer)

Ok, so there's lots more, but I think that's enough. Anyway, we don't get the chance to do this very often, so if you can join us, we'd love for you to share in our fun.

Steve

SEB @ GARY 17'S NEW OPEN STAGE - JULY 24 (KRAMER'S - TORONTO)

Sebastian to showcase at my new open stage Thurs., July 24.

Great news! I’ve just confirmed that Sebastian Agnello will be the debut showcase feature at the first installment of my new Thursday night open stage at Kramer’s Bar & Grill, 1915 Yonge St., across the corner from Davisville subway station in lovely uptown Toronto.

The show will run each week from 9:30 till 2 a.m. and the club offers ½-price appetizers all night long. Naturally I’ll be spinning tracks from discs by local and Canadian bands and singer-songwriters between live spots and I’ll have a house guitar and house keyboard available for use by participants.

It all starts this week, Thursday, July 24, on the street-level front room of this cozy club with two patios. Sebastian’s set will commence about 11 p.m. Be there or be square!

PHOTOS FROM BLUESFEST INTERNATIONAL - JULY 10-13/08
[Excerpt from Bluesblast Magazine - http://www.illinoisblues.com/]

Hey, Blues Fans.

Last weekend we traveled all the way to Windsor, Ontario, to see Bluesfest International, a great four-day Canadian Blues fest. Windsor is a cool city just across the river from Detroit, Michigan, and the fest is held on the riverfront with the Detroit skyline as the backdrop (see photo below). Lineup included Taj Mahal, Rick Derringer, Woodstock Legend Richie Havens, 2008 Blues Blast Music Award Nominee John Nemeth, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, David Wilcox, Ana Popovic, Eric Sardinas, Larry McCray and much more! There will be a special tribute to Jeff Healey by "Jeff Healey's Blues Band" with special guests Jerome Godboo, Tony Springer & more. Fest promoter Ted Boomer and his wife Louise really know how to put on a great event. The fest ran as smoothly as clockwork and to make matters even more impressive they were simultaneously holding another second version of the Bluesfest International in London, Ontario.
