MORE SUPPORT LETTERS NEEDED FOR DAWG FM (CDN. BLUES RADIO)

Hi, fans of Blues radio and DAWG FM.

I hate to ask again; I hope this is the last time. The CRTC has informed us that they want support letters to talk specifically about how the Official Language Minority Community will benefit from our station.

We have prepared a support letter at www.Bluesincanada.com. This is a new letter, so if you have sent a previous letter, please go to the site again and send this letter. Click on the "Save DAWG FM" button to send a letter of support to the CRTC. The deadline is February 12th.

This is a new letter, so we are asking everyone who has sent one previously to send another. You will get a failure letter from the CRTC, but do not worry, as we will be uploading these letters to the CRTC website and they will become public for everyone to review.

It’s even better if you go directly to the CRTC and write comments on their form. Here is the link: http://support.crtc.gc.ca/rapidscin/default.aspx?lang=en&applicant=2009-2

You have to click on the application by Frank Torres OBCI to support DAWG FM.

If you wish to send a letter en francais, I am including some sample text below.

The applications for Ottawa will be re-heard at a public hearing at the end of March. I thank you all for the many letters you have written to support the Blues.

Please feel free to send a copy to your Member of Parliament, or anyone else at Canadian Heritage, Industry Canada, or anyone in government. Please send this to all of your address book, friends, family. Every letter counts.

Thanks.

Ed

Cordialement,

TANNIS SLIMMON - JANUARY 2009 NEWSLETTER

It has been an exhilarating week for the world with so much hope and positive thinking in the air. I thought it was a perfect time to bring greetings to you, my friends, family & folks. Welcome to all those I've met recently and my deep thanks for all the kind wishes sent since the Contemporary Vocalist of the Year award in November, my new license to sing!

News, briefly:

1. Big concert this weekend as guest artist with Open Voice Choir in Kingston, ON
2. Another award for 'Lucky Blue' - the Golden Porcupine Award
3. Distribution deal for 'Lucky Blue' - album now available to all Canadian music stores
4. Home Routes house concert tour in Southern Ontario
5. New links in the 'Gallery' on my website (including podcast, pictures and exciting video taken in Newfoundland)

....plus shows, glorious shows.... My website tannis.ca is a good source for all news, new or old.

In more detail:
________________________________________________________________________________________

1. The moments are ticking away in the lead-up to one of the most exciting concerts I've ever had as a guest vocalist with the Open Voices Choir on Saturday in Kingston. This powerful 120 voice community choir is lead by the dynamic Andy Rush. Little did we know when he and I first talked of setting a gospel feel for the concert, that it would be so appropriate for this historic week. The choir will back me up on 3 tunes, including 'There's A Lift' which Andy scored in 2004 for the 'Blue Skies Festival' choir. And I'll sing solo parts on a number of the choir's pieces such as 'Heaven Help Us All' and 'Amazing Grace'. Since seeing the movie Amazing Grace, this song has an even deeper and richer meaning for me.
Concert details are at the bottom of this message, but also available on my website's shows page.
________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Lucky Blue has been honoured again, this time by CIUT radio show host Steve Fruitman's 19th annual Porcupine Awards. I have great respect for Steve; he's one of Canada's most knowledgeable folk musicologists so I feel deeply honoured to receive The Golden Quill award for Songwriting. Recipients of all of this year's awards and Steve's interesting descriptions of why he chose them are here.

________________________________________________________________________________________

3. The time has finally come when you can walk into any music store in Canada and buy my album! Ask your dealer to contact Outside Music for 'Lucky Blue' if it's not already in the store. Outside is a very happening company, and it's great that they are distributing a folkie like myself, who has always been a bit 'outside'.
________________________________________________________________________________________

4. House concerts are one of my favourite places to perform! Anyone who has been to one will know that they are a very intimate way in which to enjoy live acoustic music. Mitch Podoluk, the founder of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, conceived Home Routes with the welfare of musicians in mind as well, by creating 'tours' of up to 12 house concerts virtually in a row. These tours have been flourishing in the Prairies, but a southern Ontario 'route' is now being developed and I'm thrilled to be doing one of the first in March....Toronto, Erin, Orangeville, Penetanguishene, Ashburn, details at the bottom, but also on my shows page. Home Routes is looking for more concert hosts in this area for the future, so if you're interested, visit their website.
________________________________________________________________________________________

5. The gallery page of my website (tannis.ca) has become a repository for podcasts (new!), webcasts (live show back in Nov/08), and other doodads like pictures and video of my fateful trip to Newfoundland for the Canadian Folk Music awards and a serendipitous voyage on the sea. I hope to post some footage of this weekend's choir concert there too.

Thanks for listening and all the best for 2009!...Tannis.

RESEARCH STUDY ON WOMEN WITH EPILEPSY

January 25, 2009

Research Study on Women With Epilepsy

Hello.

I am a 2nd year medical student at the University of Toronto . I am doing a research project on adult women with epilepsy in collaboration with Epilepsy Ontario and the Executive Direction Ms. Dianna Findlay. The study also has ethics approval from the University of Toronto Research Ethics Board . I have been receiving responses from all over Ontario , but none so far from the Ottawa region, which is quite upsetting to me (as I am originally from Manotick). I was wondering if you were interested in participating in our study. I have been recruiting participants through an advertisement, it can be viewed on Epilepsy Ontario 's main page (www.seizures.ca). I will be sharing the data with all epilepsy organizations that are interested, and all the data on participants will be kept completely confidential and private. Dr. Taufik Valiante a neurosurgeon at Toronto Western Hospital is also co-supervising the project and he has donated an iPod to the study which will be used in a draw for all participants.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Sincerely,

Message from Diane Wells (a.k.a. D.D. Rocker, etc...):

Harold Duckett was a very dear friend of mine for several years during my residence in Hamilton, Ontario. He was the funniest, kindest, gentlest, most considerate man I have ever known.

In addition to his talents as an illustrator, he was also a songwriter ("Celebrity Blues", "War Cries", etc.) and lead singer. He loved all kinds of music and liked to spend time watching sports on TV, especially football, with his buddy or two or three (Mark, Jade, Ruth-Ann, Brefany), or jamming with Czintar, Jean-Marc, Ziggy, etc. He was always there to help out his less fortunate friends, even when he could not afford to share what little he had for himself.

Harold will always hold a special place in my heart. May he rock the blues in heaven.

Diane
