SHOW ONE presents
LARRY KING:

STANDING UP
Exclusive Engagements in Ottawa and Toronto, November 2011
Tickets on sale in Ottawa NOW!

For 50 years in broadcasting, Larry King has been the one asking the questions. Now, the world's most famous interviewer becomes the subject with his brand new stage show, LARRY KING: STANDING UP.

The Emmy®, Peabody and CableAce Award-winning broadcast icon will give fans a hilarious and insightful look into his legendary life with two exclusive performances: one in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre; and the other in Toronto at Roy Thomson Hall, November 28 and 29, 2011, respectively.

Larry King's name has been woven into the fabric of North American culture by being invited into the living rooms of millions of people every night for 25 years on CNN. He has been kissed by Marlon Brando; he has tussled with Jerry Seinfeld; he was the first to sit down with ex-con Paris Hilton; and he has interviewed people that never give interviews, like the press-shy Frank Sinatra and circus master Guy Laliberté.

Starting with his life growing up as a street-smart kid in Brooklyn to being named the "most remarkable talk-show host on TV ever" (TV Guide), LARRY KING: STANDING UP is full of humorous anecdotes and stories from his incomparable broadcasting career. For Larry King Live on CNN, Larry King conducted more then 50,000 interviews, including every living US president and first lady since the Nixon administration, as well as the world's most famous celebrities and newsmakers. Success meant sitting down across the table from Larry King!

LARRY KING: STANDING UP marks Larry King's first stage appearance since completing his triumphant 25-year run on the award-winning Larry King Live, the first worldwide phone-in television talk show. Turning the tables for LARRY KING: STANDING UP, audiences will have the extraordinary opportunity to ask their own questions of the broadcast veteran at each performance.

PETER AND THE WOLVES - NEWSLETTER (AUGUST 2011)

Peter and the Wolves August 2011

New Songs

I'm going in to Dave Poulin's Studio Nine with Tom McMahon [bass] and Pete Beaudoin [drums] later this month to record beds for some new songs and re-arrangements of some old ones. I'm anxious for you to hear these new tunes.

A Rare Live Show

We don't play many live gigs [see our "Peter and the Wolves Live Performance Manifesto" next month], but we've been playing at the Ottawa and District Labour Council's Labour Day Picnic for quite a few years now. It's outdoors at McNab Park [corner of Bronson and Gladstone] on Monday, September 5, and admission is free. Sneezy Waters plays at 1:00, and we're on at 2:30. With me are Tom and Pete, as well as Rene Fortier [Latin percussion], Mark Ferguson [keys], Brian Asselin [tenor sax] and Dave Arthur [trombone and vocals].

For The Guitar/Theory Geek

Most of you familiar with our CD, Love/Hate Thing, are aware of the influence of Steely Dan on our music. I've always liked the slick chord progressions/voicings that Becker and Fagan apply to their songs. There's one chord, in particular, that appears in almost everything they've written, which they've dubbed the "mu major" chord. The voicings for this chord can be challenging to a guitar player, so I've published a couple of articles hoping to shed some light on the subject. They are:

http://www.ezinearticles.com/?The-Steely-Dan-Mu-Major-Chord-%5BAnd-Beyond%5D-For-Guitarists,-Part-Two&id=6165165

See you next month! - Peter

ZOMBIFIED - BRAND-NEW CD RELEASE BY S.C.O.T.S. (SEPT. 27)

ZOMBIFIED HITS STORES SEPTEMBER 27! PRE-ORDER SOON! NEW TOUR DATES!

Zombified!! Zombified, Southern Culture On The Skids’ tribute to the horror and exploitation movies that populated Southern theaters and drive-ins during the 60s and 70s, is being released this fall on Kudzu Records. Originally released in Australia as an eight song EP in 1998, the Zombified Extended Release is now a full LP with the addition of five new tunes, and will receive its first U.S. release September 27. It will be available for pre-order soon at SCOTS.com. Check back soon, you creepy crawlers!

The new and improved Zombified has been re-mastered and re-packaged with cover art by Sean Starwars and design by Yee Haw industries. Rick Miller, guitarist and singer for the band said, “you know, the Zombified EP never had a proper U.S. release and the band is excited about it happening now as a full album.” The album will be available in all formats, CD, digital download and LP. The LP is a limited edition of 1000 on blood red vinyl complete with CD inside! Zombified will be for sale this September in record stores, web stores and at scots.com.

Download the title track from Zombified for FREE at scots.com!

"I was always attracted to low budget DIY films," said Miller. "Maybe it was the lurid posters and newspaper ads that sucked me in as a kid. Later, I got into the directors, like Mario Bava, Hershell Gordon Lewis and George Romero, to name just a few. They made some entertaining and pretty disturbing movies from way outside the mainstream. A big influence on my approach to making music!"

The band’s music is no stranger to horror/exploitation films. Previous SCOTS songs can be found in soundtracks like the Spanish psycho classic "Perdita Durango," directed by Alex de la Iglesia and starring future Academy Award winner Javier Bardem. In the teen screamer "I Know What You Did Last Summer" the band makes an on screen appearance playing "My Baby's Got The Strangest Ways." SCOTS also supplied the soundtrack to "Blood Feast II, Buffet of Blood," the sequel to HGL's original gore epic.

Check out the tour dates and c'mon and get good and greasy at a SCOTS show near you!

"Chris Grabenstein hasn't forgotten how it feels to be a sixth grade boy. It's evident in his ghost stories for middle school readers. Few middle school boys would turn down a book about ghosts, zombies, and a hidden treasure of Confederate gold. Throw in voodoo, cemeteries, and the new school year, and it's obvious that Grabenstein knows the way to a reader's heart. The Smoky Corridor...is another winner from the author who won Anthony and Agatha Awards for previous books in this series."
Lesa Holstine, Lesa's Book Critiques

"Grabenstein is (such) a riveting storyteller, most kids won't be able to put this book down."
School Library Journal

"The latest in the Haunted Places Mystery series (the first, The Crossroads, 2008, won both the Anthony and Agatha awards) has all the mordant wit, rollicking action, and grossness any middle-schooler could want."

Halloween.

Dressing up, eating candy, carving pumpkins, and going to parties.

Most kids' favorite night of the year.

Not Zack Jennings.

Zack knows that on Halloween, the veil separating the ghostly plane from the human world is very, very thin. Powerful spirits can cross over and do some serious mischief.

In this fourth volume of Chris Grabenstein's popular Haunted Mysteries series, Zack must once again do battle with malevolent spirits. With the assistance of three dotty aunts (and their crazy cats), he must also save his town from a 200-year-old threat.

Advance Praise

"Thirteen bad-seed specters from the same family escape from their crypt one Halloween. They range from an 18th-century highwayman to a murderous Capone-era gangster dubbed "Crazy Izzy" and were all confined in the same tomb years ago thanks to spells cast by Zack Jennings' three great-aunts. Eleven-year-old Zack's inherited ability to see ghosts may be a mixed blessing at best, but it comes in handy when the 13 spectral Icklebys break out, seize control of their nerdy but increasingly willing descendant Norman and embark on a vengeful crime spree. Fortunately, most of the Icklebys turn out to be easily sidetracked, and equally fortunately Zack has allies on both sides of the dirt (as the author puts it), from the aforementioned great-aunts (weird sisters indeed, flying in from their Florida retirement home with a full stock of witchly goods and exorcism chants) to a headless cat ghost. As in Zack's three previous Haunted Mystery outings (The Smoky Corridor, 2010, etc.), the pace never flags. Through flurries of ultra-short chapters, events spiral to a suspenseful climax."
