Andy Frank of Roots Music Canada has been a tireless supporter of the Canadian folk and roots scene. He has interviewed, hosted, reviewed, webcast, documented or simply raved about the work of hundreds of independent musicians, helping them realize their own potential as creative artists.

Now, the music community is about to return the favour. Andy recently got the shock of his life: a diagnosis of cancer of the colon. This will mean some serious downtime, with no income for Andy, as he clears his schedule to allow himself time for surgery, chemo treatment, and recuperation.

This all-star benefit concert will feature a stellar lineup of roots, folk and world music all-stars, including Layah Jane, Suzie Vinnick, Bill Garrett & Curly Boy Stubbs, Jay Aymar, Rob Szabo, Crabtree & Mills, Jon Brooks, Rosemary Phelan, Annabelle Chvostek, Shawna Caspi, Grit Laskin, Kirsten Jones, HOTCHA!, and Janine Stoll with accompaniment by Trevor Mills and Gregg Lawless & more TBA, hosted by David Newland of Roots Music Canada.

The show will be broadcast LIVE across the Roots Music Canada fan network online and will raise much-needed funds to help Andy and his dear wife Helen along on his journey to wellness.

Peter Karp: "I had met Canadian guitarist singer/songwriter Sue Foley at The Ottawa Blues Festival in 2006. I was there playing with my band and I caught her act. She caught my ear. Nice guitar work sure - but fine songs and interesting voice. A real character voice. I remembered that when I was cutting tracks for "Shadows and Cracks." I had written a duet called "That Smile" and was discussing with my manager at the time which female artists to approach to do the job. "Sue Foley?", he asked. "You sound so different from one another." "Exactly", I replied. I drove with my band up to Ottawa for a gig and a recording date. We met in a run down house/studio. She acted cool. Too cool I reckoned. I'm not sure if it was the filthy surroundings or the fact that the equipment didn't work or that when we tried to sing together we couldn't harmonize that finally broke the ice and turned the whole thing into a laugh. Later she came to our gig and sat in. We said goodbye and went our separate ways. Over the course of the next year and a half while I was arduously touring the US promoting "Shadows and Cracks" we stayed in touch via email. At first the letters were cordial and light fare. But as the rigors of touring, the isolation of the road and my out of control drinking and manic depression took hold, these letters became more revealing. I don't have many friends and I don't trust easily. Sue Foley became a disembodied confidante. Someone I could share everything with which became particularly important to me during my wife's illness. We wrote about everything. No holds barred. And why not? We never saw one another; never even talked on the phone. There were no strings attached - only a safety net. That's how it felt anyway.

Finally in late 2009 when I was ready to go back to work we decided that we would work together. We'd look to the letters for our next CD - and turn them into songs. The result was "He Said - She Said" released on Blind Pig in March 2010. This collaboration has turned into a partnership. As of this writing we are touring and working on a brand new record."

He Said - She Said is an inspired and winning collaboration of original songs by Canadian Juno award winner Sue Foley and critically acclaimed U.S. singer / songwriter and Blind Pig artist Peter Karp. The songs are adapted from letters and e-mails between the two over a 2-year period.

Peter says, "What started as a casual exchange became a revealing account of the personal struggles and dramatic changes that were happening in our lives. Our shared thoughts became intimate. Then, weturned those letters into songs and made a great CD together."

The show encompasses folk, jazz, flamenco & blues resulting in an event that is moving, literate, romantic, rocking & exciting. It also has lots of humor and is very engaging moving between nylon acoustic guitar, dobro, piano and electric guitars. These two songwriters bring a wealth of performance history to this collaboration. Their new CD was released in March 2010 on Blind Pig Records and hit #1 on the Blues Chart for 6 weeks and Top 10 on Billboard!

Coast to Coast Artists Honoured with Maple Blues Awards

Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk, Toronto’s Suzie Vinnick and New Brunswick’s Matt Andersen Win Multiple Awards

(January 17, 2012) – Canadian Blues Artist from Coast-to-Coast were honoured by their peers at the 15^th Annual Maple Blues Awards gala in Toronto last night as a crowd of blues lovers gathered to celebrate Canadian blues at Koerner Hall.

Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk took three awards, including, Electric Act of the Year, Recording of the Year and Drummer of the Year (Matt Sobb). New Brunswick’s Matt Andersen left with awards for Entertainer of the Year, Acoustic Act of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. Now based in Toronto, Saskatoon native Suzie Vinnick won awards for Songwriter of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. MonkeyJunk, Andersen and Vinnick have each had a very successful year with national and international touring and extensive radio airplay, giving exposure to their own talents and further promoting Canadian blues artists as leaders in the industry.

Long-time Toronto talent buyer Randy Charlton and blues scholar Rob Bowman presented the Blues With a Feeling (Lifetime Achievement Award) to veteran entertainer and guitarist Paul James. James has been performing for over four decades and is considered to be a Canadian music icon. Toronto Blues Society President Derek Andrews and Montreal Blues Society President Brian Slack presented the Blues Booster of the Year award, a very special Maple Blues Award honouring outstanding contribution to the Canadian blues music industry, to Liz Sykes, President of the Ottawa Blues Society.

Other highlights include British Columbia’s Sabrina Weeks & Swing Cat Bounce taking the New Artist of the Year Award, presented by performers and Maple Blues Award nominees Bill Johnson and Rita Chiarelli. Other notable presenters of Maple Blues Awards were Stony Plain Records Holger Petersen, Andrew Galloway of Electro-Fi Records, Borealis Records Grit Laskin, SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste, and CRTC Vice-Chairman Tom Pentefountas.

Hosted by internationally recognized blues artists Shakura S’aida and Treasa Levasseur (both of whom gave stunning performances at the gala) the Maple Blues Awards included outstanding performances from Maple Blues Award nominees past and present, including Nova Scotia’s Joe Murphy, last year’s Blues With A Feeling Award winner Rita Chiarelli, Toronto’s Fathead, long time blues fixture Bill Johnson from Victoria, B.C., Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk, as well as the awards gala house band, The Maple Blues Band.

Diana's pure, powerful vocals are complimented beautifully by Chris's excellent vocals, guitar, harmonica and trumpet. They are joined for these shows by two members of the legendary DOWNCHILD Blues Band - GARY KENDALL on bass and MIKE FITZPATRICK on drums. MATINEE FUNDRAISING CONCERT FOR HUNT CLUB FIRE VICTIMS - JAN. 14

Carmen Mayer and her 8-year-old daughter, Madi, lost their home and dog on January 3rd to a fire in the Hunt Club area of Ottawa, ON.

A fundraiser has been organized to take place at the Royal Oak on Hunt Club this Saturday, January 14th, beginning at 2 p.m.

Advance tickets will be sold for $10.00, if you wish to make a contribution that way.

There will not be cover charged at the door, but a donation table will be set up if you wish to contribute. You can pay via cash donation or, if you prefer, with a gift card to Shoppers, a department store, a grocery store, etc.

Donated items of clothing, household essentials, food, toys, etc. are also appreciated. They have lost everything.

The Royal Oak will be accepting drop-offs of gift certificates and cash donations from now until the fundraiser on January 14th.

If you would like to help out, but are unable to attend, you can make a donation to any of the organizers of this event and they will ensure it gets to Carmen. There will be a 50/50 draw and a silent auction.

The live entertainment will take place from 4-9:30 p.m. and is comprised of The Elementals, Lora Bidner (tentative), Fraulein Eberg, and Full Nelson.

D.D.’S BLUE NOTES – JANUARY 7/12 (PREVIEW)

Here’s a reminder that Ottawa band A Darker Day (comprised of Jordan Taylor, Gumby, Mark Garrod, Jadon Baily and Jeff Jobling) are performing at "Rock for the Cause", in support of Sick Kids Foundation. It’s happening on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Greenfield’s Pub in Barrhaven (900 Greenbank Road) and will feature special guest Jeff Waters (an Ottawa native) of Canadian heavy-metal band Annihilator. Jeff has donated a signed Annihilator V Epiphone guitar, to be auctioned off towards the cause. The event starts at 8 p.m.

Greenfields will also host another Ottawa band, Perfect Stranger (with vocalist Lee Keeley, guitarist Richard Vernon (who occasionally sits in as a blues-player at Irene’s), keyboardist Johnny Maz, bassist JF Remillard, and drummer Gordon Troup. The band will be performing a musical tribute to Deep Purple on Saturday, January 21. Whether Deep Purple composers will demand royalties for the use of their music is not known, but imitation is the highest form of flattery.

To hear the remainder of D.D.'s Blue Notes, tune in just before 6 AM to the "Iron Maidens" segment of "Rockin' the Blues from Canada" on CKCU 93.1 FM, broadcasting in the wee hours of Saturday morning (also known as Friday overnight), January 7, from 2-7 AM. TORONTO BLUES SOCIETY ANNOUNCES MAPLE BLUES AWARD NOMINEES

For Immediate Release

The 15th Annual Maple Blues Awards Nominees

(October 27, 2011) Toronto, ON - The Toronto Blues Society will be celebrating its 15^th annual Maple Blues Awards by honouring nationally and internationally recognized Canadian Blues artists from across the country on January 16, 2012. The nominees are recognized both for their talent as well as their contribution to the growing Canadian blues music scene.

Leading the nominations is last year’s big winner, Ottawa's MonkeyJunk, with seven nominations, followed by Toronto’s Suzie Vinnick, who originally hails from Saskatoon, and Fathead each with four. Harry Manx & Kevin Breit also have four nominations. Hamilton’s Rita Chiarelli, who won the Blues With a Feeling Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, has three nominations, as does Harrison Kennedy, another Hamilton native. British Columbia blues artists are well represented with three nominations each for Jim Byrnes and Bill Johnson. New Brunswick’s Matt Andersen also has three nominations. Nominees for the Blues Booster of the Year Award will be announced at a later date.

Hosted by internationally recognized blues performers Treasa Levasseur and Shakura S’Aida, The 2012 Maple Blues Awards are taking place at Koerner Hall in Toronto on January 16th, 2012.

Voting opens Friday, October 28 at midnight ADT & closes Saturday, December 10 at midnight PST. Blues fans can cast their votes online at www.mapleblues.ca .

The Toronto Blues Society is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Blues. The Maple Blues Awards is Canada's national blues awards program. Its goal is to promote blues music across Canada, and to recognize outstanding achievement in the field.

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School has High Hopes for Ottawa

Winnipeg, Manitoba (October 20, 2011) Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division is heading to Ottawa on October 21 to search for the next stars of the ballet world; and it’s a location that in the past has not disappointed. No one knows better than Ontario’s Sarah Davey what it takes to make it as a professional dancer at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Before the audition that changed her life, Sarah began dancing at the age of three and graduated from the RWB School Professional Division in 2007. She trained in the School’s Aspirant Program until 2009, when she joined the RWB as an apprentice. Sarah was promoted to the corps de ballet in the 2001/12 season. Sarah has performed in various ballets including Moulin Rouge – The Ballet®, Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Wonderland, Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story, Dracula and The Ecstasy of Rita Joe. Sarah Davey will be in Ottawa from January 26-28 in the RWB’s stunning new ballet Svengali.

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division is a globally renowned school providing the highest calibre of classical training to both dancers and dance educators. In the next several months, the RWB School faculty will visit 16 cities across North America on its 2011/12 International Audition Tour. It is expected that hundreds of hopeful ballet dancers and teachers will audition to obtain a coveted spot in the RWB School Professional Division Summer Session.

Each year the Audition Tour allows the RWBS faculty an opportunity to discover the best young dancers on the continent. During the tour hundreds of promising dancers will audition for a place in the RWB School Professional Division Summer Session - the second-phase in the audition process for full-time acceptance. The successful young people who are accepted will have the opportunity to be nurtured as artists while working towards careers as dancers or dance teachers.

“The young talent we discover on the tour will have the opportunity to train with other exceptional young people who share their goal of pursuing professional dance careers,” says RWB School Director Arlene Minkhorst. “Working alongside others who share the same commitment and focus can be invaluable to a developing artist and lead to even greater success. This is evidenced by the many graduates of the Professional Division who have gone on, not only to work with the distinguished Royal Winnipeg Ballet, but with many other respected dance companies the world over.”

On October 21, 2011 at 9:00am the RWB School’s 2011/12 International Audition Tour will kick off in Ottawa, Ontario. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet has been fortunate to have attracted many talented dancers from Ontario over the years.

Anyone interested in attending auditions is encouraged to visit the RWB School website at www.rwb.org/school/pd/audition or call the School office at 1-204-957-3467. All candidates are asked to pre-register for audition classes. Individuals who are unable to attend in person may submit an audition DVD to Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School at 380 Graham Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 4K2.

During the course of the audition tour, master classes will also be offered giving dancers an additional opportunity to work with the renowned RWBS faculty.

Since 1971, the RWB School Professional Division has graduated more than 400 dance artists and educators. Countless graduates have gone on to become renowned dancers, among them RWB Principal Dancer Vanessa Lawson and former RWB prima ballerina Evelyn Hart. Many have also become internationally recognized choreographers, including Peter Quanz, Mark Godden and Jorden Morris. Many more are leaders within the international dance community as artistic directors, ballet masters, and dance teachers. And more still have gone on to successful careers with renowned companies around the world, including the Stuttgart Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Nederlans Dans Theater, Alberta Ballet, LaLaLa Human Steps and others.

Ottawa concert at Centrepointe Theatre set for Friday, October 28, as the singer/guitarist heads east midway through his 40-date tour…

Matt Andersen, the acclaimed singer-songwriter and guitarist from New Brunswick, has had the busiest year of his career. It’s included a six-day blues cruise around the Caribbean, two shows at Britain’s massive Glastonbury Festival, and 14 major Canadian folk, jazz or blues festivals. He played nearly 100 other shows from the Maritimes to Vancouver Island, and two tours supporting the CBC’s Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Café concerts. He also toured American cities with the Old Crow Medicine Show.

And now, in support of a brand new CD that was released September 20, he’s in the midst of a tour that’ll take him to nine provinces. So far, 40 concerts have been confirmed and almost all the shows in Western Canada were sold out in advance.

An Ottawa-area show for Matt Andersen, with Old Man Luedecke as special guest, has been set for Friday, October 28, at the Centrepointe Theatre (off Baseline Road, between Woodroofe and Greenbank Road).

New CD expected to be major seller

Andersen’s career is expected to move upward with the release of his latest CD. Coal Mining Blues was recorded at drummer Levon Helm’s Woodstock NY studios. Produced by Nashville-based Canadian guitarist Colin Linden, the record includes performances by Garth Hudson, the former keyboard player with The Band and singer Amy Helm. The CD is on Ontario-based Busted Flat Records, distributed by F.A.B.

Hailing from New Brunswick, Andersen is known for his larger-than-life showmanship that has earned him a fervent and steadfast fan base. His sprawling blues, roots and rock music hybrid has gained him multiple East Coast Music Awards and an international reputation.

The moment this tour ends on November 24 in Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Andersen sets off on a month-long tour in Australia — his first trip down under.

It's been a little less than two years since Jadea Kelly gave up her day job to be a full-time musician. She's also toured in Europe, played for audiences in the Maritimes three times and western Canada twice, was nominated as best new emerging artist at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and held down a three-month residency at Toronto's Cameron House, a legendary launching pad for up-and-coming artists.

With the success of the Toronto residency under her belt, Jadea is already a week into a month-long residency at the Elmdale House Tavern in Ottawa.

She’s accompanied by an all-star line up of Ottawa musicians, including David Baxter, Peter Von Althen, Ken Kanwisher, Cindy Doire, Lynne Hanson, and Lynn Miles. Baxter is Jadea’s special guest this Tuesday (October 11), with Cindy Doire set for October 18, and Lynne Hanson on the 25th.

– NOW ACCEPTING PUBLIC NOMINATIONS THROUGH TO OCTOBER 31, 2011

OTTAWA – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2011 – The Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMAs) announced details today for a brand new award category, UNSUNG HERO. Submissions are open to the public from now to the end of October. The award will be presented during the SEVENTH ANNUAL CFMAs at the Isabel Bader Theatre, Victoria College, University of Toronto on Sunday, December 4th. The annual Unsung Hero award will recognize the exceptional contribution of an individual, group, or organization to any aspect of the Canadian folk, roots and world music scene, such as performance, promotion and presentation. Nominations from the public will be accepted for this category from now until October 31st. The recipient will be selected by a five-member jury, from the region where the awards will take place – in this case, for 2011, Central Canada (which includes Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut).

The mission of the Canadian Folk Music Awards is to celebrate and promote Canadian Folk Music in all its forms. Until their creation in 2005, there existed no awards to celebrate the breadth and depth of folk music in Canada. Awards such as the Junos, East Coast Music Awards or the Western Canadian Music Awards include a few categories that apply to folk and roots music, but without as broad a view of the genre. The judging process is similar to that of the two-stage elimination model used by the Junos via a randomly selected jury drawn from the folk music community.

Grammy Award-winning harmonica virtuoso Sugar Blue is not your typical bluesman... Born James Whiting - he was raised in Harlem, New York, where his mother was a singer and dancer at the fabled Apollo Theatre. He spent his childhood among the musicians and show people who knew his mother, including the great Billie Holiday, and decided that he wanted to be a performer.

Blue received his first harmonica from his aunt, and proceeded to hone his chops by wailing along with Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder songs on the radio. He was soon to be influenced by the jazz greats such as Dexter Gordon and Lester Young. Sugar Blue has used this background to his advantage, though, creating an ultra-modern blues style and sound that is instantly recognizable as his own.

Blue began his career as a street musician and made his first recordings in 1975 with legendary blues figures Brownie McGhee and Roosevelt Sykes. The following year, he contributed to recordings by Victoria Spivey and Johnny Shines before pulling up stakes and moving to Paris on the advice of pioneer blues pianist Memphis Slim.

While in France, Blue hooked up with members of the Rolling Stones, who instantly fell in love with his sound. The Stones invited Blue to join them in the studio. Besides his work on their Some Girls album, he can be heard on Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. He appeared live with the group on numerous occasions and was offered the session spot indefinitely, but he turned it down, opting instead to return to the States and put his own band together rather than became a full-time sideman. Before returning to the U.S. in 1982, Blue cut a pair of albums, Crossroads and From Paris to Chicago.

Blue's decision to return home, despite his growing renown as a session player, was spurred by his desire to work with and learn from the masters of blues harmonica. Thus he came to Chicago and proceeded to sit in with the likes of Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton and Junior Wells. Blue went on to spend two years touring with his friend and mentor, Willie Dixon, as part of the Chicago Blues All Stars before putting his own band together in 1983.

With his own band, Blue's star continued to rise. He received the 1985 Grammy Award for his work on the Atlantic album, Blues Explosion, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

He recorded on Dixon's Grammy-winning Hidden Charms album in 1989, has performed on festival stages with classic artists like Muddy Waters, B.B. King , Art Blakey and Lionel Hampton and has also set his sights on television and the big screen. He sat in with Fats Domino, Ray Charles, and Jerry Lee Lewis for the Cinemax special, "Fats Domino and Friends", and has appeared on screen and in the musical score of Alan Parker's acclaimed 1987 thriller, "Angel Heart", starring Robert De Niro. He is perhaps best known for his signature riff and solo on the Rolling Stones' hit, "Miss You", from their Some Girls album. Blue performs his own version of the song on his 1993 Alligator debut, BLUE BLAZES. With his second release, IN YOUR EYES, Sugar Blue emerges as a singular, profound songwriter as well as a harmonica wizard.

 In 2008 following the release of CODE BLUE, Sugar Blue received two nominations as Best instrumentalist - Harmonica at the Blues Awards and as Outstanding Performer at the Junior Wells Harp Award in Memphis.

Blue came back in 2010 with his newest recording effort, THRESHOLD, of which Blue says,

"I believe that the greatest threshold of all is love because it is the fount from which all human life springs. Life echoes the sounds of our interactions: joy, sadness, heartache, passion, loneliness, intimacy, celebration or solemn occasion. We have tried to give voice to these feelings in this musical offering."

Sugar Blue incorporates what he has learned into his visionary and singular style, technically dazzling yet wholly soulful. He bends, shakes, spills flurries of notes with simultaneous precision and abandon, combining dazzling technique with smoldering expressiveness and gives off enough energy to light up several city square blocks... And sings too! His distinctive throat tends to be overlooked in the face of his instrumental virtuosity - he's got a rich, sensual voice with a whisper of huskiness which by itself would be something out of the ordinary.  But oh, there's that harmonica again... !!

autoKratz are back with a banging new Future-Techno EP and live show - dancefloor bombs that embody why they started making music.

The bastard offspring of their collaboration with Primal Scream and New Order was somewhat of a child prodigy. Self Help For Beginners scored international success and many ‘album of the month’ accolades.

But since then, their schizophrenic tendencies kicked back in, and the unquenchable thirst for making banging electronics returned. This has given birth to Heart Attack Man and Sucker Sirens; two tracks that embody the reason why they started making music.

They spent the summer immersed in vintage CJ Bolland, the shreds of tape that Attaque had left on the Bad Life studio floor and enough pills to fuel the Berghain for a full week.

It inspired autoKratz to propel themselves back to the vanguard of future techno. The new live show debuted last Friday night at Tunnel club in Milan, and it went off in a big way.

STEVE RAIKEN @ GARY 17'S OPEN STAGE AT TERRI O'S (TORONTO) - OCT. 5

A sensitive and exquisitely accomplished fingerstyle guitarist, Steve Raiken is also a songwriter whose lyrical talents match or even exceed his six-string prowess. His latest CD, Stages, was released last winter and, as fate would have it, presaged him going through some difficult life stages afterwards, as he nursed his father through the final few months of his life.

Rather than brooding on his loss, however, Steve has found solace in his music and has been busy performing at a variety of shows across the GTA over the past couple of months, often coming out to visit my Wednesday open stage at Terri O’s, 185 Danforth Avenue, a block east of Broadview, in Toronto. On Wednesday, Oct. 5, he’ll be doing a half-hour feature set for Week 29 of the event.

He’ll take to the stage around 10:30 for his half-hour set, with the open stage action starting around 9 and continuing afterwards till 1:30 or so. As always I’ll have the Tak acoustic and Typhoon electric for performers to borrow if desired. There are two mics and three instrument input cords and in between the live action sets I’ll spin tunes from local and Canadian singer-songwriters and bands.

The club’s two patios will be open and Lea McFarland will be holding court behind the bar, as always. The club’s food is delicious and affordable and the beer prices are very welcoming. Performers can sign up to play whenever they arrive – feel free to play a few tunes at the Jon Long jam across the street at Black Swan and then come over to get on our list or vice versa!

THE YOHAWKS AT VIREE BLUES BOREALE - OCT. 12

A “Larger than Usual” Group at the 14th edition of Virée Blues Boréale

It’s now a tradition: October being the birthday month of one of Virée Blues Boréale’s team members, our gracious hostess, Katrina, has been offered a carte blanche to select the guest artists of our next production. She couldn’t resist choosing a very recent discovery. Indeed, we were appointed judges to the “On The Road to Memphis” competition, sponsored by the Ottawa Blues Society, and were dazzled at the first notes played by that group. The musical arrangements by those perfectly synchronized 9 musicians were a demonstration of the richness of the style they acquired through their many years of career. No need to tell you who won the competition that night ! So, to mark our marvelous Katrina’s birthday, it is our pleasure to present the largest group to perform on Virée Blues Boréale’s stage: The Yohawks.

An R&B/Soul ensemble based in Ottawa, this group is masterfully directed by not one but three “highly experienced” musicians who act as lead singers, combining their voices in an inimitable mix. They are Dave Poulin, who also plays bass, Keith Richardson, also on guitar and Brad Campbell, on guitar as well. They are some kind of extension of the famous D Five group which was so popular throughout the 60s. After performing together for over forty years, as is often the case after many successful years, they dampened their common project to turn to different musical projects and concentrate on their families. Since a few years now, they’re back together, for everybody’s pleasure and, as usual, with Brian Bradfield on drums. They also brought a solid team of renowned musicians with them: Ray Lemaire on keyboards, and an incredible brass section featuring Mark Ferguson on trombone, Dyson Nick on trumpet, Mike Tremblay on tenor sax and Brian Asselin on baritone sax.

With their first album, MPH, launched in 2009, The Yohawks offer a completely original repertoire of R&B of the 60s style with shades of rock and Motown, presented in a very tight ensemble and intensified by a solid and well-balanced brass section.

An experience worthy of yesteryears' large ensemble shows, at Virée Blues Boréale, with The Yohawks, Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at 8h00 p.m., at Le Troquet Bistro Bar, 41 Laval street, in the Old Hull sector of Gatineau, QC.

Canada’s internationally successful, self-made Celtic powerhouse Loreena McKennitt joins the festivities this year along with multi-talented musician/actor Jim Byrnes. Jim will be accompanied by last year’s Producer of the Year winner and fingerstyle guitar genius Steve Dawson. Another 2010 CFMA recipient, Rose Cousins, from Nova Scotia, is sure to delight audiences with her lush, deep music and distinctive humorous banter. Stirring it up will be Afro-jazz-Christian a capella group Soul Influence, which focuses on the fusion of distinct African spiritual sounds based on Zulu, Shona, Ndebele, Bemba, Lingala,Tswana, Tonga, Twi, Taita Nyanja and Swahili, along with contemporary Christian gospel music. Quebec trio De Temps Antan will provide an explosive onstage presence, with their combined virtuosity on violin, accordion, harmonica, guitar, bouzouki and many other instruments.

The CFMAs, along with TD Bank and The Twelfth Fret, are thrilled to present the world premiere of TV personality Jonathan Torrens’ film, "A WALK IN MY DREAM."

The film features musician Mike Stevens, who is probably the only harmonica player in the World to appear on the Grand Ol’ Opry stage more than 300 times; give himself eight hernias because of the way he plays; and be named Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky for his outstanding contribution to bluegrass music.

Ten years ago, at the top of his game, Mike’s career took a sudden and drastic detour when he found himself face to face with a group of Labrador youth living in unimaginable conditions. His life would never be the same...and neither would theirs.

The film will debut at the TIFF Bell Lightbox and will launch the 2011 CFMA events on Friday, December 2, at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20, available at the TIFF box office, and a full 50% of the ticket price will be a donation to ArtsCan Circle, the registered charity organization that is inspired by Stevens’ work and dedicated to linking creative artists with Indigenous youth at risk in Canada.

Nominee showcase performances and special events will run from Friday, December 2 - Sunday, December 4, as part of the CFMAs extravaganza. Details will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

The mission of the Canadian Folk Music Awards is to celebrate and promote Canadian Folk Music in all its forms. Until their creation in 2005, there existed no awards to celebrate the breadth and depth of folk music in Canada. Awards such as the Junos, East Coast Music Awards or the Western Canada Music Awards include a few categories that apply to folk and roots music, but without as broad a view of the genre. The judging process is similar to that of the two-stage elimination model used by the Junos via a randomly selected jury drawn from the folk music community.

MEMPHIS takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun falls in love with everything he shouldn't - rock and roll and an electrifying black singer.

MEMPHIS is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever.

MEMPHIS is an incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves -- filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock 'n' roll.

The show features a brand new Tony winning score with music by Bon Jovi's founding member and keyboardist, David Bryan, with lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change), who also pens the musical's book. Bryan and DiPietro also collaborated on the award-winning off-Broadway hit, The Toxic Avenger.

MEMPHIS is based on a concept by the late George W. George (producer of the Tony nominated Bedroom Farce and the film, My Dinner With Andre), with direction by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) and choreography by Sergio Trujillo, who is currently represented by three shows on Broadway (Memphis, Jersey Boys and The Addams Family).
