Paul Rishell was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1950, which made his young teenage years coincide with the early '60s, so naturally he started out as a drummer in a surf-rock band. Fortunately for all of us, a friend soon turned him on to the country blues records of Son House, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson and others, and Paul was hooked for life. Blues struck such a chord in him that he immersed himself in the old records until he learned to capture their feel on guitar and vocals, all the while gaining an encyclopedic knowledge of the great players and their recordings. By the early '70s Paul had moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and established himself among contemporaries like Bonnie Raitt and Chris Smither as a solo performer, bandleader, and one of the top players on the fertile Boston music scene. It was an exciting time, as many of the great bluesmen made their first trips north of Chicago, and Paul had the chance to play with many of his heroes, including Son House, Johnny Shines, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and Howlin' Wolf. At about this time, Annie Raines was just across town, working her way through Kindergarten. The blues muse struck her during her high school years, which were the mid-'80s. While her friends were listening to Pink Floyd, Annie was enthralled by the sounds of the Muddy Waters Band, and particularly drawn to the blues harmonica playing of Little Walter Jacobs, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson. As with Paul Rishell some twenty years earlier, the blues hit Annie so hard she just had to follow, and she dropped out of college halfway through her freshman year to become one of the first serious female blues harmonica players in the country. Annie began to play gigs at local Boston area clubs, and later traveled to Chicago where she met and played with Pinetop Perkins, Louis Myers, and James Cotton.
Paul Rishell’s debut recording, Blues on a Holiday, was released in 1990 as the first CD from the fledgling Tone-Cool Records label, to resounding critical acclaim. The album was half acoustic, half electric, and established Paul as a masterful, versatile blues player and as well as a deeply soulful singer-songwriter. Meanwhile Annie continued to hone her considerable talents working the club circuit with various bands, including the Tarbox Ramblers and the very first Susan Tedeschi Band. Not coincidentally, Paul was giving guitar lessons to both Michael Tarbox and Susan Tedeschi at the time. It was inevitable that these two kindred spirits would eventually get together, and when they did, during the recording of Paul's second Tone-Cool CD, Swear to Tell the Truth, in 1993, the sparks flew. Paul and Annie both base their ensemble playing style on close communication, listening keenly to the other players to support rather than overshadow them, and their duo work here is marked by the sensitive interplay that has become so central to their performances. Paul and Annie stayed together as a working team, collaborating on original songs and releasing I Want You to Know (1996) and Moving to the Country (2000), the W.C. Handy Award-winner for "Acoustic Blues Album of the Year". The buzz-singing guitarist Paul Rishell and his harmonica-blowing partner Annie Raines have fashioned a mighty fine career for themselves through their refreshing rearrangements of vintage blues, mostly of the rural sort. Goin’Home, the Boston duo's latest release, is typically rife with variety and virtuosity.

The Crossroads Band has garnered two BB award nominations for 2007 from The Washington Blues Society. The band's latest CD, I Want It Right Now, is in the running for top recording and harmonica-player Steve Bailey has been nominated for the " Life-Time Achievement" award.
The Crossroads Band has recently had a light gig schedule. That is about to change. Every Thursday in April, the band will be playing The Chalet Tavern, 5515 Pioneer Way E., Puyallup, WA 253-845-3860 from 7-10 pm. This looks to be a fun place. Hope you can drop on by and say Hi!

I know, I know - I had promised some news a while ago. But things were still pretty fluid. Right off, thank you and a big welcome to all of you new subscribers. And thanks to all of you who signed up from the get-go and have stayed with me. I appreciate all of your kind words and support. Now, to the news.
First, my website has been updated and we have posted the cover for my upcoming book, A PERFECT GRAVE, on my home page (and at left). Please have a look and let me know what you think -- it's a bit darker than EVERY FEAR.
We've also updated my appearances. For the first time, my release date has been split between the U.S. and Canada. A Perfect Grave (APG) will be released May 29 in Canada and September 4 in the U.S. Pre-orders have started already online. For those of you outside of Canada, and thanks to my readers who order online and read my in English versions in Turkey, South Korea, South Africa, Iceland, Japan, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, France and Great Britain, if you can't wait, you might want to consider pre-ordering online from a Canadian site (if it's possible) or ask your favourite local store to order for you. And a special thanks to readers in Norway and Sweden, where I am published in Norwegian and Swedish.
I invite everyone to check out my foreign edition covers. We just got the new one for THE DYING HOUR, which comes out in April in Norway. I think it is evocative of the movie poster for The Exorcist, one of my favourite books and movies.
Now you get the big scoop (and for those of you in news I have buried my lead). If you've been enjoying the Jason Wade series, there's further reason to consider ensuring you get APG and the two previous books in the series, THE DYING HOUR and EVERY FEAR. After A PERFECT GRAVE's publication, Jason and his old man will be taking a break.
In 2008, I'll release a stand-alone thriller. It has the working title, HOUR OF DEATH. More on that later.
Will Jason return? Well, I don't want to leave you in suspense, but that's something I'll address in future newsletters. The other news concerns my participation in a new TV show, called "True Pulp Murder", a documentary TV series. Last weekend I was in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside shooting my segments. The show blends elements of fact and fiction. According to the producers, each episode focuses on a true crime, with re-enactments and interviews with the original police investigators, coupled with a crime writer commenting on parallels between the true crime and his or her own writing. Now, it is slated to first appear on Canadian networks later this year, possibly on Global. As for the U.S., UK and others, that is all still in development. That is all I know for now. When I know more, I'll pass it on to you.
Before I sign off, I'll mention that there may be a chance for you to get a sneak peek of the first chapter of A PERFECT GRAVE early in June. Stay tuned for more on that. Now, please feel free to share this newsletter with your chat groups and bookclubs. I love it when you spread the word and introduce new readers to my work or ask your local libraries and book stores to order. I also love it when you drop by the website to let me know how you enjoyed my stories. It may take a while, but I always try to answer every letter I get.

Film Review - "Children of Men"
The year is 2027, and the world is in a horrible mess. Terrorism exists everywhere, the world's economy has seemingly collapsed, and refugees are streaming unwanted into countries like Great Britain, where the government is using brutal military force to try and stem the tide. To make matters worse, not a single baby has been born for 18 years, and the human race teeters on the brink of eventual extinction.
Clive Owen stars as journalist Theo Faron, thrust into a plot to escort a young pregnant black woman named Kee to a safe haven in the Azores, where some sort of project is underway to try and save the human race. He's enlisted in this task by his activist ex-girlfriend, Julianna Moore. Michael Caine also stars as Theo's friend Jasper, an aging hippy who sells marijuana to the army and lives in one of the few places of sanctuary left in the British countryside.
This unrelentingly bleak and depressing thriller is nevertheless a film masterpiece, and it's probably because of its dark vision that it didn't garner a single Oscar nomination. It certainly deserved them, particularly for the spectacularly realistic battle sequences that put you right in the middle of modern urban warfare. Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, who also did the excellent adaptation of Harry Potter & The Prisoner Of Azkaban, really delivers the goods with a gripping story, gritty acting and a totally believable and amazingly staged production.
"Children of Men" is a brilliant film, but also a hellish vision of the near future, where guerrilla warfare rages on the streets and where refugees are rounded up in cages by the army and the police and shipped off to concentration camps reminiscent of Nazi Germany. Pockets of the old way of life still exist here and there, but one knows it's only a matter of time before they too are swept aside by the tide of absolute anarchy. It exists so much in the realms of reality that I hesitate to call it a science fiction film, but I guess it is, and as such it's one of the finest movies in that genre ever made.

As the title suggests, the disc will combine studio recordings with live recordings. The material will be drawn from the extensive - and apocryphal - catalogue of the group's history, most of which has never been properly recorded. Some of this material will be featured on-stage at the group's two Toronto shows (their first Toronto appearance since 1979!) @ Ciao Edie's on April 13th & 14th.

"Music for the Mountain" Concert - March 23-25
Hey, everybody.
Things are really looking up for this weekend's..IN DOOR....."Music for the Mountain" 3-day benefit concert, dance, art show and food event at the Mineral Events Center in Mineral, WA, near the foot of Mt. Rainier, from March 23rd, 24th and 25th...
This is a Grass Roots event.
We are now featuring two stages with over 25 bands, more than 100 musicians, a Mt. Rainier all-star mega jam session (that only a Mountain like Mt. Rainier could inspire), several artists, photographers, dozens of volunteers and even some clowns, who are all donating their time and talent for this worthy cause. This event will be recorded and filmed, as well.
We will have great raffle and auction items donated by the likes of The Seattle Seahawks, which includes an autographed pair of (NFL MVP) Shaun Alexander's Football Pants (That's right, ladies!!) and an autographed NFL Football signed by Walter Jones.
Ted Brown Music in Tacoma has donated a beautiful Black Jackson Blues Guitar (as seen on KOMO news 4 yesterday, March 20th). This guitar will be signed by every musician that performs at "Music for the Mountain" during all 3 days.
The guitar will be a raffle item that requires only a $1.00 raffle ticket to win. It will be presented to the winner on Sunday, March 25th, during the Mt. Rainier all-star mega jam.
Artist and actor Teddy Haggerty will be in attendance all 3 days working on a 3-day/3-part 6' x 18' interactive Mt. Rainier theme mural, with the audience contributing throughout the weekend. This mural, which will be auctioned off at the end of the weekend, will include paint made from original mud from Woodstock off of Teddy's sandals that he wore at Woodstock in 1969 (also a 3-day event), mixed in with ground-up stone from Salvador Dali's beach in Spain. (This is a true story; we couldn't make something like this up. This is the way Teddy Haggerty thinks and works.
Also, award-winning graphic artist and blues photographer Phil Chesnut has donated some original art work of Johnny Winter, recently signed by Johnny Winter himself. [Coincidentally, Johnny will be playing in Ottawa this Saturday, March 24, at the Bronson Centre - www.bronsoncentre.net for a mere $36 - D.D.]
Jef Jaisun, recent recipient of the national award from Blues Foundation (www.blues.org) for "Keeping the Blues alive", has donated a superb action photo of Blues great Shemekia Copeland.
Many local businesses have also donated gift certificates for goods and services. Some of them are listed on the web site, www.mountrainier.org.
Some of the great bands in attendance, like "Knee Deep" from Seattle, (www.kneedeepseattle.com), are even putting up their whole band for a raffle for a future 3-hour show.
So many creative ways and ideas for raffle and auction items have been presented by musicians, artists, music fans and local businesses that this is sure to be a one-of-a-kind fundraiser and benefit concert.

Becki Sue and her Big Rockin' Daddies
Hey, Blues Fans.
As most of you know, Becki Sue & her Big Rockin' Daddies! participated in the 2007 International Blues Challenge on February 1-3 (representing the Washington Blues Society) at The Hard Rock Cafe, located on the infamous Beale Street in Memphis, TN.
There were 155 bands and solo acts performing in 17 clubs. Unfortunately, we were not one of the ten bands to make it to the finals, but we feel we definitely made a great impression, judging from the positive feedback that we received at the event and even more great feedback that continues to roll in since the event took place.
Recently we received in the mail the scores from our judges. This is the first we have seen the results on paper, although we spoke with some of the judges after the event was over and have wondered, since we got very positive feedback from all of the judges that we spoke with, why we didn't make the finals. Now we have a pretty good idea about "Who", but still we wonder... "Why?"
There were three judges per night for the two nights that we performed and competed with nine other bands. We were all scored in four categories: Blues Content, Talent, Originality, and Stage Presence, on a scale from 1 to 10. Here are our scores and judges comments (when given) just as they wrote them while we were playing our two shows.

On March 21, 2007, at 8:00 p.m., the Catbird Jazz Society, in co-operation with the Marshlands Inn, is offering another of its jazz and dessert concerts, this time featuring Eliana Cuevas.
The explosion of jazz and world music in Canada in the last decade has given audiences access to a rich variety of great music from many countries and cultures.
Eliana Cuevas is the stellar singer from Latin America for whom we have been searching to round out that picture. The intimate, friendly and resonant environment of the Marshlands Inn Dining Room is the ideal venue for such a performer.
Eliana Cuevas studied music in Venezuela and history at the University of Toronto. Continuing her musical studies in Canada, she came to sing with a variety of pop, Latin-jazz, reggae, salsa, Brazilian & flamenco ensembles.
She released her first recording as leader of her own ensemble in 2002, and in 2004 issued a second album, entitled Ventura. Next month she is scheduled to begin to record the next CD. Ms Cueva’s work is characterized by uplifting melodies, haunting and personal lyrics, jazz harmonies and rhythms from Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, Peru, and jazz itself. She sings in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.
Ms Cuevas has performed all across Canada, at such venues as the Lula Lounge, the Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar, the Top O’ The Senator, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Victoria Jazz Festival, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Yukon Storytelling Festival, the Comox Valley Music Festival, the Atlantic Jazz Festival, the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, the Small World Music Festival, the Festival des Rythmes du Monde, several folk festivals and the “Global Divas” concert organized by Jane Bunnett.
She has also performed internationally, in Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin and her native Venezuela. Her collaborators are all outstanding musicians, as well, and we anticipate a fantastic evening of musical and gustatory pleasure!

On Friday, April 13th, 9 p.m. at George's Roadhouse, TBS presents the Handy/Blues Award-winning (Paul) Rishell and (Annie) Raines Blues Band from Boston.
Paul and Annie have won the best country blues album award at the Handy (now called the Blues) Awards for their acoustic effort, Going to the Country.
They will be in town with an excellent backing band in support of a new album, so look forward to a combination of great acoustic and electric blues.

"What he does on guitar is what a synthesizer would do. He puts a shimmer in guitar. Sometimes it's not even recognizable as a guitar", states Bob Doidge of Grant Avenue Studio.

Greetings everyone ~ (And Happy St. Patty's Day!)
It has been a long time since I wrote a 'what's new' or 'notes from the road' entry for all of you - perhaps mostly because I have not been on the road for a while. I have, however, been working on a new album, with long-time engineer producer partner Steve Drown (Dames Rocket, Shunyata) and arranger Glen DaCosta.
This album has been in the works for a long time. I came off the road touring 'Indiana' in late 2003 and became side-tracked (in a good way) by trips to Ecuador, and Jamaica - an emersion into perspectives outside the US and a musical partnership with an amazing reggae musician, Glen DaCosta of Bob Marley and The Wailers fame. I was also side-tracked last year as I spent the better part of it managing a struggling non-profit performance space (Opera House in Boothbay Harbor, Maine), which is now a bit more 'on it's feet'.
Travel outside the US and work with Jamaican musicians helped inspire a number of tunes on my upcoming album, entitled 'Invocation'. I now have 10 tracks close to completed. I am heading to work next week into early April to finish with Steve here at the Studio in Portland, Maine. More than likely, I will put this album out myself, but that is to be confirmed and determined in the months to come.
It is good to get back to music, to performing and recording and thinking about the future, which with the grace of God will include travel. I have missed the road terribly. I have missed visiting different parts of the US and have missed seeing you along the way. I've played a few shows here in Maine in the past months and thank the Maine fans for coming out and experiencing the new tunes for the first time. In December we had the luck of having Mr DaCosta in our midst and we played as a trio with guitarist Jeff Rojo, a very talented Mexican classical guitarist who has joined me on stage in the past year.
Last week I was honored to be a part of a very moving tribute to a courageous young woman from Maine, Hanley Denning. Ms. Denning started a wonderful non-profit organization called 'Safe Passage' (check out safepassage.org). Tragically she was killed this past January in a car accident in Guatemala. Nearly 2,000 people attended the sold-out event at Merrill Auditorium here in Portland (several hundred were turned away) on March 9th (Hanley's birthday). I was asked to perform several songs in between the speeches and films including ' Recycled Life' - an Oscar nominated short documentary which highlighted the area in which Hanley worked. Talented trumpeter, Marc Chillemi joined me on stage for the first time and the music felt inspired. Hanley Denning will be dearly missed - but her organization and work will live on for years to come.
Shows coming up are localized here in Maine for now - until the album is done and I can work it into other parts of the US and start planning tour dates. I will keep all of you posted about the arrival of 'Invocation' and let you know if there will be an opportunity to buy advanced copies (stay tuned!).

Hello, Minglewood Fans.
We want to thank those of you who were at any of the Birthday Bashes. The shows were awesome, great music, great karma and, best of all, great fans made the nights into one of those special times out.
Now the bad news. I am sending this email to everyone on Matt's email list, even to those of you out of the Maritimes. You never know where the hat may show up. Hate to say it but someone absconded with Matt Minglewood's trademark black hat after the show in Halifax at the Marquee Club. Nice Birthday Present! Matt changed into his baseball hat and put his trademark brimmed black Akubra hat on top of his coat in the dressing room. When he went to get his coat when he finished his gig, the hat was gone. He has had this hat a long time and it's become a signature hat for most of his career. It is not replaceable, so it really put a damper on the night. Anyway, would appreciate it if you hear of anyone with it or happen to see it on anyone to please let us know and pass the word around. You never know, it may show up. It would be pretty well useless to anyone else; they would never be able to wear it, as it is so easily identifiably Matt's. We would just like it returned ....no questions asked. They could simply drop it in the mail to the address below..

URIAH HEEP is delighted to announce that drummer RUSSELL GILBROOK has joined the band. He replaces LEE KERSLAKE, who left the band in January due to health reasons.
Russell is regarded as one of the UK’s finest drummers and clinicians and has demonstrated specialist drum clinics all over Europe. He has worked with such diverse artists as Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Van Morrison, John Farnham, Alan Price, Chris Barber and Lonnie Donnigan.
RUSSELL GILBROOK comments: "I am really excited to be joining a band with such a fantastic history and quality of musicianship and musicality. I am just as excited to be a part of the band’s progress into the future, and I cannot wait to get in the Recording Studio because the songs we have already worked on are fantastic. Comments URIAH HEEP and founder member MICK BOX: "Russell came to the audition and blew us all away. He is one of the heaviest drummers I have ever heard. We spent two days auditioning a shortlist of twelve drummers from 120 applicants, and once Russell started playing we just knew he was the man for the job. There were smiles all around and he made the drum stool his. We were never looking for a clone of Lee Kerslake, as that would have been an impossible task, as there is only one Lee. URIAH HEEP commence recording its first new studio album in nine years, since 1998’s "Sonic Origami", later this month at Chapel Studios (The Darkness, Arctic Monkey's) in Lincolnshire with producer MIKE PAXMAN (Status Quo, Judie Tzuke). The as yet untitled album - which will be Heep’s 21st official studio album, is scheduled for release in early September on Sanctuary Records.

John Sloman, former singer of Uriah Heep (album "Conquest", 1980) and Gary Moore Band, is the special guest at the Mostly Autumn gigs in Holland in May 2007. John just released his acoustic CD, "13 Storeys".
The new Ken Hensley CD, "Blood On The Highway", will be released on May 25th. On May 22nd there will be a live showcase performance of the entire CD, including the original singers, Glenn Hughes, Jorn Lande, Eve Gallagher and John Lawton, at the Fabrik in Hamburg, Germany. The entire performance will be filmed for later release as a DVD.

URIAH HEEP is delighted to announce that drummer RUSSELL GILBROOK has joined the band. He replaces LEE KERSLAKE, who left the band in January due to health reasons.
Russell is regarded as one of the UK’s finest drummers and clinicians and has demonstrated specialist drum clinics all over Europe. He has worked with such diverse artists as Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Van Morrison, John Farnham, Alan Price, Chris Barber and Lonnie Donnigan.
RUSSELL GILBROOK comments: "I am really excited to be joining a band with such a fantastic history and quality of musicianship and musicality. I am just as excited to be a part of the band’s progress into the future, and I cannot wait to get in the Recording Studio because the songs we have already worked on are fantastic. Music For the Mountain came into being after flood damage at Mt. Rainier National Park on November 6, 2006, caused closure of the National Park. "Bluesman of the Year" Randy Oxford and Phil Freeman, owner of Copper Creek Inn at Mt. Rainier, began organizing a weekend of music to benefit the National Park, the "Mount Rainier Gateway Initiative" to preserve the scenic corridor to the National Park Entrance, and the Ashford Community Park and Performing Arts Center project.
Music for the Mountain is a proceeds benefit to raise money for trail restoration and other activities at Mount Rainer National Park not covered by annual or emergency funding by Congress. Gate Entrance fees stay in the park and are used to build and restore trails. All gate fees have been lost since last November. Your attendance and contributions will help replace the lost entrance fees and get work started on damaged trails, now estimated to be three years behind schedule.
Music for the Mountain proceeds will also benefit the Nisqually Land Trusts "Mt. Rainier Gateway Initiative" to protect the habitat and scenic view shed along the corridor of scenic Highway 706 E, "The Road to Rainier".
The Ashford Community Park and Performing Arts Center will provide a park with hiking and biking trails, public restrooms and an excellent venue built for Music, Theater, Weddings, corporate retreats, community meetings and events.

Back Door Slam (BDS) is fronted by young gun Davy Knowles, 19 year-old guitarist, singer and songwriter from the Isle of Man. Displaying both prodigious talent and ambition from an early age, Davy's musical tastes range from Texas blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan to modern rockers Oasis right through to jazz & Celtic music, with a heavy dose of John Mayall, Rory Gallagher and Robert Cray. Blues fans will no doubt notice that the band's name has been borrowed from a classic Robert Cray song - their sound is also influenced by many other Blues greats, including Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf, Bert Jansch and, of course, Mark Knopfler.
Davy's own songwriting style has developed a very personal and individual tone, with songs ranging from the touching ballad 'Too Good For Me' to the all-out blues rock of 'Come Home' and even a taste of Cream in 'Outside Woman'.
There's a new sheriff in town! Following their performance at the Rivoli, BDS will continue on its journey and will perform on March 14 at SXSW in Austin. Sylvia Simpson is well known to Hamilton art lovers for her Hamilton (Ontario) cityscapes and street scenes. Currently, she has seventeen paintings on view at the Hamilton Public Library - 4th floor.
"Keeping Watch" is a large watercolour that depicts the Hamilton Cemetery on York St against the backdrop of homes on Woodbine Ave. "Hamilton: All Around the Harbour" is a bird's-eye view of the entire lower city stretching north to Rattlesnake Point and east to the CN Tower. "CAMCO and Fall Mums" shows the factory - since demolished - against a sea of flowers. "Ramona's Mother's Backyard" depicts a garden hide-a-way among the century frame houses in Dundas.
There are many other prints and paintings of homes and neighbourhoods to enjoy.The show continues till March 30/2007. Make sure you sign the guest book!
