2007 IRISHFEST 2000 NEEDS MORE VOLUNTEERS
Hi:
With the addition of our Friday night show, we find ourselves still needing some volunteers for this year's Festival. This year you will join more than 300 others in helping us to produce the best festival possible. The slots available are late afternoon and evening on Saturday, September 15th.
Volunteering is a great way to see the inner workings of Irish 2000 while saving yourself a little money and hassle. Volunteers typically work one four-hour shift at one of a variety of jobs and in return receive:
1) Free Admission
2) A one-of-a-kind festival volunteer shirt
3) Free Parking

We are very pleased to welcome back, our good pal from Toronto, Denis Keldie. As a studio musician Denis Keldie has over a hundred albums to his credit, as well as numerous film and TV projects. Recent CDs include Rita Coolidge with Ry Cooder, Natalie MacMaster, Jeff Healey, Prairie Oyster, The Boomers, Eddie Shwartz, Jesse Cook, Stompin' Tom Connors, The Lincolns, The Extras, King Biscuit Boy, The Stampeders, Gordie Sampson, Etta James and TV and live appearances with The Rankins, The Lincolns, Colin James, Jann Arden, Amy Sky, Ashley MacIsaac, Bruce Guthro, Crowbar and many others.
Denis Keldie, one of Canada's foremost keyboardists, recently released his first self-titled CD. This CD of all original compositions was co-written with guitarist Bill Murray and features the extrordinary talent of well known drummer Paul DeLong. For more info on the CD :

His wonderfully literate songs paint pictures in your head with his thought-provoking lyrics. His song, “I Believe”, from Couple of Times Round the Sun, was delivered worldwide through RadioDirectx and in the first month received 149 requests for the full CD, based just on the strength of this one song.
Rob’s written for Glen Campbell Music, Criterion/Atlantic Music and Don Goodman Music in the USA. In 2002, he received a Canadian Radio Music Award for his songwriting. The following year, Rob was a “New Folk” winner at highly regarded Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, joining the ranks of past emerging artists and alumni such as Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, Shawn Colvin, Steve Earle, Tom Russell, and Nancy Griffith.
Rob will be performing at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival (his schedule is below). Rob is putting the finishing touches on his new CD, which is slated for release early next year.

We recently recorded a live performance and interview on a Toronto radio station called Take 5. Our host, Rosie Del Campo, was gracious and asked some good questions! You can listen to the edited version here. Watch for next month's newsletter in which I unveil my new guitar handcrafted by Luis Feu de Mesquita! The guitar, which is in its final stages, is absolutely gorgeous and has many unique features which I will discuss in my next letter.

"Hurray for the Underdogs"
The music business has always been a tough game, but sometimes it pays to keep your nose to the grindstone.Seattle's Too Slim and the Taildraggers have always believed in the "Do it Yourself" approach.
Their latest CD, "The Fortune Teller", has entered the Billboard Blues Chart at #10 in the Nation. They have accomplished this without retail distribution. The band has shopped the record to record companies and distributor's, but have received little or no response. Too Slim and the Taildraggers have not been deterred by the apathy of the music establishment; instead, they have forged ahead on their own.
Tim "Too Slim" Langford started his own Indie Label "Underworld Records" then hit the road and the Internet. They have relied on Internet and venue sales to distribute their music to the people. The result has been a top ten placement on the Billboard Blues Chart. This is no small feat, considering that the other acts in the top ten include the "Black Snake Moan" soundtrack, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tab Benoit, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Joan Armatrading, George Thorogood, Derek Trucks, and Gary Moore.
It looks as though Too Slim and the Taildraggers music may hit the stores after all. They have been approached by Allegro Distribution and have a verbal agreement for a distribution deal by fall of 2007. In the meantime, the band will continue its "Do it Yourself" approach. It proves that with hard work and determination, unsigned groups such as Too Slim and the Taildraggers can still compete with the major labels.

BOP PRESENTS SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT AND OUR MERCURY
Planet Ze, Edmonton, AB - Aug. 17-18/07
On August 17 & 18, Brent Oliver Presents (BOP) is proud to host a special show for two of Edmonton ’s best. Local Juno nominees and Normals Welcome/Six Shooter recording artists Shout out out out out play the Planet Ze Design Centre at 10055 80 Ave. This interesting and intimate venue is the perfect venue for the electro dance party that SO4 brings to the stage. This is the group’s first show since New Year’s Eve and may be their only performance of 2007.
Besides Shout out out out out headlining, both shows will feature the farewell performance for Edmonton ’s Our Mercury. Our Mercury evolved from solid punk rock background (as Misdemeanor) into a band with diverse influences and a purposeful sound and message. In keeping with what the name Our Mercury represents, John explains, "It means so many different things: it is the only metal that is liquid; it’s poisonous; it’s the name of a planet; it’s a Greek god who was a messenger. The music is our mercury, it is our message to the people, and not the same old message; it is unique, fluid and mobile." Calling it quits after being a band for close to 11 years, Our Mercury decides to send it off with their friends’ (and producer Nik Kozub) band, SO4.
Rounding out the bill is Boston ’s San Serac. After releasing Ice Age on his own Frog Man Jake label, San Serac played countless shows in the U.S. and Europe with ADULT, Wilderness, Chromatics, Height, Colder, Ratatat, DAT Politics and The Gossip to name a few, and at parties like Cobra Kai, P.S.1 Warm Up, Horse Meat Disco, Tax Lo, POP! and Dirty Down. Part of Trevor Jackson's (Playgroup) influential Output Recordings label in the UK (before it folded last year), San Serac is the newest signing to Normals Welcome Records with his new album, 'Professional', due out this fall. This will be his first Edmonton performance.

On Friday, August 24, 2007, the Alabama Blues Project (ABP) will be hosting its annual art and blues bash at the L&N Station in downtown Tuscaloosa from 7 p.m. until 12 a.m. This wonderful and entertaining event aims to raise awareness about our blues education programs and the children we reach, as well as helping us raise much-needed funding to pursue our mission.

SNOQUALMIE BLUES FESTIVAL - AUGUST 4-5/07
Hey, Blues Friends - 'hope you can all come out to my little blues celebration this weekend, in Snoqualmie (WA). The 2007 talent lineup is probably the strongest list of the past 7 years, with many featured bands already carrying top headliner status. With so many major blues festivals falling on the same weekend, in our area, the genuine blues coming out of Snoqualmie will certainly hold their own against any national blues rockers.
Both Saturday and Sunday will feature a wide range of true blues styles, presented by some of the Northwest's favorite, crowd pleasing groups. And it's all FREE!
A popular feature of Snoqualmie's 69th annual Railroad Days summer event, the Sno-Blues Fest, has long been considered a fantastic Northwest blues showcase. Railroad Days also features a giant, classic car show, rows of arts & craft booths, featuring local artisans, many unique food vendors and a great beer garden located right by the stage. Sno-Blues co-sponsor, the Washington Blues Society, will also have their booth at the stage area, in support of the many superb local blues artists. The show starts on Saturday, after the big parade, about 1 pm, which is the starting time for Sunday too.

LARRY LEBLANC STEPS DOWN FROM BILLBOARD (July 30, 2007)
TORONTO: Canadian bureau chief of Billboard, the U.S.-based music trade he has been associated with since 1991, Larry LeBlanc is stepping down from the publication effective immediately. He is being replaced by Toronto-based journalist Robert Thompson who writes the “Going for the Green” golf blog, which comments on golf issues.
“Obviously, one doesn’t relish being replaced but those who know me know I’ve talked of leaving Billboard for years”, says LeBlanc. “I’m proud of my coverage of Canada for the publication. I certainly feel I’ve helped bringCanadian music to global markets.
“Seventeen years is a very good run", adds LeBlanc. "But I’ve had a successful freelance career dating back to 1965. If anything, I am probably busier today than I have ever been as a writer.”
During his tenure at Billboard, LeBlanc interviewed hundreds of Canadian artists and songwriters, including pivotal coverage of such acts as Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Barenaked Ladies, Alanis Morissette, Sarah Harmer, Broken Social Scene, K-os, Diana Krall, Jane Bunnett, Luc Plamandon, Holly Cole, and many others. As well, he wrote ground-breaking articles spotlighting Quebec, Atlantic Canada music scenes, blues, folk, and independent music. As well, he wrote extensively on copyright, music retail, distribution, and technology issues. LeBlanc has been a leading figure in Canadian music for four decades. He has been extensively quoted on music issues in hundreds of publications, including Time and The New York Times.
Legendary BBC-2 DJ/historian Bob Harris described him in Maverick magazine in 2006 as "the glue that holds the Canadian music industry together." He was Canadian editor of the late U.S.- based music trade Record World from 1970-1980 and also the co-founder of the late Canadian music trade The Record.
In recent years, LeBlanc has acted as a consultant for the Canadian Competition Bureau, the Canadian Private Copying Collective, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, CHUM Ltd., FACTOR, and the Neighbouring Rights Collective of Canada.
LeBlanc was the associate producer of the 1996 four-CD box set, “Oh What A Feeling” and co-executive producer of its follow-up, “Oh What A Feeling 2”, in 2001. The two comprehensive retrospectives of Canadian music raised $4.8 million for Canadian charities.
With his wife, radio promoter/publicist Anya Wilson, LeBlanc will also continue to operate the publishing firm, Brycemoor Music, handling Dave Gunning, Joel Kroeker, Alana Levandoski, and The Brothers Chaffey.
