PETER AND THE WOLVES - NEWSLETTER (AUGUST 2011)

Peter and the Wolves August 2011

New Songs

I'm going in to Dave Poulin's Studio Nine with Tom McMahon [bass] and Pete Beaudoin [drums] later this month to record beds for some new songs and re-arrangements of some old ones. I'm anxious for you to hear these new tunes.

A Rare Live Show

We don't play many live gigs [see our "Peter and the Wolves Live Performance Manifesto" next month], but we've been playing at the Ottawa and District Labour Council's Labour Day Picnic for quite a few years now. It's outdoors at McNab Park [corner of Bronson and Gladstone] on Monday, September 5, and admission is free. Sneezy Waters plays at 1:00, and we're on at 2:30. With me are Tom and Pete, as well as Rene Fortier [Latin percussion], Mark Ferguson [keys], Brian Asselin [tenor sax] and Dave Arthur [trombone and vocals].

For The Guitar/Theory Geek

Most of you familiar with our CD, Love/Hate Thing, are aware of the influence of Steely Dan on our music. I've always liked the slick chord progressions/voicings that Becker and Fagan apply to their songs. There's one chord, in particular, that appears in almost everything they've written, which they've dubbed the "mu major" chord. The voicings for this chord can be challenging to a guitar player, so I've published a couple of articles hoping to shed some light on the subject. They are:

http://www.ezinearticles.com/?The-Steely-Dan-Mu-Major-Chord-%5BAnd-Beyond%5D-For-Guitarists,-Part-Two&id=6165165

See you next month! - Peter

ZOMBIFIED - BRAND-NEW CD RELEASE BY S.C.O.T.S. (SEPT. 27)

ZOMBIFIED HITS STORES SEPTEMBER 27! PRE-ORDER SOON! NEW TOUR DATES!

Zombified!! Zombified, Southern Culture On The Skids’ tribute to the horror and exploitation movies that populated Southern theaters and drive-ins during the 60s and 70s, is being released this fall on Kudzu Records. Originally released in Australia as an eight song EP in 1998, the Zombified Extended Release is now a full LP with the addition of five new tunes, and will receive its first U.S. release September 27. It will be available for pre-order soon at SCOTS.com. Check back soon, you creepy crawlers!

The new and improved Zombified has been re-mastered and re-packaged with cover art by Sean Starwars and design by Yee Haw industries. Rick Miller, guitarist and singer for the band said, “you know, the Zombified EP never had a proper U.S. release and the band is excited about it happening now as a full album.” The album will be available in all formats, CD, digital download and LP. The LP is a limited edition of 1000 on blood red vinyl complete with CD inside! Zombified will be for sale this September in record stores, web stores and at scots.com.

Download the title track from Zombified for FREE at scots.com!

"I was always attracted to low budget DIY films," said Miller. "Maybe it was the lurid posters and newspaper ads that sucked me in as a kid. Later, I got into the directors, like Mario Bava, Hershell Gordon Lewis and George Romero, to name just a few. They made some entertaining and pretty disturbing movies from way outside the mainstream. A big influence on my approach to making music!"

The band’s music is no stranger to horror/exploitation films. Previous SCOTS songs can be found in soundtracks like the Spanish psycho classic "Perdita Durango," directed by Alex de la Iglesia and starring future Academy Award winner Javier Bardem. In the teen screamer "I Know What You Did Last Summer" the band makes an on screen appearance playing "My Baby's Got The Strangest Ways." SCOTS also supplied the soundtrack to "Blood Feast II, Buffet of Blood," the sequel to HGL's original gore epic.

Check out the tour dates and c'mon and get good and greasy at a SCOTS show near you!

"Chris Grabenstein hasn't forgotten how it feels to be a sixth grade boy. It's evident in his ghost stories for middle school readers. Few middle school boys would turn down a book about ghosts, zombies, and a hidden treasure of Confederate gold. Throw in voodoo, cemeteries, and the new school year, and it's obvious that Grabenstein knows the way to a reader's heart. The Smoky Corridor...is another winner from the author who won Anthony and Agatha Awards for previous books in this series."

Halloween.

Dressing up, eating candy, carving pumpkins, and going to parties.

Most kids' favorite night of the year.

Not Zack Jennings.

Zack knows that on Halloween, the veil separating the ghostly plane from the human world is very, very thin. Powerful spirits can cross over and do some serious mischief.

In this fourth volume of Chris Grabenstein's popular Haunted Mysteries series, Zack must once again do battle with malevolent spirits. With the assistance of three dotty aunts (and their crazy cats), he must also save his town from a 200-year-old threat.

Advance Praise

"Thirteen bad-seed specters from the same family escape from their crypt one Halloween. They range from an 18th-century highwayman to a murderous Capone-era gangster dubbed "Crazy Izzy" and were all confined in the same tomb years ago thanks to spells cast by Zack Jennings' three great-aunts. Eleven-year-old Zack's inherited ability to see ghosts may be a mixed blessing at best, but it comes in handy when the 13 spectral Icklebys break out, seize control of their nerdy but increasingly willing descendant Norman and embark on a vengeful crime spree. Fortunately, most of the Icklebys turn out to be easily sidetracked, and equally fortunately Zack has allies on both sides of the dirt (as the author puts it), from the aforementioned great-aunts (weird sisters indeed, flying in from their Florida retirement home with a full stock of witchly goods and exorcism chants) to a headless cat ghost. As in Zack's three previous Haunted Mystery outings (The Smoky Corridor, 2010, etc.), the pace never flags. Through flurries of ultra-short chapters, events spiral to a suspenseful climax."

SUNDAY WILDE - CANADIAN BLUESWOMAN PAR EXCELLENCE!

Sunday Wilde, a self-taught pianist, vocalist and composer from Atikokan, ON (dubbed “The Canoeing Capital of Canada”), dismisses the various comparisons attributed to her vocal chops, and rightly so, as they do stand out, at least in tonal quality. That being said, her natural display of versatility will eventually award her a prominent position within the cadre of both bygone and contemporary dames of jazz/blues fame, along with the likes of Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington, Big Mama Thornton, Mae West, Mama Cass Elliott, Eden Brent, Little Miss Higgins, and Terra Hazelton. Unapologetically, when I listen to her recordings, I feel like I’ve stepped into an old-time honky-tonk barroom, way before that genre of music became accepted into the Caucasian musical mainstream.

Her compositions focus almost exclusively on romantic interaction and the various collisions and harmonies involved in same, and who can’t relate to that in some way? The lyrics are not at all characterized by the industrially prevalent “I love you, baby, but you are a jerk” variety, but you still get the impression, however more eloquently stated, that this woman’s emotions (happy, sad, or angry) are not to be trifled with.

I love her stripped-down musical approach to recording, specifically on the What Man? Oh, That Man! release, which is comprised solely of Wilde on piano and vocals, Ronnie Hayward on upright bass (such a theatrical instrument!), and David West on tasty guitar melodies that always blend in perfectly with the piano and bass lines. It’s the kind of sound you could appreciate equally well in a small club, a large concert hall, and, of course, on radio or TV airings. My favourite tracks include “I Can’t Shake That Guy”, “My Baby’s Dead”, “Sunday’s Midnight Blues”, “Don’t Bother Me”, and “Trouble Coming at Me”, but I could personally listen to the whole thing in repeat mode.

Sunday Wilde gets my priority vote for “Best (Female Canadian) Blueswoman” of 2011, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she decided to record/perform a rock song or two in the near future. It would be an effortless vocal endeavour.

Diane Wells (a.k.a. D.D. Rocker/Misty Blue 1955)

Former host of “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada” and “Iron Maidens” (CKCU 93.1 FM) and “Patchwork Blues” (CHMR 93.5 FM and CFMU 93.3 FM)

JJ GREY & MOFRO @ OTTAWA FOLK FESTIVAL - AUG. 27/11

ALLIGATOR RECORDS PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 28, 2011

JJ and the band will perform songs from their latest release, Georgia Warhouse. On September 13 Grey will release his first-ever live DVD/CD, entitled Brighter Days. The 78-minute CD and 2-hour DVD were recorded in Atlanta in January 2011.

The Ottawa concert information is below:

Website: www.ottawafolk.com

Singing with a passion and fervor directly influenced by the classic soul heroes, JJ Grey has written and recorded five albums of original songs steeped in the rhythm & blues, rock and country soul of his native backwoods home outside Jacksonville, Florida. Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern storytellers and, in that spirit, he fills his songs with details that are at once vivid, personal and universal. After a decade of hard touring, he still spends eight months of the year on the road, bringing his music to a loyal, ever-growing, worldwide fan base.

Georgia Warhorse is named after the resilient Southern lubber grasshopper. "Yellow and black, and tough like an old-school Tonka toy," says JJ. "They seem so at ease with the world. Nothing seems to rile them. They're in no hurry, but they have a kind of resilience because they just keep coming back, and I've always felt there was a lesson in there for me to learn."

Joining him for a track on this album is Grey's long-time musical hero and reggae icon Toots Hibbert, who sings with Grey on the "The Sweetest Thing". "Toots is the greatest soul singer I've ever heard and one of my biggest influences," says Grey.

Georgia Warhorse also provided the opportunity for Grey to work with another friend and hero, fellow Jacksonvillian Derek Trucks. In true neighborly fashion, Trucks stopped by JJ's house to record slide guitar for the song, "Lullaby".

Debuting in 2001 with the CD, Blackwater, following up in 2004 with Lochloosa, Grey steadily built his following one live performance at a time. Both albums (reissued by Alligator in 2007) were released under the name, Mofro, a name the young Grey chose to describe his music and sound while still working his day job at a lumberyard. He has since used the word to name his band of ever-changing, world-class players. The albums were met with critical acclaim, including "one of the 10 best R&B records of the year and one of the best of the decade" at Amazon.com for Blackwater and "one of the 10 best releases of the year" in Rolling Stone for Lochloosa.

In 2007, with his first Alligator release, Country Ghetto, Grey reached an even larger audience, doubling both his album sales and his concert attendance. Relix said, "Country Ghetto is a tribute to JJ Grey's rich comprehension of the South's learned musical roots and knack to make age-old ideas sound fresh. Grey and Mofro fuse rock with plenty of soul, groove-heavy blues, and dirty, infectious funk. The deep and introspective lyrics are a breath of fresh air." 2008's Orange Blossoms built on that energy, with even more fans, radio stations and critics coming on board. A 2009 best-of vinyl LP, The Choice Cuts, kept the momentum going.

Grey, an avid outdoorsman, is a dedicated fisherman and surfer and holds an honorary position on the board of the Snook Foundation, dedicated to the protection of coastal fish and fish habitat. He has written passionately and articulately about his love for the untrammeled environment of his north Florida home.

JJ has brought his music to countless festivals, including the Austin City Limits Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival (Australia), Bonnaroo, Montreal Jazz Festival and Fuji Rock (Japan). Over the course of his 15-plus year career, Grey has shared stages with the likes of B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Jeff Beck, Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz, Mavis Staples, Booker T. Jones and many others.

His songs have also appeared in film and on network and cable television programs, including "House", "Flashpoint", "Crash", "Friday Night Lights", "The Deadliest Catch", and the film, "The Hoot". In November 2009, JJ wrote his first film score for the critically acclaimed documentary, "The Good Soldier", that appeared in theatres and on Bill Moyers' "Journal" on PBS.

Recently, Grey played piano, sang and contributed a song ("The Wrong Side") to Buckwheat Zydeco's Grammy-winning Alligator album, Lay Your Burden Down.

With the release of Georgia Warhorse and a relentless world tour to follow, Grey is set for a breakout year. Commenting on his musical future, he says,

"Life just makes itself up right in front of me and I just roll with it. All I know is to have the family I have, see the places I've been, meet the people I've met and to get to play music with some of the most talented folks around has got to make me the luckiest man alive."
