GARY KENDALL - DUSTY & PEARL RELEASE

SEB AGNELLO & WESTHILLBILLIES (WITH KEVIN BELL)

@ THE BLACK SWAN (TORONTO) - FRI., SEPT. 14/07

Musical political gadfly Seb Agnello will be doing a rare solo performance on Friday, Sept. 14, at The Black Swan (154 Danforth Ave., Toronto ON, (416) 469-0537), opening for Kevin Bell's "westhillbillies". Cover is only $5.00.

Start times are:

Seb - 10:00 PM (one show)

"westhillbillies" - 11:00 PM (2 shows).

Seb will be previewing songs from his soon-to-be-released new CD, titled Take Your Lumps.
Hope to see you there.

"I’ve never seen anyone turn a venue into his living room with such ease as Seb”.
(Bob Segarini, singer/songwriter and Sirius Radio's '"The IceMan")

Seb Agnello has been a controversial and uncompromising artist since the age of 14. In a move that would define his career, Seb walked out on his band, The Lords Of London, in the midst of the recording of their first album because he refused to make bubble gum music. Seb has built his career on an unwavering commitment to upholding his principles and standing by his beliefs. Through hard work and dedication to his craft, he has gained critical acclaim and wide-spread recognition for his songwriting, musicianship, and abilities as a live performer.

He worked throughout the '70s as a sought-after session player/sideman, but it is as a guitar player where he has gained the most respect for his considerable chops and lightning fast hands. Although, if you ask Seb, he will tell you "the guitar's just a prop" - it is what allows him to get on stage and "shoot his mouth off" because, first and foremost, he is a protest singer. Scathing and often hilarious, his protest songs are edgy and controversial, refusing to be politically correct.

ROB TOGNONI - CDs TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE WHILE ON TOUR
Hi, All!
I hope everything is going well. This a short message to let you know I will be ceasing CDs sales at my site on September 20th. This I because I handle all shipping & sales myself here, while I am in Germany, and as I head off on tour on Sept. 24th, shipping times will be too unreliable on my behalf. When I head back to Australia in early November, I don't take CD stock with me, so I won't be able to do anything until I return to Europe late February....hopefully (if inspiration hits) with a new CD!
I'm very much looking forward to the upcoming UK tour as well as the German & Polish dates...then looking forward to Christmas at home on the beach in Queensland!!!!
Life's a beach..isn't it? Anyway, take care!
Kind Regards,
Rob
MARIZA AT MASSEY HALL (TORONTO, ON) - OCT. 3/07

Wednesday, October 3, 2007 – 8:00 pm / Massey Hall

Tickets: $59.50 to $39.50 – Call 416-872-4255 or visit the Roy Thomson Hall Box Office

www.masseyhall.com

For Immediate Release, Toronto, ON. September 11, 2007 – Hailed as Portugal’s reigning ambassador of fado, Mariza returns to Massey Hall on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at 8 p.m., after her sold-out concert here two years ago. With her mesmerizing contralto and a series of acclaimed recordings, the Mozambique-born, Lisbon-raised Mariza has quickly achieved international star status and brought the art form of fado (Portugal’s brand of soulful blues) to a world-wide audience. Her three-week, 16-city North American tour, which kicks off in Toronto, includes an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman on October 11.

Almost immediately following her 2001 debut album, Fado Em Mim, Mariza became one of the most popular fado artists. The album reached triple platinum sales in Portugal, received the German Critics award, and introduced Mariza to the world outside her adopted home country. In 2002 she was named "Best European World Music Artist" by BBC Radio 3 and received the award for "Most Outstanding Performance" at the Quebec Summer Festival.

Mariza’s second album, Fado Curvo, released in 2003, surpassed all expectations. It reached number six on Billboard’s world music chart, and in Portugal, the album went double platinum. German critics awarded her the Deutsche Schalplatten Kritik Award, and in Portugal, foreign journalists voted Mariza “Personality of the Year”, recognizing her as one of the best-loved artists in the country.

In 2004, she released her first DVD, Mariza: Live in London, recorded at London’s Union Chapel. She was also featured on the Official Album of the 2004 Olympic Games in a duet with Sting, and was honoured with the European Border Breakers Award at the international music trade show MIDEM. Her third album, Transparente, released in 2005, pays tribute to legendary fadistas Fernando Maurício, Carlos do Carmo and Amália Rodrigues. That year she was named a UNICEF ambassador for Portugal and also took part in the Eden Project section of “Live 8” in Cornwall, UK, under the banner “Africa Calling”, alongside such artists as Youssou N’Dour and Angélique Kidjo.

At the end of 2006 Mariza released her live CD/DVD, Concerto em Lisboa, on the EMI label. It was recently nominated for a Latin Grammy in the "Best Folk Album" category. In 2007, the BBC produced a documentary titled, “Mariza and the Story of Fado”, and Mariza played the lead role in a new film called “Fado”, by Carlos Saura, which will give fans a chance to see Mariza in an acting role.

Since her recording debut, Mariza has performed on four continents at such venues as Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Albeniz Theatre in Madrid, the Macau Cultural Centre and Moscow’s House of Music, as well appearing at the Cairo International Song Festival, the Chicago World Music Festival, and the San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Through all of this, Mariza continues to see the stage as an intimate space, a sort of living room where she might entertain her friends, exuding a warmth to which audiences throughout the world have responded in kind.

For more information, visit http://www.mariza.org/english.html or http://www.mariza.org/index.html

This performance is a co-presentation with the Small World Music Festival and is sponsored by the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Commission.

THE CHIEFTAINS & JIMMY RANKIN @ MASSEY HALL (TORONTO) - OCT. 2/07

The Chieftains

Tickets: $69.50 - $45.50

For Immediate Release, Toronto, ON - September 6, 2007

THE CHIEFTAINS is, without question, the world’s most popular Irish band. For more than four decades, they have been captivating audiences around the world with the many delights of traditional Irish music, with a style that is as exhilarating as it is definitive. They return to Massey Hall on Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at 8:00 pm., their first local appearance since their sold-out St. Patrick’s Day concert at Massey Hall on March 17, 2005.

The Chieftains was formed in 1962 by founder and front man Paddy Moloney, an uillean piper from Dublin. The group’s big breakthrough in America occurred when they provided the music for Stanley Kubrick’s 1975 movie, Barry Lyndon. The music score won an Oscar, and “Women of Ireland,” one track on the film, was played heavily on FM progressive rock stations, and even managed to get on the play lists of some Top 40 stations. Suddenly, the Chieftains were hot in America and a US tour and a series of television performances followed.

Their first concert as a full-time act was a sold-out show in 1975 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Up until that time, the members of the group had struggled to maintain their day jobs while playing music during off-hours.

The Chieftains’ unique musical texture features a variety of Irish instruments, including the bodhrán, uillean pipes, fiddle, tin whistle, flute and harp. Their endearing shows often include many surprises, jokes, stories, and step dancing. The Chieftains have performed on the Great Wall of China (the first Western group to do so), as the opening act during the Pope’s visit to Ireland in 1979 before a crowd of more than 1 million at Phoenix Park in Dublin, and at Roger Waters’ “The Wall” concert in Berlin in 1990. The group has also stretched its musical boundaries by collaborating with some of the biggest names in classical, rock, pop and traditional music. In 1988 they joined forces with fellow countryman Van Morrison on “Irish Heartbeat,” and have subsequently recorded albums with James Galway, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, The Rolling Stones, Sting, Tom Jones, Sinead O’Connor, Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, Ry Cooder and many others.

The Chieftains have received a wealth of awards and tributes. They have been honoured in their own country by being officially named “Ireland’s Musical Ambassadors.” Their music for the Canadian film, The Grey Fox, won them a Genie Award, and their soundtrack for the documentary, The Long Journey Home: The Irish in America, won an Emmy. They have released more than 40 albums, won six Grammy Awards (among 18 Grammy nominations), have had five #1 Billboard Top World Music Albums, and in 2002 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC Radio 2.

JIMMY RANKIN, guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and member of the popular Cape Breton group, The Rankin Family, recently released his third solo album, Edge of Day. In addition to the Massey Hall date, he also performs with The Chieftains as their special guest soloist for concerts in two other Ontario cities, London and Ottawa. The Rankin Family headlined two shows at Massey Hall in February 2007 as part of a 22-city cross-Canada tour, their first tour in eight years. For more information visit http://www.jimmyrankin.com/

TANTRAMARSH BLUES SOCIETY - FALL CONCERT LINE-UP

Dear Friends,

We have a great fall lineup for you:

Carlos del Junco
Saturday, Sep. 22, 9 PM
The Fall Fair Tent on Bridge Street
Sackville, NB

This show is FREE.

Carlos has won multiple Maple Blues awards for his harp playing as well as two gold medals at the Hohner World Harmonica Championship in Germany. Carlos will be touring on the back of his fine CD, entitled Blues Mongrel, which he recorded with Kevin Breit (ex-Nora Jones) on guitar.

Duke Robillard Band
Saturday, Oct. 20, 9PM
George’s Roadhouse
Sackville, NB

Duke Robillard is one of the living greats of the blues. He founded Roomful of Blues, was Jimmie Vaughan’s replacement in the Fabulous Thunderbirds and has worked and recorded with Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Jay McShann, Herb Ellis, Ruth Brown and Jimmy Witherspoon. He will be fronting a five-piece band, including a saxophone player.

Harry Manx
Tuesday, November 13, 8 PM
George’s Roadhouse
Sackville, NB

We continue with our fascination with the 13th of the month. We could not resist this rare opportunity to see the Toronto-based Manx play his Mysticssippi music in an intimate setting like George’s. You might have heard Manx on CBC, and if you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. Manx plays acoustic blues blended with influences from Indian folk and classical music, and has been called the essential link between East and West. He also plays the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, an Indian variant on the guitar, which is mesmerizing to see and hear. Hope to see you at the shows.

Trivia time... Another Uriah Heep mention on a story book:

"From this moment it seems unsurprising that her daughter's crying, as she did then, 'Reins! Reins!' becomes her main theme. Years later, having been wrongfully arrested while hitching to a Uriah Heep concert, Lavinia asks her father why they allowed her such freedom. He explains that they want her to have a sense of judgment, to know where to draw the line. 'But I didn't know how to draw my own lines yet,' she says". NIAGARA FALLS GIG NEWS FROM JERRY SALFI (OF MIDNIGHT GYPIES)

Hello, all.

I can't believe we have passed Labour Day once again. This summer has just been a blur.

Tonight will be the 105th straight performance without a night off for the Midnight Gypsies at the Copa Cabana, and it looks like it's not going to stop anytime soon. We are still there every night starting at 6:30 p.m. I've also been doing at least 2 solo gigs per week during the day since the beginning of June and booking two other venues. So, it has been a very, very busy summer.

I will be at the Maid of the Mist Market Place (solo) in Niagara Falls, ON, this Friday, September 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and then, of course, straight to the Copa for the rest of the evening.

“HERE IS WHAT IS”

“Here Is What Is” is a sonic, filmic, journey to unique and captivating places from the last year and a half of Lanois’ life. The camera work is classic, uninterrupted and deadly committed. The film opens with a magical performance on the piano by Canada 's national treasure, Garth Hudson. The film includes moments of Lanois philosophizing with his old friend Brian Eno during an exotic visit to Morocco , where the Eno Lanois production team has been working with Irish friends, U2. Lanois also travels to the birthplace of the groove - the Deep South, Shreveport , Louisiana and sits in with Brian Blade at the Zion Baptist Church where a roaring rendition of "This May Be The Last Time" is delivered by Brian's father, Brady Blade Sr.

Lanois' psychedelic past continues to haunt him throughout the film as the hyper-realism of the in-studio documentation is contrasted by moments of wild fantasia. The heart dedicated to verite is also hungry for the unknown. Lanois also invites us into his studio to look over his shoulder at a mix being performed live, while he explains his moves and the musical reasons for making them. He explains how he stumbled into being a record producer, naively, through his love of music.

“Here Is What Is” is arguably the best rock-n-roll film of 2007 with guest appearances by Garth Hudson, Brian Blade, Eno, U2, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Aaron Neville, Billy Bob Thornton and Sinead O'Connor.

A full festival schedule will be announced on August 28, 2007. For more information on how to purchase tickets please call (416) 968-FILM or
1-877-968-FILM or visit www.tiff07.ca.

Daniel Lanois
This first time film maker originally from Quebec is finally responding to what people have been asking him to do for thirty years, which is to show the creative process of his work in the recording studio. Mr. Lanois, one of Canada 's musical exports is the recipient of ten Grammy awards and five Juno awards.
In a quiet way, he has helped to catapult the careers of many of our favourite artists to high artistic commercial places including U2: "The Joshua Tree", "The Unforgettable Fire", "Achtung Baby", "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb", "All That You Can't Leave Behind", Bob Dylan: "Oh Mercy", "Time Out of Mind", Peter Gabriel: "So", "Us", "Birdie", Neville Brothers: "Yellow Moon", Brian Eno: Apollo", "Music For Films II", "On Land", "The Pearl", "Plateaux Of Mirror", Luscious Jackson: "Fever In Fever Out", Emmylou Harris: "Wrecking Ball", Willie Nelson: "Teatro", Scott Weiland: "12 Bar Blues", "Slingblade" (Soundtrack), Daniel Lanois: "Acadie", "Beauty of Wynona", "Shine", "Rockets", "Belladonna" and Robbie Robertson: "Robbie Robertson".

Technology is easy to measure but heart and soul is not. Lanois has ridden the constant wave of change and finds himself right back where he started embracing passion and people. The people in the room have always been his power and his contagious commitment is still his vital ingredient. What drives people is what interests Lanois; he doesn't like to talk about it because it might then disappear.
