Blues Duo Featuring Tracy K & Jamie 'Snakeman' Steinhoff Release Canned Heat

Blues Duo Preserves Authenticity in new recording Canned Heat From the top of blues highway 61 in remote northwest Ontario comes an album whose roots stretch as far south as the highway itself. Canned Heat by Thunder Bay's "Blues Duo" was named after the album's first track, written by blues forefather Tommy Johnson. It introduces an unknown bluesman, Jamie 'Snakeman' Steinhoff, guilty of preserving authenticity and pairs it with the raspy and well-controlled torch vocals and harmonica of award winner Tracy K. From the foot-stompin' title track, to laid back front porch blues to rollin' and rompin' rags, Canned Heat weaves five traditional acoustic folk blues gems with five contemporary acoustic originals about love, longing, stealing apples and joy. The tracks are laden with Steinhoff 's masterful fingerstyle and slide guitar work of Piedmont and Delta styles, with the addition of banjo and his gritty bass vocals. Dear friends,

It seems that I’m going to be having another medical adventure: surgery for uterine cancer. It’s extremely unlikely that this is going to “do me in,” but it’s going to take time. The worst part is that I will have to cancel some of my upcoming performances. You all know how much my work means to me. I guess I’ll have lots of time and material for songwriting.

I have an excellent team of surgeons, and our family doc is involved as well, which makes me feel even more optimistic. Plus George, the man who “Really Makes It Hard for Me to Sing the Blues,” will be at my side.

I expect to be in the hospital for a few days, and recovering at home for up to six weeks. Basically I’m in good hands, and all we can do is wait and see how it unfolds.

Those of you who remember my previous cancer adventures know I’m a tough cookie. We’re gonna beat this one, too.

STONY PLAIN RECORDS CELEBRATES 35 YEARS

EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records proudly announces the May 10 release of a special 3-disc set to celebrate its 35^th anniversary. Titled simply 35 Years of Stony Plain, the set includes 41 tracks on two CDs, plus a bonus DVD of 11 videos featuring such artists as Jeff Healey, Jay McShann and Johnnie Johnson, Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters, Duke Robillard, Corb Lund, Ian Tyson, Downchild and Long John Baldry. The DVD also includes a tour of Stony Plain’s offices in Edmonton, Alberta. 35 Years of Stony Plain is a specially-priced set with extensive liner notes and annotations of each track. Stony Plain Records is distributed in the U.S. by ADA, in Canada by Warner Music Canada, and in Europe by CRS.

The music on the two audio discs includes eight previously unreleased tracks, featuring four by legendary bluesman Robert Nighthawk, recorded at a Toronto session in 1965; one track from Canadian blues pioneer King Biscuit Boy; and three tunes by the late songwriter, Bob Carpenter, whose songs were recorded by such artists as Billy Joe Shaver and Tom Rush. Other tracks of note include advance previews of songs from the upcoming albums by Harry Manx and Kevin Breit and Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne; plus rare tracks from Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Asleep at the Wheel and many more. The core of Stony Plain’s current roster is well-represented with material from Duke Robillard, Maria Muldaur, Rory Block, Ian Tyson, Joe Louis Walker and Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters.

The bonus DVD includes some real treasures for music fans. Toronto filmmaker Mako Funasaka created a special tribute to Jeff Healey by melding video of Jeff performing with guests from Kim Wilson to Downchild’s Donnie Walsh and Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan, plus some rare in-studio footage, all set to Jeff’s version of Neil Young’s classic “Like a Hurricane,” as the soundtrack. Another archival video gem is the meeting of blues, boogie and swing piano titans Jay McShann and Johnnie Johnson performing “Going to Kansas City,” shot in 2001 during the “two piano only” session recorded in Kansas City and released on the Grammy-nominated McShann CD, Goin’ to Kansas City.

Established in 1976 by Holger Petersen and Alvin Jahns, Stony Plain Records has released almost 400 albums of blues, classic R&B, folk, country, bluegrass, rock and roll, and music that is impossible to put into pigeonholes. The common element in all of these forms of music is that the musicians, regardless of current fad or fashion, put their hearts and souls into the music they make. Stony Plain released the results – and almost invariably found that people responded.

Holger Petersen remains a self-confessed music junkie, but in addition to his day-to-day work with the label, gives his time generously to music industry organizations. Along the way, he helped found the Edmonton Folk Music Festival (and was its artistic director for three years), and was a founding member of Alberta Music..

Stony Plain has received six Grammy Award nominations for its artists, including Maria Muldaur, Jay McShann and Duke Robillard. The label and its artists have also garnered numerous awards from the Blues Foundation, ten Juno Awards, Canadian Country Music Association Awards, Maple Blues Awards and Western Canadian Music Awards. And on a personal level, Petersen was honored for his contributions to Canadian arts and culture with an honorary Doctorate from Athabasca University in 2002 and was awarded the country’s highest honor, membership in the Order of Canada, in 2003.

All that said, Petersen’s much better known in Canada for hosting “Saturday Night Blues,” CBC Radio’s only long-running national blues show, on the air for 25 years. In addition, he hosts a weekly show called “Natch’l Blues,” on CKUA Radio Network in Alberta and programs the “BluesTime” channel on Canada’s Galaxie Satellite Network.

Today, 35 years on, Stony Plain has built a remarkable reputation. The late Jerry Wexler, the great producer and one of the founders of Atlantic Records, praised Stony Plain “as an independent company, an endangered species in a dangerous world – and a source of wonderful music.”

• Malaco Records building destroyed by a storm, This report quoted diredtly from Ray Fitzgerald's article in SpinningSoul.com: Malaco Records, which has recorded and/or released albums for dozens of soul and blues legends, had its offices and recording studios destroyed Friday afternoon when a tornado hit Jackson, Mississippi. Of the three buildings in the compound, one was a total loss, while the other two had more than half of the structure destroyed. A state of emergency was issued for 14 Mississippi counties as tornadoes ripped through the state on Friday as the death toll in the south rose to 17 early Saturday. Label co-founder Wolf Stephenson and about 15 employees were inside the buildings when the storm hit. All were confirmed unharmed. The buildings are located on Northside Drive in Jackson, where officials say most of the city’s damaged was felt.Sadly, the room that housed the master tapes from decades of great musicians like ZZ Hill, Little Milton, Bobby Bland, Dorothy Moore, Johnnie Taylor, and Denise LaSalle was reduced to rubble.To see a video news report on the sad occurance, click here. • Eddie Shaw to receive Mississippi Trail Marker next week! The great Eddie Shaw played sax in the bands of Howlin' Wolf, Magic Sam, Freddie King, Jimmy Reed, and Jimmy Dawkins. After Howlin' Wolf's passing in 1976, Eddie embarked on a solo career billed as Eddie Shaw & The Wolf Gang, initially keeping the entire lineup of Howlin' Wolf's last band (Hubert Sumlin, Detroit Junior, Chico Chism, and Shorty Gilbert). Eddie will be honored with a Mississippi Blues Trail Maker in his home town of Benoit, Mississiippi. The unveiling ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, 2pm at Highways 1 and 448 in Benoit. Congratulation to Eddie!

• Little Milton on YouTube! Please enjoy this July, 2005 clip of the great Little Milton's very last performance at the North Atlantic Blues Festival in Rockland, Maine. The clip shows three partial songs and a jubilent, inspired performance by a man still very much in his prime. Little Milton would leave us a month later on August 4 from a severe stroke. The HAROLD GREEN JEWISH THEATRE COMPANY, David Eisner and Avery Saltzman, co-Artistic Directors, present the world premiere of a new musical revue, TO LIFE, at the Jane Mallett Theatre, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.

TO LIFE runs May 13-29, with opening night on Tuesday, May 17.

Conceived by Avery Saltzman and Tim French, TO LIFE is a joyous celebration of the Jewish life cycle: from birth to bar mitzvah and from marriage to death, told through songs of the Jewish musical theatre canon. The first act of TO LIFE celebrates four iconic Jewish performers - Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor, Al Jolson and Sophie Tucker. The second act "raises a glass to life" and features songs culled from the large repertoire of Jewish-themed musicals, including Fiddler on the Roof, The Rothschilds, Funny Girl, Falsetto's, I Can Get It For You Wholesale, The Grand Tour and Cabaret.

TO LIFE stars a quartet of Canada's best musical theatre talent. Patrick Cook has appeared in The Sound of Music, and Annie Get Your Gun with Louise Pitre. Gabi Epstein, one of Toronto's leading young solo cabaret performers, recently released her debut CD, Show Off. Dora Award-winning Charlotte Moore, a veteran musical theatre performer herself, hails from Canada's first family of the theatre. Shawn Wright, celebrated for his performance as "Bob Crewe" in the long-running Jersey Boys, most recently appeared in Side by Side by Sondheim at the Grand Theatre.

Known as one of Canada's most versatile character actors, director Avery Saltzman has been acting professionally for over 30 years. He has performed around the world and in every major venue across Canada, in such memorable shows as: Guys and Dolls; You Don't Have To Be Jewish co-starring Jamie Farr; Hairspray; Into the Woods (Dora nomination); Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat with Donny Osmond; and Sunset Boulevard with Diahann Carroll in Toronto, and with Petula Clark in the US National Tour.

Most recently, Tim French choreographed The Fantasticks and A Christmas Carol for Soulpepper Theatre. Other credits include: [title of show], Altar Boyz; Dreamgirls, Evita, The Mystery Of Edwin Drood, Gypsy; Cabaret, A Little Night Music, Guys and Dolls, Camelot, Lady Be Good, and The Music Man.

In 2002, Ginger St. James first appeared on the Toronto scene as a member of Les Coquettes as a sultry singer; her affection for good old rock ‘n’ roll and the lure of footlights led her to Broadway songs. And Les Coquettes, one of the first burlesque troupes in Canada to revive the old vaudeville tradition, led her to form her own group in her hometown, the Steeltown Sirens. St. James also toured the variety circuit with famed Canadian mentalist Mysterion the Mind Reader and a host of other macabre performers.

Eighty shows later, St. James has emerged as a singer as well as a saucy soubrette with slithery moves, legs to die for and a smile to melt the ice in your gin and tonic. Along the way, she worked as an artists’ model, took the femme fatale role in "Lucky 7", an indie film feature (and she’s currently involved in two other independent movie productions) and performed as a guest with many well-known Hamilton bands.

A fundraiser is being hosted in honour of JP (Jean-Pierre) Bélisle on Saturday, April 16, from 7-11 pm, at Koyman Art Gallery, at 1171 St. Laurent Blvd. This will be a heart-warming event to raise funds to be equally divided between the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre and Kidney Cancer Canada.

JP has recently been treated with the Cyber Knife machine acquired by the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre in 2010 (a minimally non-invasive treatment for brain tumours). Drs. Shawn Malone and Christina Canil will be in attendance to speak on the Cyber Knife and Kidney Cancer.

We promise to have a wonderful night with live music including Blues, Rock, Pop and Country, a light lunch, silent auction and a 50/50 draw.
