Hey there... my name is JW-Jones. I am from Ottawa, Canada, and my band is excited to be releasing our 7th CD, called SEVENTH HOUR. Mmmm... has a nice ring to it, eh? We've toured 17 countries and 4 continents, and through our travels we've made some cool friends.

BREAKING BOUNDARIES WITH NEW CD, SEVENTH HOUR

Canada's Top Touring Bluesman, JW-Jones, is moving up with a boundary-breaking CD.

On his 7th release, aptly titled Seventh Hour, Jones has teamed up with multi-Juno award-winning artist/producer, Steve Dawson, to mix the album.

Previous releases have featured legendary guests Hubert Sumlin (Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters) and David "Fathead" Newman (Ray Charles); heavy-hitters Kim Wilson (Fabulous Thunderbirds) and Charlie Musselwhite; two of the most innovative guitarists of our time, Little Charlie Baty and Junior Watson; and Canadian billboard favorite Colin James. Jones has cut records from Hollywood to Sun Studios in Memphis.

Guitar World magazine featured a CD called Guitar Masters Vol. 2 that put Jones alongside guitar stars B.B. King, Jimmy Page, and Carlos Santana, among others, and he recently landed an endorsement deal with Gibson guitars.

After performing in 17 countries, 4 continents, and releasing 6 critically acclaimed discs, it's time for a change. No famous guests. No fancy studios. This is JW-Jones and his band doing what they do best - right at home, recorded in J-Dub's living room by his go-to engineer for the last decade, Jason Jaknunas. BLUES LEGEND JOE LOUIS WALKER CELEBRATES LABEL DEBUT WITH PERFORMANCE IN GRAVENHURST!

Award-winning guitar slinger, passionate vocalist and gifted songwriter Joe Louis Walker, currently celebrating the release of his Alligator Records debut, HELLFIRE, will perform at Peter's Players in Gravenhurst on Saturday, March 17, 2012.

The Wall Street Journal celebrates HELLFIRE's "appealing immediacy" and says, "Walker's raspy, powerhouse voice is out front while his stinging guitar cuts through the uncluttered arrangements."

HELLFIRE was produced by songwriter/drummer Tom Hambridge (producer of Buddy Guy's two most recent Grammy-winning CDs, Skin Deep and Living Proof). Walker, who wrote or co-wrote seven of the CD's eleven tracks, says it's the hardest rocking and most deeply soulful album of his career. His blistering blues guitar playing and gospel-tinged vocals effortlessly blend throughout the album.

Joe Louis Walker was born in San Francisco on Christmas Day of 1949. His parents were both from the South and they brought their love of blues with them when they headed west. Joe's dad played blues piano, and his mom played B.B. King records. Walker picked up the guitar as a child, and by the time he was 16 was regularly backing touring blues artists rolling through town. San Francisco's music scene was quickly becoming a melting pot of blues, jazz and psychedelic rock, and Walker was right in the center of it.

As a 16-year-old,Walker was the house guitarist at San Francisco's famed musical playground, The Matrix, where he played with or opened shows for everyone from Lightnin' Hopkins to Jimi Hendrix to Thelonious Monk. He was also a regular at The Fillmore West. The blues legends Walker accompanied shared not only musical knowledge but also their personal wisdom with the teenage up-and-comer. Fred McDowell, Ike Turner, Albert King, Freddy King, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Lightnin' Hopkins and many others taught, fed, and chastised the youngster. Inspired by what he learned, Walker developed his own fiery, melodic, and always unpredictable guitar attack.

Walker met guitarist Michael Bloomfield in 1968 and the two became fast friends. Bloomfield helped push Walker's blues in a more rock-fueled direction, and he became the single biggest influence on Walker's sound. The two shared an apartment for years and remained close friends until Bloomfield's death in 1981. From 1975 to 1985, Walker performed nothing but gospel music, playing and singing as a member of The Spiritual Corinthians. In 1986, after Walker returned to playing the blues, Hightone Records released his debut CD, Cold Is The Night. Firmly rooted in blues, gospel, R&B and rock, the album caught the attention of music fans around the country.

With each subsequent release, Walker's audience continues to grow, as his touring schedule continues to expand. He's played major European festivals, including Northsea Jazz Festival, Glastonbury, Notodden and Montreux, as well as festivals in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Ireland, Turkey and Brazil. He's appeared on national television, with performances on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, The Don Imus Show and Later With Jools Holland in the UK.

Fans and critics have been celebrating Walker for years. Blues Revue calls Walker "one of contemporary blues' most dynamic and innovative musicians, releasing consistently exciting music. No matter what he's singing, Walker's approach is soulful, heartfelt and spellbinding." Living Blues says, "His fretwork is indelibly stamped with his own trademark blend of emotional heat and impeccable precision -- even at his most flamboyant, Walker sounds as if he's playing ideas, not just notes."

Andy Frank of Roots Music Canada has been a tireless supporter of the Canadian folk and roots scene. He has interviewed, hosted, reviewed, webcast, documented or simply raved about the work of hundreds of independent musicians, helping them realize their own potential as creative artists.

Now, the music community is about to return the favour. Andy recently got the shock of his life: a diagnosis of cancer of the colon. This will mean some serious downtime, with no income for Andy, as he clears his schedule to allow himself time for surgery, chemo treatment, and recuperation.

This all-star benefit concert will feature a stellar lineup of roots, folk and world music all-stars, including Layah Jane, Suzie Vinnick, Bill Garrett & Curly Boy Stubbs, Jay Aymar, Rob Szabo, Crabtree & Mills, Jon Brooks, Rosemary Phelan, Annabelle Chvostek, Shawna Caspi, Grit Laskin, Kirsten Jones, HOTCHA!, and Janine Stoll with accompaniment by Trevor Mills and Gregg Lawless & more TBA, hosted by David Newland of Roots Music Canada.

Peter Karp: "I had met Canadian guitarist singer/songwriter Sue Foley at The Ottawa Blues Festival in 2006. I was there playing with my band and I caught her act. She caught my ear. Nice guitar work sure - but fine songs and interesting voice. A real character voice. I remembered that when I was cutting tracks for "Shadows and Cracks." I had written a duet called "That Smile" and was discussing with my manager at the time which female artists to approach to do the job. "Sue Foley?", he asked. "You sound so different from one another." "Exactly", I replied. I drove with my band up to Ottawa for a gig and a recording date. We met in a run down house/studio. She acted cool. Too cool I reckoned. I'm not sure if it was the filthy surroundings or the fact that the equipment didn't work or that when we tried to sing together we couldn't harmonize that finally broke the ice and turned the whole thing into a laugh. Later she came to our gig and sat in. We said goodbye and went our separate ways. Over the course of the next year and a half while I was arduously touring the US promoting "Shadows and Cracks" we stayed in touch via email. At first the letters were cordial and light fare. But as the rigors of touring, the isolation of the road and my out of control drinking and manic depression took hold, these letters became more revealing. I don't have many friends and I don't trust easily. Sue Foley became a disembodied confidante. Someone I could share everything with which became particularly important to me during my wife's illness. We wrote about everything. No holds barred. And why not? We never saw one another; never even talked on the phone. There were no strings attached - only a safety net. That's how it felt anyway.

Finally in late 2009 when I was ready to go back to work we decided that we would work together. We'd look to the letters for our next CD - and turn them into songs. The result was "He Said - She Said" released on Blind Pig in March 2010. This collaboration has turned into a partnership. As of this writing we are touring and working on a brand new record."

He Said - She Said is an inspired and winning collaboration of original songs by Canadian Juno award winner Sue Foley and critically acclaimed U.S. singer / songwriter and Blind Pig artist Peter Karp. The songs are adapted from letters and e-mails between the two over a 2-year period.

Peter says, "What started as a casual exchange became a revealing account of the personal struggles and dramatic changes that were happening in our lives. Our shared thoughts became intimate. Then, weturned those letters into songs and made a great CD together."

The show encompasses folk, jazz, flamenco & blues resulting in an event that is moving, literate, romantic, rocking & exciting. It also has lots of humor and is very engaging moving between nylon acoustic guitar, dobro, piano and electric guitars. These two songwriters bring a wealth of performance history to this collaboration. Their new CD was released in March 2010 on Blind Pig Records and hit #1 on the Blues Chart for 6 weeks and Top 10 on Billboard!

Coast to Coast Artists Honoured with Maple Blues Awards

Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk, Toronto’s Suzie Vinnick and New Brunswick’s Matt Andersen Win Multiple Awards

(January 17, 2012) – Canadian Blues Artist from Coast-to-Coast were honoured by their peers at the 15^th Annual Maple Blues Awards gala in Toronto last night as a crowd of blues lovers gathered to celebrate Canadian blues at Koerner Hall.

Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk took three awards, including, Electric Act of the Year, Recording of the Year and Drummer of the Year (Matt Sobb). New Brunswick’s Matt Andersen left with awards for Entertainer of the Year, Acoustic Act of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. Now based in Toronto, Saskatoon native Suzie Vinnick won awards for Songwriter of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. MonkeyJunk, Andersen and Vinnick have each had a very successful year with national and international touring and extensive radio airplay, giving exposure to their own talents and further promoting Canadian blues artists as leaders in the industry.

Long-time Toronto talent buyer Randy Charlton and blues scholar Rob Bowman presented the Blues With a Feeling (Lifetime Achievement Award) to veteran entertainer and guitarist Paul James. James has been performing for over four decades and is considered to be a Canadian music icon. Toronto Blues Society President Derek Andrews and Montreal Blues Society President Brian Slack presented the Blues Booster of the Year award, a very special Maple Blues Award honouring outstanding contribution to the Canadian blues music industry, to Liz Sykes, President of the Ottawa Blues Society.

Other highlights include British Columbia’s Sabrina Weeks & Swing Cat Bounce taking the New Artist of the Year Award, presented by performers and Maple Blues Award nominees Bill Johnson and Rita Chiarelli. Other notable presenters of Maple Blues Awards were Stony Plain Records Holger Petersen, Andrew Galloway of Electro-Fi Records, Borealis Records Grit Laskin, SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste, and CRTC Vice-Chairman Tom Pentefountas.

Hosted by internationally recognized blues artists Shakura S’aida and Treasa Levasseur (both of whom gave stunning performances at the gala) the Maple Blues Awards included outstanding performances from Maple Blues Award nominees past and present, including Nova Scotia’s Joe Murphy, last year’s Blues With A Feeling Award winner Rita Chiarelli, Toronto’s Fathead, long time blues fixture Bill Johnson from Victoria, B.C., Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk, as well as the awards gala house band, The Maple Blues Band.
