FESTIVAL BY THE MARSH (JAZZ, BLUES, WORLD MUSIC) - JULY 5-27/08

The festival is spotlighting four musical acts throughout its annual celebration in what is being called the Marsh Jazz/Blues/World Music Fest '08, the fourth such annual event in Sackville, New Brunswick.

Kick-starting the festival this year will be Black Umfolosi 5, a well-known a cappella dance group from Zimbabwe. The performance, July 8th, at 7 p.m., at the Brunton Auditorium in the Marjorie Young Bell Music Conservatory on the Mount Allison University campus, is to be followed by regional celebrity David Miles at Cranewood mansion across the street at 9 p.m.

On July 11th, 9 p.m., Sackville is treated to the sound of Chicago soul. Presented by the Tantramarsh Blues Society (TBS), the great hard-soul legend Syl Johnson and his 7-piece band will perform at George’s Roadhouse.

Ending the festival with a bang will be the Donato-Nasturica-Gearey Trio, also at George’s Roadhouse, on July 16th at 9 p.m. Each member of the band has an impressive résumé of talent and experience. In brief, Michel Donato, on bass, has played with jazz greats like Zoot Sims, Art Farmer and Gerry Mulligan, and has toured with the Oscar Peterson Trio.

Tickets to all events, except for the free concert by David Miles, are $15, but a music festival pass can be purchased for all three events for $39. For further information, please contact the festival office at 364-2179, email festival@mta.ca, or visit the festival’s website, www.festivalbythemarsh.ca. We hope to see you at the performances!
