D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – NOV. 10/12

If you have any local arts & entertainment news to impart regarding the province of NL, particularly of the blues variety, but not necessarily so, feel free to contact me at or

On next week’s edition of “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, members of local cover band Prosser’s Rock will be my guests in the studio here at CHMR. They will primarily be promoting their appearance and those of other bands performing on behalf of the St. John’s branch of Long & McQuade’s annual national fundraiser for children’s music therapy programs. Local proceeds will go to the Janeway Children’s Hospital. As a secondary topic they will be talking about their alternate careers as musicians versus their erstwhile professional day-jobs.

If you’re like me and find it impossible to attend late-night gigs during the work week or even Sunday nights, you should consider taking in the 9 O’Clock Rocks November weekly series of events at The Levee on George Street. This past Thursday featured CrashJonesBand + Bedlam Beggars, and on Thursday, November 15, Hellfire Club and Jigger will take the stage. They will be followed by Wheadeater and 2 Guitars Clash on November 22nd, and then Ken Tizzard and Bad Intent + Monday Nights will perform on November 29. Naturally, the gigs will start at 9 o’clock and be finished well before midnight, so that sounds ideal to me, barring impromptu chauffeur duties.

The final tweaks for Atikokan blueswoman Sunday Wilde’s fourth CD, entitled He Gave Me a Blue Nightgown, are well underway, so there’s a thought for a unique Christmas present. In other brand-new Canadian CD news, Ottawa’s Three Times Lucky is officially launching Down to Texas at the famous Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, QC, less than an hour’s drive from the capital.

In international news, the 12th annual Jam for Cans fundraiser will be collecting food and monetary donations in exchange for some great live music at Highway 99 blues club in Seattle, WA, this Thursday, November 15. The event was founded and is hosted by Sheri Humphres and her saxophonist/producer husband Raven Humphres.

M.C. Records in Northport, NY (part of Long Island), is pleased to announce it will donate 30% of all direct sales proceeds to the American Red Cross to help Hurricane Sandy victims. The offer stands from now through Thursday, November 15. The blues and roots-friendly award-winning record company is home to artists such as Odetta, Rick Holmstrom, Cyril Neville, Cindy Bullens, Big Jack Johnson, R.L. Burnside, Anders Osbourne, Pinetop Perkins, and Debbie Davies. M.C. Records President Mark Carpentieri’s own power and heat sources were out for over a week and some of his family members are still without electricity. You can take care of Christmas-shopping business AND help out our neighbours to the south at the same time – a win-win opportunity. They are online at

I’m D.D. Rocker (a.k.a. Misty Blue 1955), the proud founder and sole member of NL Blues Society (a.k.a. the St. John’s Anti-Social Blues Conspiracy). You’re listening to “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, offering free group therapy, on CHMR 93.5 FM, streaming live online at, and broadcasting on Rogers TV Channel 942 and Bell Aliant Channel 825. Stay tuned for more tunes.

9) Right to Asylum [indie mp3] – “Civil War” (4:02)
10) The Mason Rack Band (Limits of Grip) – “Beast” (4:21)
11) Dirty Names (Sweat Box) – “Puppy Love” (2:26)
12) Big Jeezus Truck (Mechanicsville) – “Losin’ It” (3:02)
13) The Flying Snowman (Umgawa!) – “Beauty and the Beast” (2:50)
14) Wasted Generation [indie mp3] – “Swingirl” (3:55)
