NIAGARA RHYTHM SECTION'S SATURDAY "MUSICAL IMPROV" SERIES

Ok, everyone.

We're starting earlier from now on! I know it's getting harder and harder for many of us to stay up late, so we've pushed our Saturday shows ahead to 9:30 pm. Which just gives you enough time to have dinner, get the kids to bed, pick up the baby sitter and head on down the Ank for some great live music...

What: Niagara Rhythm Section's Saturday Night "MUSICAL IMPROV" Series

This week's featured guest: SAT. NOVEMBER 3RD, MARK RUTHERFORD

Where: The Anchorage, 186 Ricardo St. Niagara-on-the-Lake, 905-468-2141

When: every Saturday night - 9:30 pm - no cover

Penner's old buddy, Mark Rutherford, began his music career during the fertile '60s music scene in Winnipeg, gaining experience as a composer and bandleader through the '70s . This culminated in a move to Toronto in 1976 as Dianne Heatherington's Musical Director.

For the next 15 years, he toured with Dinah Christie, Buffy Ste. Marie, Louise Pitre, and numerous Toronto-based bands, playing concerts, stage shows and other gigs across Canada, as well as in Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Europe and the Middle East. Though Mark is comfortable in a variety of musical styles, his first love is jazz and blues. Besides Mark's newest role as a performing member of the Groove Project, he has also been leading the Mark Rutherford Quartet and focusing on developing his award-winning compositions.

It was a treat to have Mark join us last time and we're looking forward to playing some tunes with him again on Saturday.

Coming Dec 8th!

Celebrating our 4th anniversary at the Anchorage, we're proud to release Live @ the Ank, Volume 1.0, a live CD compilation recording of the NRS and our various guests over the last 4 years. For more info: www.stevegoldberger.com/shedrecords.html

About the Back Street Sunday Jazz Series...The Back Street Sunday Jazz Series provides a space for audiences to experience some of the Bay Area's most important music - music that just doesn't get heard enough - by providing a space for Bay Area musicians to do what they do best. We want to help listeners find the music they love, and we want to give them an opportunity to see how much the musicians here shape the national and international jazz scene. In the coming months we will present exciting, challenging, and always satisfying new music. As well as the music you didn't hear the first time around.

About the Black Musicians Forum...The Black Musicians Forum (BMF) traces its roots to a collaborative effort by Bay Area African American musicians to re-assert the legacy of the music we call jazz and to make sure that African American musicians will always be a part of it. Through mutual support and artistic cooperation we'll create the performance opportunities we need. The Black Musicians Forum says "accept no substitutes."

CASTING CALL FOR "MAKING NECROPHILIAC" A MUSICAL-COMEDY PLAY
Synopsis: "Making Necrophiliac" is a musical comedy about a bunch of quirky characters, who put on a show tune called "Necrophiliac".
Producer/director/lyricist Maureen Chaume and musical composer/performer Guy Del Villano have announced a casting call for show dates in February 2008.
They are seeking two males (age 30+) and two females (ages: one in late 20s, one in 30+ range).
If you like music and want to have some fun, come on out. Strong vocal skills are an asset, and the ability to play an instrument will have us jumping for joy. Some dance background wouldn't hurt, either, but if you have good moves, we can work it.

BRENT OLIVER PRESENTS (BOP) - NEWSLETTER (NOVEMBER 2007)

The Pawn Shop – 10551 82 ave, Edmonton, AB

Doors @ 7:30 pm

Advance tickets available at Listen, Blackbyrd, Megatunes and Ticketmaster

Presented by JCL & BOP

From the first few verses of Today’s Remains it’s obvious that Shuyler Jansen is wearing his Sunday best. Recorded in Vancouver and produced by Juno award winner Steve Dawson, Today’s Remains is an auspicious follow-up to Shuyler’s country-electro-folk Hobotron (2004) and Old Reliable’s rocker The Burning Truth (2005).

Once again distorting genres, Shuyler Jansen and Steve Dawson carefully sifted 10 songs from dozens of compositions to form a cohesive collection of truth-filled songs. Opening with the slightly epic and grandiose "Pegasus", Shuyler braids a tale of infidelity, addiction, death and broken trust, re-occurring themes that seem to encompass the ten songs on Today’s Remains. Culled from several lifetimes of stories and songs and inspired by the words and music of Townes Van Zandt, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Billy Joe Shaver, Shuyler Jansen has delivered this decade’s country folk classic. Strings, pedal steel, upright bass and Rhodes piano round out the albums 70’s country-folk sound.

A musician for nearly 15 years, Shuyler now resides in Saskatoon, SK, where he is a dedicated family man and songwriter. His music has taken him to the US, Netherlands, France, Belgium, UK and all over Canada. Shuyler has contributed guitar, keyboards, bass and baritone to many studio recordings, including 4 releases with Old Reliable, and he has been fortunate to collaborate with Oh Susanna, Jenny Whiteley, Calexico, Corb Lund, Luther Wright, Carolyn Mark, The Swiftys, Justin Rutledge and Howe Gelb.

Hayley Sales - Nov. 14 - Axis Cafe, Edmonton

Wednesday, November 14

Keystone & EZ Rock 104.9 presents Universal Music artist Hayley Sales w/ guests

Axis Cafe - 10349 Jasper Ave, Edmonton, AB

$13 advance tickets, $15 at the door - Tickets at Ticketmaster

Hayley Sales' lyrics and musicianship would make one think of someone much older than her 22 years, but she’s packed quite a lot into that time. Born to "hippy" parents, she started life hanging around her father’s basement Glass Wing Music studio in Washington, DC. At age three her parents moved across the country to Portland, Oregon. Hayley’s interest in music blossomed and she learned the piano at 8 and the guitar a few years later.

She attended the Northwest Academy in Portland, a private performing arts school and graduated two years early. During this time, she had the opportunity to interview the Dalai Lama, tour England with Shree Maa ( a Hindu holy man) and perform for the WWII Ace Pilots Convention (she sang 1940s standards) in Washington DC. She also watched her brother struggle through numerous surgeries for a brain tumour which he eventually beat.

After graduating she moved to her parent’s blueberry farm which they had just purchased on Vancouver Island. She had a short stay in Hollywood where, for a time, she attempted an acting career but returned to the blueberry farm to concentrate on music. She wrote songs and learned how to run the recording studio. Her very first effort, Drifter, earned her the attention of manager Frank Weipart.

She signed with Universal and recently released Sunseed, which illustrates her diversity and hints at her range of musical influences, and which was written and produced by herself. She has been described as reminiscent of an early Norah Jones or the female Jack Johnson. Her smooth floaty sound is as refreshing as a summer breeze. Most of her lyrics are feel-good but she does have a strong social conscience, and we can only expect to hear more of that. She has won the "Female Vocalist of the Year" at the Vancouver Island Music Awards and standing ovations at the Seattle Northwest Folk Life Festival.

She says that, "Music is an exchange of energies and I love the exchange. It makes me feel good and inspires me to write music that I hope makes other people feel good."

Black Blood marks the third installment in the Bionic discography and is by far their best and most aggressive moment yet. Their new album sees them breaking new ground with their own hard, brutalizing mix of punk meets '70s rock with stabs of Devo and psychedelia, while still keeping the explosive, juggernaut intensity that their live shows are renowned for.

They've enlisted the musical help of friends in the burgeoning Montreal musical community like Tricky Woo, The Besnard Lakes, Silver Mt. Zion, Land Of Talk, Xavier Caffeine and even a marching band complete with cheerleaders.

Make no bones about it - Black Blood is as rocking as it gets but still manages to push the envelope and prove that loud rock music can still evolve out of the mire.

“Basia Lyjak has arrived at a time when we all thought stage and studio 'magic,' 'presence,' and 'charisma'had long since fallen off the pages! Rewriting the A & R chapters is easy but I really do feel sorry for the label execs that ran out of ink!" – Colin Lynch, JimmyStilettos Magazine

With Toronto institutions like The Phoenix, The Rivoli and The ElMo having already seen her rock their stages for her ever expanding audience, Basia is excited to play a venue like the 'Shoe, where “indie” and “major”artists alike showcase their talents. Fans can also look forward to hearing a brand new Basia song, one of several she wrote with the prodigious Kyle Riabko, which she plans to record two weeks before the gig with producer Brian Moncarz, of Whirlwind Sound Studios. As always, her all-star band will accompany her, featuring guitarist Ron Bechard, of Sin Dealer and formerly of Edwin, Three Days Grace and Rosita Stone, as well as bassist Dave Carreiro, of Nigel’s 11. New additions Diana DiGiovanni of Left of the Sun and Glenn Nash of Ozonebaby also join the band onstage on rhythm guitars/backup vox and drums, respectively.

With a new website in the works, as well as a John Holosko-filmed video in post-production stages, Basia is determined to finish the year with a bang and start the new one with new songs and a whole tour in place!

THE SON ROBERTS BAND RELEASING "VIMY RIDGE IS CALLING"

THE SON ROBERTS BAND Releasing “Vimy Ridge is Calling” - Remembrance Day Commemorative Single on CD and as FREE DOWNLOAD

www.sonroberts.ca

The Son Roberts Band is releasing a Special Single to commemorate Remembrance Day. The single, “Vimy Ridge is Calling”, draws attention to the loss of life that Canadians sustained during World War One at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Moreover, the song shines light on the broader issue of how wars continue to exact a horrible toll on Canadian men and women to this day.

"The Battle of Vimy Ridge got sold to Canadians as a great nation-defining victory. But for many who studied its aftermath, it was just another waste of lives in pursuit of some other country’s agenda. This Remembrance Day, we should certainly remember those who have died for our country but, just as importantly, we should forget about pursuing another country’s priorities and follow our own path in the world.", says band namesake Son Roberts.

"Cara's new record is great, real, and heartfelt - as she is. No fluff or extra notes - just the good stuff!" – Buddy Miller – producer, guitarist (Emmylou Harris)

"Yes, Calgary’s Luft is a Wailin’ Jennys founder but so much more too. Think Julie Miller meets Gillian Welch on a lot of this, with an occasional bit of Linda Thompson tossed in. This could be very big in Canadian roots circles." – John P. McLaughlin – The Vancouver Province

"This is her time, this is her year and THIS is the album! Ladies and Gentlemen, make room in your music world for Cara Luft. Songwriting as good as any I heard in all of 2006, begins my 2007... and just when you think you've got her style and passion nailed down she busts out in a completely different direction. As I said, make room for Cara Luft...before she kicks your door down!" – Terry David Mulligan, Mulligan Stew – ckua

“Unlike so many singer-songwriters, Luft’s music has an urgency that can’t be denied… as good as anything I’ve heard for a long time.” – Americana UK

"The Light Fantastic is a little bit country, a whole lot of folk and a surprising dollop of rock from an artist who’s quickly climbing the ranks to become one of the stars of the Canadian roots scene. If you thought it was a drag when Luft left the Jennys, check out The Light Fantastic and see what she’s been doing since. You won’t be disappointed." - John Threlfall, Monday Magazine

OKTOBERFEAST IV - OCT. 25 - RENAISSANCE CAFE (TORONTO, ON)
It’s hard to believe it, but this year’s OktoberFeast show, Thurs., Oct. 25, at Renaissance Café, will be the fourth edition of the event!

We’ll be starting at 8 p.m. on the nicely set up stage area (with drum kit and keyboard being supplied by Long & McQuade) in the club at 1938 Danforth Ave., a block and a half west of Woodbine. Admission (for non-performers) is just $5 and kids are welcome till about 11 p.m.

The club is fully licensed with a great selection of imported and microbrew draught on tap and a full bar of liquor offerings. Food is varied, prepared fresh before your eyes and very reasonably priced and includes a nice selection of desserts (including, this night, pumpkin pie, of course!).

Below is the lineup of confirmed artists with approximate times. Several other artists have indicated they’d like to be part of the show depending on their gig schedule, so we’ll no doubt have some fine talent drop by as part of an open stage component.

CKCU 93.1 FM (IN OTTAWA) SET TO LAUNCH ANNUAL FUNDRAISING DRIVE
From October 19th to November 4th, CKCU will be holding its Annual Funding Drive. This is a time where we encourage listeners to dial in and donate money to CKCU to help make up a third of our annual budget.

Last year we raised over $100,000 in donations. This year we are looking to raise $107,000 for 2007. During the days Funding Drive is happening at the station, on-air hosts will be requesting the listeners call in and donate funds. The hosts will be playing less music and talking more to address what makes CKCU such a unique and important station. These include our focus on local news, independent bands, and commitment to providing a very low amount of radio advertisements.

Tune in to 93.1 FM in the Ottawa area to dial and donate! This is a tax-deductible donation, as CKCU is a registered charity. Tax receipts (or giveaways in lieu of) will be issued to donors.
For information on the station, visit www.ckcufm.com.
Please give generously and support campus/community radio programming!
ROB TOGNONI DOES BBC 2 SESSION ON PAUL JONES SHOW
Hi, All.
I hope you are all doing fine! I did a BBC 2 session earlier this month in London (UK) for the Paul Jones Show...it's live, it's got warts and it's real......... You can listen to it here:
Just click the "Hear the show" link halfway down on the right hand side of the page. On one track, the producer dragged out and played on an old Hammond organ with us! Cool! You can also listen to two other tracks, plus view some photos of the session. The drummer is Mike Hellier & the bass player is Gary Rackman, both from the Sherman Robertson Band. Gary plays a mean fretless bass & Mr. Hellier (Hell, as I call him) is...Hell on drums!
You can also submit a comment to the BBC if you wish to, as they may be published a little later on the site. (Click "Your Comments", top right hand side).
You can catch a glimpes of the guys here:
It was a little mid-week gig in a bar in Purley, London...there's 3 scary road-worn heads for ya!
ALSO, on the Myspace page, there may be a track or 2 to download that you may not have yet (not sure who's got what!...old age catching up)
If you are in the regional part of Germany for the following gigs this weekend, come and join us!
19 Fri - Deutschland IDAR OBERSTEIN - Dampfschleife
20 Sat - Deutschland RHEDE - New Orleans
That's it for now...take care!
Kind Regards
Rob

REVOLVER Bio:

Nick Walsh - Lead Vocals, Guitars; Laurie-Anne Green - Bass; Tyson Emanuel - Guitars; Wolfgang Verbeke - Guitars; Ryan Abramowitz - Drums

REVOLVER is a band led by singer-songwriter Nick Walsh. Most ‘rockers’ will remember Walsh from Canadian Juno Award winning hard rock band, Slik Toxik. REVOLVER’s sound and music is a hybrid of the best elements of the Devil’s music: edgy, dangerous, melodic and hooky, bringing a paradigm shift to the arena of rock.

Media have mentioned that REVOLVER has elements from modern hard rock/alternative metal masters Alice In Chains and Soundgarden or even modern rock act the Foo Fighters fused with tones reminiscent of Ozzy, Metallica and Scorpions. It’s been said, that REVOLVER has created something fresh and exciting in an otherwise stagnating genre. With the conclusion that no one has definitive comparisons, it could be said that REVOLVER is at the forefront of the “New Wave Of Melodic Metal.”

REVOLVER 's debut album titled ‘Turbulence’ has seen official releases in Europe, the U.K. and Canada through companies such as Drakkar Records/SONY/BMG and KOCH. The videos ‘Turbulence’ and ‘Blue Sky’ were added to Much Music’s ‘MuchLoud’ and garnered an unprecedented 20 weeks of rotation, which was followed by support performances with such acts as Kid Rock, Billy Talent, Motley Crue’s Vince Neil, Molly Hatchet, Melissa Auf De Maur (Smashing Pumpkins, Hole) and Dokken’s George Lynch.

REVOLVER offers more than one-dimensional music - they command live execution that is intense, immediate and flawless. Their brand of metallic hard rock definitely pounds as their performance is one that leaves the audience at their mercy and begging for more.

TRACY K NOMINATED FOR OIMA

For the fifth time in less than two years, Tracy K has been nominated for a music award.
The latest nomination has Ms. K contending for the "Best Blues" award in the Ontario Independent Music Awards (OIMA) on the strength of her 2007 release, Old, New, Borrowed & Blues. The awards will be held at the Phoenix Theatre in Toronto on November 15.

Currently residing in the jewel of Northwestern Ontario, Thunder Bay, the native Manitoban garnered two Winnipegblues.com's Music Awards in 2006 for "Harmonica Player of the Year" and "Female Vocalist of the Year", and a nomination for "Electric Act of the Year". Earlier this summer, she was a finalist in the Toronto Blues Society's Talent Search where she claimed First Runner Up after a memorable powerhouse 20-minute set of originals at Nathan Phillip's Square.

Since releasing her second CD last spring, Tracy K's music has been heard all over the globe on various blues programs and keeps attracting attention in press and reviews. Aside from fronting her own four-piece touring band, Tracy K also performs in an acoustic duo of vintage rags and blues and contributes vocal and harmonica duties to a Thunder Bay all-star psychedelic/blues ensemble.

“Fans have been asking for the return of Tracy K since she levelled the joint during her last festival appearance. Her blues harmonica style and Joplin-esque vocals make her a MUST-SEE!“- Gerry Krochak, The Leader-Post, Regina Sask., March 2007

"Tracy K plays a nice harmonica...the real treat is her voice, well controlled, and gritty as a whisky-soaked hobnail...band is tight and not inclined to space-filling...nicely varied arrangements recall Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt, Santana and traditional blues...some truly swell cuts here" - Jeremy Loomes, the Edmonton Sun, June 2007

"Tracy K returns home leaving us this delightful CD...The Right Hand Band compliments her perfectly...songs are very well written, a seamless blend of blues, country and rock....nice harp work and a strong vocal" - John Valenteyn, Maple Blues Magazine, Toronto Blues Society, August 2007
