Ouzo Power is a rousing, one-of-a-kind, bouzouki-dominated, blues/rock band that reinvents and invigorates traditional Greek blues, blazing a trail through heavy metal and reggae to love songs and reinterpreted Bob Dylan. The bouzouki, the soul of Greek urban music, expressed the sorrow, pain and in-your-face rebellion of a proud displaced people forced by war to live a hard scrabble existence on the margins of society.

The music became known as Rebetika music and the convention-flouting musicians, Rebetes.

WITH A BULLET RELEASES JEFF HEALEY LIVE AT GROSSMAN'S

CONVEYOR CANADA ANNOUNCES
CONVEXE ENTERTAINMENT
LABEL’S INAUGURAL RELEASE IS
THE JEFF HEALEY BAND LIVE AT GROSSMAN’S – 1994
~ ALBUM OUT JUNE 14, 2011 AT MUSIC RETAIL AND iTUNES ~
Conveyor Canada is excited to announce the launch of its brand new Canadian label imprint Convexe Entertainment.

The Jeff Healey Band Live At Grossman’s - 1994 is Convexe Entertainment’s inaugural release, set for June 14, 2011. The CD features a blistering homegrown and previously unheard performance from The Jeff Healey Band at the peak of their career, recorded live at Toronto’s famed Grossman’s Tavern in 1994. This is the first in a series of Jeff Healey Band releases from Convexe, as a great deal of previously unreleased content has been unearthed from the band’s audio and video archives.
“We are extremely proud to honor Jeff Healey’s musical legacy with this series of Jeff Healey Band archival releases. Our mission is two-fold: to pay tribute to Jeff as one of this country’s most memorable and innovative musicians, and to preserve the band’s Canadian identity. With Convexe being a wholly-Canadian owned label, we felt it would be a great home for this project,” comments Peter Piasecki, President of Conveyor Canada and Convexe Entertainment.
With Gold and Platinum records, millions of albums sold worldwide, 10 charting singles, and numerous awards and accolades, including a 1990 Juno Award for Entertainer of the Year, Jeff Healey is unquestionably a true Canadian rock/blues/jazz music icon. Over his illustrious 30-year career, Healey’s signature guitar-playing style and sheer musical prowess has garnered the respect of his fellow artists, producers, media and fans, both internationally and at home. Sadly, he passed away in 2008 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
About Convexe Entertainment:

MORE ABOUT CFMAs

The mission of the Canadian Folk Music Awards is to celebrate and promote Canadian Folk Music in all its forms. Until their creation in 2005, there existed no awards to celebrate the breadth and depth of folk music in Canada. Awards such as the Junos, East Coast Music Awards or the Western Canada Music Awards include a few categories that apply to folk and roots music, but without as broad a view of the genre. The judging process is similar to that of the two-stage elimination model used by the Junos via a randomly selected jury drawn from the folk music community.

Ottawa's award-winning blues-based band MonkeyJunk will launch its Stony Plain debut To Behold at Barrymore's next Wednesday, June 22. The new CD, distributed in Canada through Warner Music, is already garnering early rave reviews from the blogosphere in the U.S.

Influential website Blues Report cited Hank Williams and ZZ Top, describing To Behold as "an album destined to place this trio of Canadian talent at the forefront of many more awards and accolades", while BlogCritics.Org said, "This is a band with enormous talent, dazzling versatility, and unlimited potential." About.com said that "MonkeyJunk is beginning to make a big splash in the U.S., and Europe can't be far behind." Midwest Record told its clients: "This is roots blues rock with an ear toward an industrial future, Canada-style."

The trio — which notably does not include a bass player — consists of Steve Marriner (guitar, harmonica, vocals), Tony D (guitar), and Matt Sobb (drums), who jokingly point out that between them they have 60 years of playing experience.

Launching the new CD in hometown Ottawa — a day after its official release is something the band's been looking forward to. Opening the show will be singer Kelly Prescott (who appears on MonkeyJunk's record) and guitarist Anders Drerup.

Last year the band was nominated for six Maple Blues Awards — and won five — and went on to win a Blues Foundation award in Memphis for Best New Artist Debut for their previous CD; the band also placed third — out of some 150 entries — at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

The band's exhaustive summer schedule includes performances at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, the Ottawa Bluesfest, the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival in B.C., and blues festivals at Kingston and Sarnia (Ontario), Beaumont (Alberta), Mont Tremblant, Trois Rivieres and Donnaconna (Quebec). A major western Canadian tour is set for October, and U.S. touring starts in earnest early next year.

Perhaps the final word comes from the Blues Source website: "Right off the bat their own bio describes their music as 'a generous helping of swamp rhythm and blues, soul boogie and bedroom funk', and one would be hard-pressed to top that, either for flair or accuracy. What I can add is that every single time I listen to this, I've discovered that I best not be sitting down - invariably, I hurt myself trying to dance while in a chair."

Note:

Members of the band are available for interviews (and Steve Marriner also speaks French)

MESSAGE FROM CNIB RE CANADIAN POSTAL STRIKE

June 3, 2011

This is a message about the impact of the strike led by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (Canada Post) on Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) services and donations. The strike, beginning in Winnipeg on June 3 for a period of 24 hours, will continue in other locations to be announced by the Union at a later date.

As a registered charity, CNIB has three core areas that are heavily dependent on Canada Post delivery services: the CNIB library; our webstore (Shop CNIB); and our fundraising efforts.

Without postal services, thousands of Canadians who are blind and partially sighted will be unable to receive books and magazines in alternative formats from the CNIB Library. Shop CNIB customers looking to purchase products to help enhance their independence will face delays in receiving their shipments.

The postal disruption will also affect our ability to reach out to donors and raise much needed funds. With only 30% of our funding coming from government, we rely heavily on the generosity of these donors – who won't be able to send us their gifts through the mail.

We hope the situation will be resolved quickly. In the meantime, we're reaching out to our donors and webstore customers to discuss possible alternatives that will best suit their needs.
We're also taking this opportunity to remind our friends and supporters that donations can still be made online or by phone through the CNIB Helpline at 1-800-563-2642. If you have any questions, please contact us or visit us at www.cnib.ca.

Sincerely,

John M. Rafferty
President and CEO

MARIE-JOSEE HOULE & JOHN PIPPUS @ ELMDALE TAVERN - THURS., JUNE 23

Welcome summer with Marie-Josée Houle and John Pippus at the Elmdale Tavern in Ottawa, ON, on Thursday, June 23, at 9 p.m.

A lot happens in a year. Ottawa-based, fire-haired accordion diva knows a thing or two about that. Since the summer of 2010, Marie-Josee Houle has taken a step back from her incessant touring schedule, and music career in general, to focus on her other love - addressing Ottawa's dire need for affordable housing. As a development consultant and project manager for Sound Advice Consulting Co-op, she has had her accordion-tinkling fingers in many other pies, including a phase II for a non-profit and a few francophone and seniors' housing co-ops in Ottawa and in Thunder Bay. She is also working on starting a family. Consequently, the past year has been dotted with the odd musical appearance in Ottawa, Edmonton and Toronto (where she opened for Seattle's amazing Jason Webley). Despite her work schedule, she even managed to break new ground in Halifax and get herself into the studio to start a new album. But, her hair is no longer fire-coloured. In fact, by her standards, it's quite tame. And she shakes her head as she looks at her last entry on her website dating back to June 2010. The new album is going slowly and it's been impossible to decide on a release date.

Yes, it's been a busy year. Despite the grueling work schedule, the passion that many show-goers have witnessed when seeing Marie-Josee Houle live on stage has not subsided. Songs about heartache, weather-induced tragedies and weddings still bubble to the surface, busy schedule or not. Once a musician, always a musician.

On Thursday, June 23, backed by Steve Tippet (My Tiny Circus) on piano, Marie-Josee Houle and Vancouver-based John Pippus (originally of Winnipeg) are getting together to celebrate the onset of summer with a show at the Elmdale House Tavern.
