MARIE-JOSEE HOULE & MEREDITH GRANT @ RASPUTIN'S - JULY 4

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Marie-Josée Houle and Meredith Grant play Rasputin's Folk Café on Fri., July 4

Some would argue that the accordion is the most grating instrument in the world. Marie-Josée Houle wouldn't argue with that, and it's her main instrument. When she released her solo debut, Our Lady of Broken Souls, in March of 2007, however, Earshot gave her credit, along with other fine Canadian accordion acts Geoff Berner and Wendy McNeill, for making the
squeeze-box cool again...

Marie-Josée met another lovely accordion lass, Meredith Grant, from Guelph, Ontario, when they were both approached by short film director Nathan Anderson, who wanted to use their music for his film, "My Lucy Charm".

On Friday, July 4, 2008 - on the eve of leaving for another cross-Canada tour - Ottawa's Marie-Josée Houle will play hostess to Meredith Grant, as both ladies will present their own flavour of accordion music at Rasputin's Folk Café (Bronson Avenue, near Carling).

Meredith writes moody instrumental music. She will be accompanied by Louisa Kratka on violin.

Audiences can expect more bilingual French Café and Gypsy Jazz, as Marie-Josée will be backed by Nathanael Larochette on semi-acoustic and Arthur Holoien on double bass. She will also be presenting some of her newer material, which will be released on her upcoming album, Monsters (October 1, 2008).

FESTIVAL BY THE MARSH (JAZZ, BLUES, WORLD MUSIC) - JULY 5-27/08

The festival is spotlighting four musical acts throughout its annual celebration in what is being called the Marsh Jazz/Blues/World Music Fest '08, the fourth such annual event in Sackville, New Brunswick.

Kick-starting the festival this year will be Black Umfolosi 5, a well-known a cappella dance group from Zimbabwe. The performance, July 8th, at 7 p.m., at the Brunton Auditorium in the Marjorie Young Bell Music Conservatory on the Mount Allison University campus, is to be followed by regional celebrity David Miles at Cranewood mansion across the street at 9 p.m.

On July 11th, 9 p.m., Sackville is treated to the sound of Chicago soul. Presented by the Tantramarsh Blues Society (TBS), the great hard-soul legend Syl Johnson and his 7-piece band will perform at George’s Roadhouse.

Ending the festival with a bang will be the Donato-Nasturica-Gearey Trio, also at George’s Roadhouse, on July 16th at 9 p.m. Each member of the band has an impressive résumé of talent and experience. In brief, Michel Donato, on bass, has played with jazz greats like Zoot Sims, Art Farmer and Gerry Mulligan, and has toured with the Oscar Peterson Trio.

Tickets to all events, except for the free concert by David Miles, are $15, but a music festival pass can be purchased for all three events for $39. For further information, please contact the festival office at 364-2179, email festival@mta.ca, or visit the festival’s website, www.festivalbythemarsh.ca. We hope to see you at the performances!

TORONTO'S LUKE MULHOLLAND PRESS RELEASE

Luke Mulholland brought his inimitable rock style to the Viper Room last Saturday, June 14, at 9.30PM - and performed material from his new release, Further.

Los Angeles - June 9, 2008

Following a successful Midwest tour, Luke Mulholland returned to the famous Sunset Strip and the Viper Room last Saturday, June 14, with music from his new release, Further. Further's 11 tracks combine rock, pop and blues originals with classic covers, showcasing a dynamic range capable of anything from anthems to love ballads. The guitar prodigy wrote and recorded his first album, Road Home, at the tender age of 14. Now, three albums later, the guitarist brings his newest soulful melodies to the public with Further.

Now 19, Luke, a student of the Berklee School of Music in Boston, has already opened for Bon Jovi and Jeff Healey. Last year Luke delivered a 2-hour set at the Outdoor Burlington Rib Festival before an enthusiastic crowd of 10,000 people. He has also served as opening act for several classic rock icons. Clearly, the future is brimming with potential for this up-and-coming blues-rocker.

NIAGARA RHYTHM SECTION "MUSICAL IMPROV" SERIES - JUNE 21

What: Niagara Rhythm Section, featuring some really great guests you've probably never heard of...

Where: The Anchorage, 186 Ricardo St., Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL), ON, 905-468-2141

Hey there,

http://youtube.com/watch?v=53QXzpGoJzQhttp://youtube.com/watch?v=lwnG5zv2Ijs

Rob Quail (guitar, vocals) is a 25-year veteran of the Toronto club scene. In bands and as a solo act, his gritty vocals and energized guitar playing have been heard in most major blues and rock venues in and around Toronto and throughout Southern Ontario. Rob cut his teeth as a performer in a series of bands with Jeff Healey. Jeff and Rob played together regularly over the years, as guests or subs in each other's bands, and in the music press Jeff frequently credited Rob as one of his two major guitar influences (the other being local guitar-slinger Tony Springer).

Rob’s other past credits include as sideman in Steven C and the Red Rockets, King Elvis, Kim Doolittle and the Doctors, and as frontman for The Chairs, Clarksdale, and Groovemonger. Rob has also lent his distinctive style to a variety of recording projects, including those of St Louis-based fusion-jazz master Scott Jones, Louisiana-roots singer/songwriter Doc Wilson, and the Denver-based instrumental-rock Brett Funk Project.

Check out Rob and Jeff Healey together in this clip:

TANTRAMARSH BLUES SOCIETY (THE OTHER TBS...) PRESENTS:

Dear Friends,

We have a wonderful summer and fall lineup for you:

On Friday, July 11, we have Chicago hard soul legend Syl Johnson and his 7-piece band playing George's Roadhouse (Sackville, NB) at 9 PM. Syl doesn't perform very much anymore (we know because we have tried to get him to come for many years now)...this is a rare opportunity to catch some authentic Chicago-style soul blues by way of Memphis (Syl recorded many great hits on Hi Records in Memphis, still Al Green's musical home, including 'Take me to the River" and "Is it because I'm Black?').

Syl plays for us on Friday and then headlines the Halifax Jazz Festival on Saturday, July 12. More details to follow.

On Saturday, September 20, we have Maritime favourite Matt Anderson and his band in the Fall Fair Tent on Bridge Street. New Brunswick's Matt Andersen has an enigmatic personality coupled with a larger than life showmanship that has been earning him a fervent and steadfast audience wherever he graces the stage. Matt's sprawling Blues, Roots and Rock Music hybrid with his sorrowing and soulful voice has sparked a phenomenal buzz on the east coast, as has the grassroots word of mouth from his followers, a.k.a. ‘Matt-Heads!’ For more on Matt, please see http://www.stubbyfingers.ca/.

On Saturday, October 18, we have several exceptional possibilities that we are in the process of narrowing down…please stay tuned…and mark the date!

On Friday, November 14, we have the Guy Davis Trio. Guy has always been a TBS favourite, with numerous memorable returns to the Roadhouse. But this time he comes back with a twist...and that twist is a band that is going to allow him to play music from his CD that he has never been able to play as a solo artist. So don't miss this rare opportunity to catch Guy doing everything that he has done so well in the past for us...and more! For more on Guy, please see http://www.guydavis.com/.

We also have a fine winter schedule that is shaping up already, and will share those details with you as soon as we can. Thanks for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the shows.

Regards,

The TBS Team

Symphony Review - Steven Baric - Chronicle Journal

“Accompanied by the TBSO and her own combo, blues diva Rita Chiarelli tore the house down with stormy renditions of her original material. Aside from the obvious fact that she’s a fantastic singer, her songs are actually quite brilliant and original, and as an entertainer she’s hard to beat. For those who missed it, even though the material will be available on CD it’s the concert you really missed.”

Performance Review - Ken Wright

“Rossini and Mendelssohn at a blues gig? Give me a break you say! Give us more was, in fact, the overwhelming response from the thousand-strong audience of blues and symphony fans who rose in a standing ovation at the close of the concert featuring acclaimed blues diva Rita Chiarelli and the fabulous Thunder Bay Symphony.”

Rita Chiarelli with the Thunder Bay Symphony - Ottawa Citizen -
Patrick Langston

“Her big, expressive vocals are finely suited to the full sound that is an orchestra’s preserve, and this orchestra is adept enough to swing credibly on a jazz number one minute and tackle a country tune the next. Two live tracks find Chiarelli clearly inspired by the orchestra’s power and the crowd’s engagement. She is nothing short of brilliant on "I Can Change for You.”

GABRIELA VARGAS-CETINA RECEIVES A TROVADOR AWARD

Each year in Merida [Mexico], there are festivities to celebrate the "Day of the Trovador" (and now the "Month of the Trovador", as of 2005), since Yucatecan Trova is the local pride (it is the direct predecessor to the Latin American Bolero music). There are many events associated with this. The organizers give out presents to people who are considered an important part of the Trova scene. This usually takes place in a party only Trovadors attend. They also give out a medal to the older and most respected Trovadors, during a public ceremony at one of the main city theatres. They called me up in April to invite me to the party but I thought it was because a friend of mine was being given one of the small presents. I couldn't go because I was in Ithaca, NY, when that happened. I have been playing with a Trova choir since 2001, as part of my fieldwork for the book I am currently writing, so I have been to two of these parties already, as a friend of the organizers.
The other day I went to visit with one of the two organizers of the festivities, and she told me that she had a small present offered to me by the Committee of the festivities. This is the first time I am officially recognized by the Trovador community as one of their own! I don't think I'm the best Trova guitarist or singer, but obviously they seem to think I am good enough.
I am [first and foremost] an anthropologist. This is the second time in my life that the people among whom I work honour me by including me as part of their own in a public, recognizable way. This really means a lot to me.

"TIED TO THE TRACKS" - ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC CALENDAR

The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC CALENDAR & the separate and very updated NEWS FEATURES are now posted, and easy to access at www.myspace.com/laacoustic. (You don’t need to be a Myspace member to read, even to copy, the calendar & news.)

NEWS ALERT: We recommend you read the lead feature story in our June 7 News edition: Congress is nearing passage of a bill that will rob artists of our rights to out original material. Read the story there. There are links that will help you take action and let your representatives and senators know what you think..

CALENDAR NAVIGATION: The calendar has been EXTENSIVELY updated. There’s an enormous number of festivals on the weekend of June 14 & 15, and we’ve got ‘purt near all of em, with all the info you need to go or to stay home and listen to web simulcasts from some of ‘em. You can find the latest news and all the events and festivals this weekend very easily on our Myspace page.

But looking into the future, to find all the updates clear into 2009, you need to know how to go “back to the future.” It’s an aberration of Myspace that after you click “view all”, you’ll need to click “older” to see things that haven’t happened yet. Just click it and scroll down. If you don’t see far enough ahead (or far enough back, since the news archives are in there, too) then just click “older” again, as many times as you like. If you click it enough, we reckon you’ll get all the way back to when “acoustic music” was made by indigenous natives pounding with rocks on hollow logs (bring your loin cloth).

Wisecracks aside, please go read the lead news feature.

Send us your comments at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com. (Please don’t send anything through Myspace email. We just can’t keep up with that.)

Best,

BASSIST DANE KANE JOINS DOG LEG PREACHER

Dog Leg Preacher is proud to announce the signing of Dane Kane to take over the bass guitar responsibilities. Dan hails from Seattle, Washington. A seasoned pro, Dan has formerly worked with Triathlon, Thor, and Tumbling Dice. Now that Dan is holding down the bottom end, it leaves Captain Joe Kurke free to come out and front the band. This great move coupled with the recent addition of stellar guitarist Marcelo Portaro, has raised Dog Leg Preacher to an even higher level of excellence. Look for many great things to come from this group of players. You can check them out in person this Thursday, June 12, at JR Phinickeys (1352 State Street, Marysville, WA) or this Friday at the ABATE of Washington Spring Opener (6000 Division Street, Toppenish, WA). Thursday is free, Friday is $25.

ROB TOGNONI - CD PURCHASING
Hi, All.
I hope life is treating you well!
I've had many emails in regards to buying my CDs online. Unfortunately my older CDs via the Provogue label in Holland are probably no longer available or at least difficult to obtain. I've seen some ridiculous prices of old CDs of mine asked for by some cyber stores. If you are interested in the older CDs (Stones & Colours, Headstrong, Live At The Twilight, Monkeygrinder), you are best contacting Provogue directly to see what they actually have. You can do so by email at: mail@mascotrecords.com.
In regards to the last 4 CDs I have recorded (Capital Wah, Ironyard, Shakin' The Devil's Hand, Retro Shakin'), they are now available for a short time directly from my site. The reason the time is aways "limited" is because I post them off myself and time can be my biggest enemy. I do most of the organising of the band personally, which can run me a bit ragged at times. Also, personal stocks of my CDs are in small numbers, so sometimes I simply run out of them.
Anyway, you can view them at: http://www.robtognoni.com/music.htm.
I return to Australia at the end of July to start recording my 9th CD in August. I haven't got a clue what it will be!!...as per normal with myself, I don't have any songs until I start to record them. Hopefully I will have it completed in time for next year's touring. In October this year, I will be back in Europe and elsewhere in the UK for approximately 3 weeks to play some more dates. They can be viewed at http://www.robtognoni.com/tour_08.htm.
Also in October, my new label, Music Avenue, will be releasing Ironyard worldwide. They will also be distributing it, as well as Capital Wah, in Australia via Planet/MGM, which is a very, very good distributor.
Ok, that's the heads-up for now, so take care...
Kind Regards.
Rob
