A cross-reference to the first overnight radio show (CKCU 93.1 FM) placing a heavy emphasis on Canadian blues and fusions of same (2007-2012). From 2012-2014, "Rockin' the Blues from Canada" was broadcast on CHMR 93.5 FM (where it originated in 2005 as "Patchwork Blues"). “IRON MAIDENS” – CHMR 93.5 FM – PLAYLIST – OCT. 27/12
Programmed and hosted by Honey Girl

2) Randy Oxford Band (w/ Patti Allen) (Big Blues for Little Bill) – “Another Rainy Day” (5:46)
3) Gayle Ackroyd (Give It All You Got) – “Yellow Moon” (5:59)
4) Cowboy Junkies (Trinity – Revisited) – “I Don’t Get It” (3:55)
5) Pat Moore & The Vinyl Frontier (Take It to Heart) – “There’s a Dark Cloud Hanging over Me” (4:41)
Great Big Rock Jam Report – Oct. 27/12
As mentioned in the previous show, I wasn’t feeling well enough last night to check out either The Salty Dolls & the Moonshine Men at the Rose & Thistle or Skank & the Discounts at the Ship Pub. Hopefully I’ll be recovered by tomorrow night to see Chris Kirby, as well as Erin Costelo and her guitarist Clive MacNutt, who are making a return visit to The Rock from Halifax. Erin and Chris both have CDs they are currently promoting – Chris, of course, with his MusicNL award-winning Wonderizer, and Erin, with her brand-new release, We Can Get Over. I’ll be playing a track from that disc right after this report.
In American female blues news, the 2nd annual New Mexico Blues Society’s ‘’Cused of the Blues” Fest took place in Albuquerque yesterday and featured “Women of the Blues” at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Scheduled performers included Twisted Mojo (f. Beth McCormack), Secret Seven (f. Marilyn Hubbert), Anna Marie Anglada’s Bad Katz Blues Band, Zenobia, Suzy Q w/ Rudy Boy Experiment, Sherri and the Ex’s, and Sally Townes. There was no cover charge, but they did raffle off door prizes and collected money for their scholarship and Blues in the School programs. Bluesman Charlie Musselwhite donated a signed harmonica for the auction.
Montreal’s Orit Shimoni, recording under the name, Little Birdie, has just released her fourth CD, entitled Bare Bones. The title refers to the fact that is a truly solo album. I’ll be playing tracks from it starting on November 10, but if you can’t wait until then, you can scoop up your own copy at CD Baby. Just search for Little Birdie, and all four of her albums will come up onscreen.
A little while ago, I was asked by Dale Schimpf, President of the East Coast Blues Society in Halifax, to compile a list of local blues performers here in St. John’s or elsewhere in the province. I could only think of a couple who dedicate their repertoire solely to the blues genre, e.g. Denis Parker and Darren Cooper. That being said, if you are a blues-focused performer/recording artist (male or female) and you are interested in being included in a Newfoundland & Labrador branch of the East Coast Blues Society, you can contact Dale at the blues@eastlink.ca or visit eastcoastblues.ca. Since they are already an established blues society, you don’t need to fret about being the first to join.
If you are not able to tune into CHMR regularly on Saturday mornings, you can always get your blues music fix on Sunday morning or Monday evenings with resident blues promoter and long-time CHMR show host, Terry Parsons. His “Blind Lemon Blues” show airs right after his “Cosmic Debris” musical melange, which begins at 7 p.m.
I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with Erin Costelo on “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers. Playlist selections include male-female duos or ensembles comprised of both genders.
6) Erin Costelo (We Can Get Over) – “Count to 10” (2:43)
7) Clear (Hard Love) – “Billiards Hotel” (4:40)
8 Vanessa Peters (The Burn The Truth The Lies) – “The State I’m Living In” (3:41)
9 Marie-Josee Houle (Monsters) – “Collarbone” (3:48)
10) Natalia & Montuno (Moving North) – “La Fiesta” (4:21)
11) Hotcha! (Dust Bowl Roots – Songs for the New Depression) – “Ain’t What You Do” (1:54)
12) Sue Foley (Queen Bees – The Antones Collection) – “Lightning Boogie” (1:45)

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – OCT. 27/12
If you have any local arts & entertainment news to impart regarding the province of NL, particularly of the blues variety, but not necessarily so, feel free to contact me at ddrocker@yahoo.com or mistyblue1955@hotmail.com. You will get full credit for your contribution to these blues notes.
The new-generation blues music collective known as The 24th Street Wailers, hot on the 2012 release of Unshakeable, is set to record a live album at Bearly’s House of Blues and Ribs in Halifax, NS, on Nov 9. Michael Archer, bass guitarist with the 24th Street Wailers, was rightfully disappointed to learn that the man responsible for the shooting death of Michael’s brother, Jesse, has been sentenced to a mere five years’ incarceration.
Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling well enough last night to check out either The Salty Dolls & the Moonshine Men at the Rose & Thistle or Skank & the Discounts at the Ship Pub. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has announced its list of nominees for the 2013 induction, with the live ceremony taking place in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theatre L.A. on Thursday, April 18. The show will be broadcast on HBO at a later date. The actual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum is located in Cleveland, Ohio. Ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry; however, for the first time, fans can vote for five of the predetermined nominees for 2013, comprised of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Albert King, Kraftwerk, The Marvelettes, The Meters, Randy Newman, N.W.A., Procol Harum, Public Enemy, Donna Summer, and last, but certainly not least, Canadian progressive rock band Rush.
As if Cleveland weren’t famous enough for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame landmark institution, plans are underway to build the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame Museum there, as well. This particular museum’s inaugural induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Cleveland's Music Hall/Public Auditorium, the same venue normally used for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Some of the R&B Hall of Fame induction nominees include James Brown, The Temptations, The Hesitations, Otis Redding, The O'Jays, Dick Clark, Gerald Levert, Aretha Franklin, Alan Freed, and The Dramatics. As well, the Reverend Al Sharpton will receive the Ron Banks Humanitarian Award for his life-long support to many rhythm & blues and gospel artists.
Ottawa-raised Raoul Bhaneja of the Maple Blues Award-winning band Raoul & the Big Time and a long-time TV, film, and theatre actor, is currently in St. John, New Brunswick, where he will be presenting his Gemini Award-nominated portrayal of Hamlet (Solo). Tonight, beginning at 7:30 p.m., is the last performance before he returns to Toronto.
I’m D.D. Rocker (a.k.a. Misty Blue 1955), founder and sole member of NL Blues Society (a.k.a. the St. John’s Anti-Social Blues Conspiracy). You’re listening to “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, offering free group therapy, on CHMR 93.5 FM, streaming live online at www.mun.ca/chmr, and broadcasting on Rogers TV Channel 942 and Bell Aliant Channel 825. “Iron Maidens”, hosted by one of my numerous alter-egos, Honey Girl, by name, is up next at 10, followed by a prerecorded segment of Converts of Reason with Rory and Liam, and then Newfound Records with Wayne Tucker at noon. In the meantime, stay tuned for more tunes.
8) Soulstack (Big Red) – “Stone Cold Man” (3:14)
9) The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer (Checkered Past) – “Get Out” (3:35)

GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT - OCT. 20/12
This just in – blueswoman Sunday Wilde of Atikokan, ON, has
just become engaged – congratulations, girl!
Here are just a few mentions of new releases from Canadian
female musicians:
Guelph, Ontario, blueswoman Gayle Ackroyd Gibson,
recording simply under the name, Gayle Ackroyd, has a new CD out, called Give It All You Got. I’ll be playing a track from that – a Neville
Brothers’ tune entitled “Yellow Moon”, on next week’s show.
For jazz music-lovers, Toronto-based Donna Greenberg has
released a multilingual (mainly English, French and Spanish) selection of
material entitled Song in the Wind.
Lindi Ortega, also of Toronto,
but rumoured to be hanging out somewhere in Tennessee these days, has just released Cigarettes & Truckstops. She’s currently on tour, hitting the
Metropolis in Montreal on the 23rd of
this month, the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on the 26th, and gradually
heading south to Atlanta, Chattanooga,
and San Antonio.
Toronto-based Lily Frost has just released a new CD, as
well, entitled Do What You Love. That release is now also in CHMR’s humongous
music library, and hopefully I will get a chance to play something from it in
the near future. There has actually been
a ton of new releases added to the library since I started back here at the end
of June, but as I usually program my shows in advance using my own
ever-increasing music collection, playlist selections taken from the library
tend to be quite rare. It’s simply not
practical for me.
The new-generation blues music collective known as The 24th
Street Wailers, hot on the 2012 release of Unshakeable,
is set to record a live album at Bearly’s House of Blues and Ribs in Halifax,
NS, on November 9. Speaking of Halifax, it is the home
of the East Coast Blues Society. The
organization welcomes musicians from the province of NL,
so check them out at eastcoastblues.ca.
I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with more “Iron
Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women
determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers. Playlist selections include male-female duos
or ensembles comprised of both genders.
9) Zabeth Dkos (Unsigned, Undefined, Unapologetic) – “Pages” (3:18)
10) Dream Aria (Transcend) – “The Rhythm of Now” (4:08)
11) El Fuego (The Riddle) – “Down” (4:01)
12) Chantel McGregor (Like No Other) – “Cat Song” (2:15)

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – OCT. 20/12
I was amazed to see that Mitch Ryder of
Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels is still rockin’ that devil with the blue
dress after all these decades. So, too,
apparently are Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Paul Revere & The Raiders,
Chubby Checker & The Wildcats, and Gary Lewis & The Playboys. They are all part of the live performance
boat cruise series known as “Concerts at Sea”.
Hey, hey, my, my…
For those of you who get prematurely
excited about Christmas-shopping, Canadian West Coast blues guitarist/composer
and vocalist David Gogo is releasing Christmas
with the Blues on his long-time label, Cordova Bay Records, next
month. According to the press release by
Sarah French Publicity, Christmas with the Blues features seven blues-inspired
standards and two originals and is a blend of traditional blues with a few
hints of roots, gospel and rock ‘n roll. Also sitting in on the recording are some of
Canada’s best musicians, including Billy Hicks, David Vest, Phil Dwyer, Shawn “The
Harpoonist” Hall, Tina Jones, and Camille Miller. It will be in stores on November 13.
For classical music-lovers in Ontario’s
Steeltown, Guitar Hamilton is pleased to present Argentinian virtuoso guitarist
Victor Villadangos, performing the tango masterworks of Piazzolla and the
Sonatas of Torroba and Gustavino. The
performance takes place tomorrow night at the Hamilton Conservatory of Arts at
7 p.m. For more information, visit
guitarhamilton.com.
Athens-based band Secret Illusion has begun
recording its second CD, following the Turn
Back Time EP. Guitarist Filippos
Papakyriakou says: “Some keyboard parts
are already completed, and within the next week some guitar parts will also be
ready, before the drums take place.
Later this year we will release a single that will be distributed only
in digital form through well-known sites...this will be a very small taste of
the new album that is planned to be released before the summer of 2013.”
I’d like to wish drummer John Funkinator of
Ottawa band The Funktion a belated happy birthday. His big celebration was yesterday, although
it might continue into tonight.
This past Thursday evening, the Kidney
Foundation of Canada Newfoundland and Labrador kicked off their eBay auction of
celebrity paintings for their “A Brush of Hope” campaign. Several masterpieces being auctioned off were
displayed in the Rocket Room of the Rocket Bakery on Water Street on Thursday
night. I’m not sure whether they will
remain there for the duration of the bidding period, which runs through until
October 29. St. John’s MusicNL
award-winner Chris Kirby is involved in the campaign and perhaps has his own
artwork being auctioned off for the cause.
Kidney donors are greatly needed across Canada, and since most of us are
able to spare one, please give it serious consideration, or at least buy some
artwork to help the Kidney Foundation with its funding needs.

Great Big Rock Jam Report
Sad news from the U.S. West Coast - Singer Kathi MacDonald of Anacortes, Washington, and based for years in San Francisco and the Greater Seattle Area, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 3, after slipping into a coma. Early in her career she was an Ikette backing singer with Ike and Tina Turner and went on to perform and record on a long-term basis with Long John Baldry, best known for his hit, “Don’t Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll”. Among the numerous bands and artists she worked with was Big Brother and the Holding Company (post-Janis Joplin’s departure from the band), and more recently she recorded with that band’s drummer and his new troupe, The Dave Getz Breakaway. She also made a duo recording with John Lee Hooker guitarist Rich Kirch earlier this year. She released several CDs under Kathi McDonald & Friends, and also contributed to the Seattle Women in Rhythm and Blues project. The Washington Blues Society inducted her into their Hall of Fame in 1999.

D.D.’s Blue Notes
Saskatoon blues-rock guitar teen sensation Jordan Cook (now
calling himself Reign Wolf – “reign” as in “rule” – is all grown up now and
touring the U.S. from west to east, with a brief detour to Austin, Texas, and
later dates in Germany and The Netherlands.
Playing publicly since the age of eight, Jordan seems to be first and
foremost a live performer. I have seen
no evidence of any official recording being released between the Jordan Cook
Band’s 2001 Transitions EP and his
brand-new full-length CD, 7 Deadly Sins,
but there are quite a few live video
recordings at reignwolf.com that you might want to check out. He currently makes his home in Seattle, WA.
Another Canadian band making waves south of the border are Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, no doubt due to their successful collaboration with American female musicians on their Kings & Queens project. They’ve got dates this week in Arlington, VA, Red Hook and Stony Brook, both in NY, and then they are heading south to Franklin, TN, on October 20.
Speaking of Tennessee, and in particular,
Nashville, that’s where Juno award-winner Old Man Luedecke (based in Chester,
NS) recorded his brand-new CD, Tender Is
the Night, with folk hero Tim O’Brien.
Luedecke is embarking on a tour across Canada
that will take him as far west as Victoria,
B.C., and in the east to Charlottetown, P.E.I.,
and including dates in Halifax and Chester, NS
(his home base).
Doug Carter, Greater Hamilton Area musician, author of “Cool Fool”, and co-composer, with Mike MacMillan, on Guitar Mikey’s newest release, Out of the Box, tells me the CD has reached #1 three times on the Canadian Roots Music Report and charted in the Top 10 on the US Blues Chart. It is now striking the ears of Americana Program Directors and listeners alike, getting airplay in the States, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the UK, and, of course, right here on CHMR in St. John’s, NL, Canada. It’s not just a ‘good’un’, mates – it’s great! For info on Doug Carter’s book, visit coolfoolthebook.wordpress.com.
American slide guitarist and vocalist par excellence J.B. Ritchie, along with long-time bass guitarist, Frank Bandy of Teardrop Records, will be performing live tonight in Chicago at Buddy Guy’s Legends nightclub. If I could be granted one musical wish, it would be a free trip to Chicago and a front-row seat at that world-famous venue.
