D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – OCT. 20/12
I was amazed to see that Mitch Ryder of
Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels is still rockin’ that devil with the blue
dress after all these decades. So, too,
apparently are Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Paul Revere & The Raiders,
Chubby Checker & The Wildcats, and Gary Lewis & The Playboys. They are all part of the live performance
boat cruise series known as “Concerts at Sea”.
Hey, hey, my, my…
For those of you who get prematurely
excited about Christmas-shopping, Canadian West Coast blues guitarist/composer
and vocalist David Gogo is releasing Christmas
with the Blues on his long-time label, Cordova Bay Records, next
month. According to the press release by
Sarah French Publicity, Christmas with the Blues features seven blues-inspired
standards and two originals and is a blend of traditional blues with a few
hints of roots, gospel and rock ‘n roll. Also sitting in on the recording are some of
Canada’s best musicians, including Billy Hicks, David Vest, Phil Dwyer, Shawn “The
Harpoonist” Hall, Tina Jones, and Camille Miller. It will be in stores on November 13.
For classical music-lovers in Ontario’s
Steeltown, Guitar Hamilton is pleased to present Argentinian virtuoso guitarist
Victor Villadangos, performing the tango masterworks of Piazzolla and the
Sonatas of Torroba and Gustavino. The
performance takes place tomorrow night at the Hamilton Conservatory of Arts at
7 p.m. For more information, visit
guitarhamilton.com.
Athens-based band Secret Illusion has begun
recording its second CD, following the Turn
Back Time EP. Guitarist Filippos
Papakyriakou says: “Some keyboard parts
are already completed, and within the next week some guitar parts will also be
ready, before the drums take place.
Later this year we will release a single that will be distributed only
in digital form through well-known sites...this will be a very small taste of
the new album that is planned to be released before the summer of 2013.”
I’d like to wish drummer John Funkinator of
Ottawa band The Funktion a belated happy birthday. His big celebration was yesterday, although
it might continue into tonight.
This past Thursday evening, the Kidney
Foundation of Canada Newfoundland and Labrador kicked off their eBay auction of
celebrity paintings for their “A Brush of Hope” campaign. Several masterpieces being auctioned off were
displayed in the Rocket Room of the Rocket Bakery on Water Street on Thursday
night. I’m not sure whether they will
remain there for the duration of the bidding period, which runs through until
October 29. St. John’s MusicNL
award-winner Chris Kirby is involved in the campaign and perhaps has his own
artwork being auctioned off for the cause.
Kidney donors are greatly needed across Canada, and since most of us are
able to spare one, please give it serious consideration, or at least buy some
artwork to help the Kidney Foundation with its funding needs.
If you
have any local arts & entertainment news to impart, regarding the province
of NL, particularly of the blues variety, feel free to contact me at
