It’s with great excitement that the first “Blues Women International” project will be underway in 2 weeks.  International, seasoned and new women blues singers, songwriters and musicians will join forces with an all-female backup band in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the birthplace of the blues, to record all original previously unreleased material, which will be included in a CD compilation this coming spring.

 

This is the first project pulled together by a newly formed group of blues lovers and blues women to further promote women in blues in an international arena, including:

 

The Spotlight: Julia Magness, Shaun Booker, Kelly Chappue, Diedra Ruff, Sunday Wilde (Canadian), Joni Buffalohead, Billie Feather, Cindy Maloney, Pat Pepin

The Band and Rhythmn Section: LaLa Craig, Heather Crosse, Pat Pepin, Carol Dierking, Billie Feather

What a deal!!!

We are currently only 11% funded and need to be fully funded to receive any support.

It all takes place at the Hopson Commissary Plantation in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on January 28^th and January 29^th. This live recording will take place during the afternoon (3-9PM), with an open pro jam at 9PM both nights. The recording and jam is open to the public.

 

Each woman will be putting forth two original songs that will be included on the first project of the Blues Women International CD compilation and subsequently released later on this spring for sale and promoted to various music programmers. It is our hope that this compilation will help further along Int’l Women In Blues to increase their exposure to a worldwide listening audience, and to create further opportunities for these women for live performance opportunities, as well.

 

Blues Women International has brought together a variety of artists and musicians in an array of blues styles, including roots, acoustic traditional, modern Chicago blues style, zydeco and Memphis blues.  This will certainly create an interesting mix of where women in blues are today.

 

Blues Women International has also been promoting the new website at http://BluesWomenIntl.com to create a worldwide database of women involved in the blues in a variety of aspects for upcoming projects in the coming year.

 

The goals of the newly formed Blues Women International include hosting an awards program, as well as bi-annually hosting showcase events and continuing to support and encourage women in the blues.

GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT – JANUARY 5, 2013

Happy New Year to all of you, and I'd like to send out birthday greetings to NL singer Phoebe Holloway, and Ottawa's Pete Beaudoin of Sherry Harding and the Heat and Freddy Carriere of Firebelly.

Local alternative rock band Vegas Lounge Lizard is gearing up to release its debut EP, and you can help them out by pre-ordering a copy of it.  The release date will be sometime in February, but the exact date will be determined by the number of pre-orders.  You can pay what you like, but the minimum fee is a measly five bucks.  You can listen to their music at Soundcloud.com and contact them via their Vegas Lounge Lizard Facebook page.  They also have a YouTube video that was recorded here at CHMR.

Another St. John’s alt- rock band, Waterfront Fire, formed from Apollo Rock and Owls in the Rafter, released a self-titled CD in 2012.  Comprised of guitarists Andrew Boyd, Ben Thistle, drummer Ryan Tobin, bass guitarist Brandon Young, and keyboardist Sean Jessome, the band is currently looking for a vocalist to replace Josh Cluett, who moved away in August.  You can check out Waterfront Fire on Soundcloud as well as Myspace.

Clarenville-based Jessa Rae Strong is a 17-year-old guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist who is looking to join or form a band.  I checked out her YouTube videos and, she really is quite good.  I’m sure she is looking at a good future in the music business, even as a solo act.

I’d like to belatedly congratulate the winners of the MusicNL/Statoil Christmas Songwriting Contest for young musicians across this province.  The first-place winner was 16-year-old Kat McLevey, for her song, “Winter Shows Me”, second place went to 18-year-old Brianna Gosse for “My Christmas Song for You”, and 19-year-old Pete Mills took third place for “Xmas Together”.

Terry Parsons, CHMR host of “Blind Lemon Blues”, “Cosmic Debris”, “Sunday Morning Hangover Cure” and “The Songwriters”, is celebrating his birthday tomorrow, January 6, so be sure to look him up on Facebook and send him a greeting.  Better yet, tune in to any and all of his long-running shows on this station, particularly this Monday, January 6, when he will announcing the Top 20 Canadian Blues Albums, as voted on by his listeners and tabulated by Terry.

California’s Val Starr & The Blues Rocket released its first CD in 2012, entitled Cool Ride, and it is available at all of the usual music download portals.  The band’s second CD, Blues Away, is in pre-production and will be available in the spring of 2013.

A used record store owner in Pittsburgh apparently bought a box of old attic-stored records for $50, only to discover that one of the vinyl ’78s was Robert Johnson’s 1936 Vocalian recording of “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom”.  I thought that was an Elmore James tune, but whatever.  It’s quoted as being worth anywhere from $6,000-12,000.  Johnson, reputed to have sold his soul to the devil at a rural Mississippi crossroads, died in 1938 at the age of 27.

Steve Clark, who has replaced Geoff Goodhusband as the host of the 9OclockRock series, happening from 9-11 p.m., Thursdays, at The Levee, has posted the schedule of entertainers for the remaining weeks of Jan., as follows:  January 10 – Matthew Hare and The Rolling Kings; January 17 – Stephen Green & Adam Baxter; January 24 – Brad Jefford Trio and The Skylarks; and January 31 – Erin Simms and Magnetar.  Stay tuned for more tunes.

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – JANUARY 5, 2013

In Ottawa music news, Ian Boyd, of Compact Disc music store, advises that there will be new CDs/vinyl from The Fiftymen, The Hilotrons, Lynn Miles, and Riot Police, all before the end of March.

Toronto musician and radio show host Danny Marks is very pleased to have won for the 2012 “Best Electric Blues CD” vote by Wasser-Prawda music magazine in Germany for his latest release, A Good Friend in the Blues.

Toronto-based Blues Element's new album has been overly-delayed, partly due to a consignment deal that went sour.  Vocalist and co-songwriter Jamie Browning had decided to sell off her vintage costumes from her days as the frontwoman for Toronto punk band Daphne’s Purple Closet in order to finance the new Blues Element CD.  However, the consignment shop owner, Eva by name, is refusing to return any unsold garments and has not reimbursed Jamie for any of her items that were already purchased.  Buyer (and seller) beware – dishonest people are out there, everywhere.

Dylan Wickens & The Grand Naturals are also trying to finance the production of their newest CD, entitled Love & Lust.  They have a fundraising campaign on the go at Indiegogo.com.  Depending on the amount of your donation, you could conceivably obtain an autographed copy of the CD, have your name listed on the album credits, be added to the guest list for any live performances by the band throughout 2013, have an intimate one-hour concert by the band at your home, and/or receive an autographed instrument that was used in the production of the CD.  For more information, visit indiegogo.com/dylanwickens.

Brad Curtis of Vancouver’s Some X Six Band tells me that The Hoodoo Shake CD was picked by The Blues Underground as "Most Unique and Original Album Of The Year 2012” for the Editor’s Choice Award – well done, lads.

Debby White, owner of 99 Matrix Records and sweetTmusic in Nashville, TN, reports that her roster artists Keith Youngster, with his “Superman” single, and Van Preston, with her single, “My Heart Craves Him”, will both be featured in upcoming issues of Europe's Maverick Magazine and will be featured in the Covermount CD, to be released in Europe, this month and next.

If you’re a blues music junkie who enjoys taking in the festival circuit year-round, the 7^th annual Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival takes place in Boquete, Panama, from Feb. 28 to Mar. 3, 2013.  The line-up of performers hasn’t been finalized yet, but on the bill so far are Chicago’s Tail Dragger (a.k.a. Great Big Rock Jam Report

Brian Gladstone, musical artist and founder of Winterfolk Blues & Roots Festival and the Association of Artists for a Better World, is celebrating his birthday today.  He is also one of the multi-artist “Smoking Guitars of Winterfolk pre-festival peak tonight at Free Times Café on College Street in Toronto.  Featured artists include Ken Whitely, Wendell Ferguson, Tony Quarington, D’Arcy Wickham, Mr. Rick, Hotcha!, Crabtree & Mills, Margaret Stowe, Erwin Shack and the Wanted and Noah Zacharin.  The same lineup will also perform on Saturday, December 15, at Moonshine Café in Oakville, ON.  Advance ticket purchases are recommended.  Winterfolk XI officially takes place from Feb. 14-17/13 at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto.

Renowned musical journalist Larry Leblanc is to be honoured with a Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award at the 2013 Juno Awards on April 20 in Regina, Saskatchewan.  The award is given to individuals who have made an impact on the Canadian music industry.

Vicky Hynes’ 13^th Feast of Cohen will take place at the Arts & Culture Centre in St. John’s on December 28 and 29.  The performers include Vicky herself, Luke Major, Amelia Curran, Blair Harvey, Andrea Monro, Andrew James O’Brien, Jill Porter, Lori Cooper, Bryan Hennessey, Jenny Gear, Sean Panting, and Des Walsh & the Beautiful Losers (comprised of Sandy Morris, Boomer Stamp, Derek Pelley, Geoff and Dave Panting, and Kelly Russell).

Local musician and visual artist Scott Goudie’s artwork will be on display at the Christina Parker Gallery on Water Street ’til December 22.

Sunday Wilde, who just released a new CD entitled He Gave Me a Blue Nightgown, is a co-founder of Blues Women International, which currently has a Kickstarter campaign underway to raise funds for a group of blueswomen who will be travelling to Memphis to participate in the International Blues Challenge in January.  Prior to their trip, they will be recording a live performance at the Hopson Plantation in Clarksdale, Mississippi.  Blueswomen International is also developing a database of female musicians, songwriters, vocalists, radio DJs, promoters and venue operators to foster a global blues community.  Projects being planned include an annual compilation CD, awards show, touring and recording endeavours.  The organization was featured in the November 2012 Bluesletter, published by the Washington Blues Society in Seattle, WA.  If you’re interested in being included or simply assisting in the process, they are online at blueswomenintl.com.

D.D.’s Blue Notes

As mentioned on November 24, I had vowed to play 100% Canadian content throughout the month of December.  However, I miscalculated the date of last week’s show to be November 31^st – which date, of course, does not exist in our hemisphere – it actually fell on December first  and did contain non-Canadian music selections.  Happily, though, there are still four weeks left in December, and these shows will be comprised entirely of Canadian music.  This is my Christmas gift to our nation’s musicians, who have given fans so much of themselves.

’tis the season to be merry, of course, but some of us in St. John’s have lost close family members or friends who are sorely missed, particularly at this time of year.  In that regard, the Compassionate Friends Newfoundland and Labrador Branch is holding a candlelight vigil at the Health Sciences Centre tomorrow evening from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Room #2J619, just down the hall from the Pastoral Care office.  If you’d like to be a part of the gathering, you can call 753-3530.

The 2012 Mummer’s Festival is now underway in St. John’s.  The Victoria Park Poolhouse is hosting a couple of hobbyhorse workshops beginning tonight from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and tomorrow from 1-5 p.m.  On Monday, Tuesday and Thurday, they will be hosting ugly stick workshops.  The Rooms art gallery is hosting a lecture and public forum, entitled “How Do You Mummer, Anyway?” next Friday, December 12, and on Saturday, they will be screening “Mummer Movies:  CBC’s Land and Sea Mummer Episodes”, from 2:30-3:30 p.m.  There are several other events taking place on December 15, including a Mummer’s Parade Concert and Jam, also at The Rooms, and a Mummer-oke at the Georgestown Pub from 5-7 p.m.

Speaking of “ugly sticks”, later on next Saturday night, Chris Kirby (just back from Nashville) and the Marquee will be putting some jam on it when they are joined by the Horns of Justice AND new family member Professor Cowbell.  It’s a big night of funk and soul at Fat Cat Blues Bar on George Street.  You are invited to come dressed in your gnarliest festive wear, since there will be a prize for the UGLIEST CHRISTMAS SWEATER!!  AND, there will be a Jam Jam challenge. What's that? Gotta be there to find out!!  There will be a special opening performance by the super talented Brianna Gosse.

The Long and McQuade benefit at Fat Cat on November 24 in aid of the Music Therapy Program at the Janeway raised a whopping $3,144.82.  Congratulations to all of the bands and solo musicians who performed for the cause, as well as the patrons who attended the wildly successful event.

In international news, the UK’s Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate has released a full-length CD entitled Invisible, and Secret Illusion of Athens, Greece, has released an EP called Point of No Return.

GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT – NOV. 24/12

Well, as much as I love the music of Rita Chiarelli and wish her success as CBC’s newest radio show host/music programmer, I can’t help but feel sorry for broadcasting graduates who have lost out on yet another opportunity to even begin to find paid work in their chosen profession.  I mean, seriously, how are they supposed to compete with international celebrities?  Then again, aging musicians are feeling the big squeeze-out these days by performers who are barely out of their diapers, so I guess they have to find a new way to parlay a living in the spotlight.  Community/campus radio stations do, however, offer very inexpensive training and the opportunity to gain real experience (if not an actual income) in broadcasting.  If you are serious about doing this as a career, whether you have studied broadcasting or not, feel free to contact the program director at CHMR.  The station is always looking for new talent, male or female.  The information is on our website at chmr.ca.

Competing with Long & McQuade’s Music Therapy Fundraiser tonight at Fat Cat Blues Bar is Sherry Ryan, who is performing her tribute to the music of Lucinda Williams at The Rock House, also on George Street, so it’s a great night to get George-faced, as the T-shirt logo goes.

The Statoil/MusicNL 2012 Christmas Songwriting Contest is now accepting submissions for original holiday and seasonal music.  This is one for the youngsters, as it’s open to songwriters 19 and under.  The contestants will be competing for recording time at Groove Den Studios, with mixing and mastering at The Blue Room, music video production by HeavyWeather, web development by Dc Design House, as well as cash prizes and the opportunity to perform (with parental consent) at the 3rd annual MusicNL Christmas concert on December 17 at The Ship Pub.  The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 30, at 4:30 p.m.  Late entries will not be accepted.  Visit musicnl.ca for full details or use that antiquated invention known as the telephone and call them at 709-754-2574.

The 10th Annual Christmas Goose benefit concert and CD release will be taking place at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Saturday, December 1st.  Featured performers include Al Wood, Arthur McGregor, Chris White, Finest Kind, John Hanson, Mary Moore & Marylise Chauvette, Pat Moore, Tom Lips and YOU, the audience. Come out for a wonderful evening of original and favourite Christmas and seasonal songs in support of the Ottawa Food Bank.

I just found out earlier this week that I’m working for a keyboardist/director whose brother is Jim Vivian, formerly of Toronto band The Shuffle Demons, as well as Rob Connell and the Boss Brass.  Mr. Vivian, a member of the jazz studies faculty at U. of T, is very much in demand as a bassist, having performed and recorded with numerous jazz musicians such as Don Thompson, Jeff Johnston, Sonny Greenwich, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Tim Hagans, and John Abercrombie.

I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with selected “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers.  Playlist selections include male-female duos or ensembles comprised of both genders.  Every once in a while I will dub a particular male “an honourary Iron Maiden”.

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – NOV. 24/12

Here’s a reminder of the St. John’s branch of Long & McQuade’s annual national fundraiser for children’s music therapy programs, with local proceeds going to the Janeway Children’s Hospital.  That’s happening at Fat Cat Blues Bar on George Street tonight, beginning around 7 p.m. and continuing on through the night.  The performers include The Replacements, Rust, Dan Doiron Band, Prosser’s Rock, One Night Stand, “Friends of Music Therapy”, and possibly more.

Ken Tizzard and Bad Intent + Monday Nights will be performing this coming Thursday at The Levee, also on George Street, as part of the weekly 9 O’Clock Rocks musical party.  Naturally, the gigs will start at 9 p.m. and be finished well before midnight.

Canadian musician Bruce Cockburn, who has been offering his recordings and live performances since the late ’60s, early ’70s, was awarded a lifetime achievement award from SOCAN on November 19.  On December 14th, he will be joining Jackson Browne and other musicians at a benefit concert for Native American activist Leonard Peltier Benefit at the Beacon Theatre in New York.  Peltier has been imprisoned for 37 years.  Cockburn’s latest CD, Small Source of Comfort is available from True North Records, his long-standing record label, based in Burlington, ON.

New Canadian CDs in CHMR’s record library include releases by Revelstoke, Lower Companions, Julie Doiron, Manafest, Andy Shauf, Sabrina Whyatt, Barney Bentall, Eyeswide, The Unquiet Dead, Danger Cat, Les Hay Babies, and Tippy Agogo & Bill Bourne’s Amoeba Collective.  Additional  recent Canadian releases are out there by Jack de Kezyer, Danny Marks, Corey Lueck and the Smoke Wagon Blues Band, Tusket, String Bone, Grant Lyle, Al Wood & The Woodsmen, and the Jimmy Bowskill Band, the latter which includes a smokin’ version of a tune written by Grand Funk’s Mark Farner from their Closer to Home LP.

And speaking of the Corey Lueck and Smoke Wagon Blues Band, they are on the roster of performers scheduled to play at the Leander Boat Club in Hamilton, ON, on Sun., Dec. 2nd.  Resident sax master and singer Sonny Del-Rio will be celebrating "55 Years of Rockin'.... and Rollin' On".  Other performers on the roster are Ray Materick, Darcy Hepner, We Got Blues, Jude Johnson, Carl Horton, and Ronny and the Rockets.  All of the performers are donating their time to come out and party with Sonny, and the proceeds are going to the CKOC Christmas Miracle.  Sonny Del-Rio has been putting on a Christmas benefit annually for many years.  Having met him in person, I know for a fact that he really is a very caring, community-oriented person, and he’s in good company here, for sure.

Also on December 2, in Toronto, “Bash for the Boogieman (a.k.a. Rick Gunn) – Take II” is being held at Revival Bar on College Street, from 4-11 PM.  The fundraiser’s proceeds will assist Rick with the onerous financial burden associated with his being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, or bone marrow cancer.  Some of the scheduled performers include Terry Draper of Klaatu, David Henman of April Wine, Bob “The Iceman” Segarini, Sebastian Agnello, The Virgins – Unplugged, Wendell Ferguson, and Brave & Crazy, just one of the many great bands Rick has played guitar with over the years.

GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT – NOV. 10/12


As mentioned on “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, members of local cover band Prosser’s Rock will be paying a visit to our studios here at CHMR. They will be primarily promoting their appearance and those of other bands performing on behalf of the St. John’s branch of Long & McQuade’s annual national fundraiser for children’s music therapy programs. Local proceeds will go to the Janeway Children’s Hospital. As a secondary topic they will be talking about their alternate careers as musicians versus their erstwhile professional day-jobs and preoccupations as parents. In the event that you miss the interview, you can catch them live at Fat Cat on Nov. 24. They are all local musicians who would appreciate your support.

I have to admit I’ve almost completely lost track of what’s happening on my Facebook page, so I would like to offer my apologies to those whose birthday or other special event I missed in the last couple of weeks. The same goes with my emails – just way too many to keep pace with. Eventually, though, I will read and respond to any non-spamming messages. I have to say I get far more submissions from male musicians, and way more from non-Canadians, which I find very curious, so if you are a female Canadian musician serious about getting radio airplay, feel free to send me one or two introductory mp3s at ddrocker@yahoo.com. The Salty Dolls and the Moonshine Men will be performing at the Rose and Thistle Pub on Water Street tonight, at around 8:30 p.m. Fabulous lead vocalist Suzanne Power has been doing a great job of promoting other local musicians here in St. John’s, so this is your chance to see and hear her in action!

Tracy K and Blue Thunder did succeed in winning the local vote to represent Thunder Bay, ON, at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis – congratulations and good luck down south! As mentioned previously, Sunday Wilde’s new CD, He Gave Me a Blue Nightgown, is almost ready for its official launch, but she is already getting airplay for a couple of tunes from it.

On next week’s edition of “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, members of local cover band Prosser’s Rock will be my guests in the studio here at CHMR. They will primarily be promoting their appearance and those of other bands performing on behalf of the St. John’s branch of Long & McQuade’s annual national fundraiser for children’s music therapy programs. Local proceeds will go to the Janeway Children’s Hospital. As a secondary topic they will be talking about their alternate careers as musicians versus their erstwhile professional day-jobs.


If you’re like me and find it impossible to attend late-night gigs during the work week or even Sunday nights, you should consider taking in the 9 O’Clock Rocks November weekly series of events at The Levee on George Street. This past Thursday featured CrashJonesBand + Bedlam Beggars, and on Thursday, November 15, Hellfire Club and Jigger will take the stage. They will be followed by Wheadeater and 2 Guitars Clash on November 22nd, and then Ken Tizzard and Bad Intent + Monday Nights will perform on November 29. Naturally, the gigs will start at 9 o’clock and be finished well before midnight, so that sounds ideal to me, barring impromptu chauffeur duties.


The final tweaks for Atikokan blueswoman Sunday Wilde’s fourth CD, entitled He Gave Me a Blue Nightgown, are well underway, so there’s a thought for a unique Christmas present. In other brand-new Canadian CD news, Ottawa’s Three Times Lucky is officially launching Down to Texas at the famous Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, QC, less than an hour’s drive from the capital.

In international news, the 12th annual Jam for Cans fundraiser will be collecting food and monetary donations in exchange for some great live music at Highway 99 blues club in Seattle, WA, this Thursday, November 15. The event was founded and is hosted by Sheri Humphres and her saxophonist/producer husband Raven Humphres.


M.C. Records in Northport, NY (part of Long Island), is pleased to announce it will donate 30% of all direct sales proceeds to the American Red Cross to help Hurricane Sandy victims. The offer stands from now through Thursday, November 15. Canadian musician Bill Bourne is definitely no slacker.  His latest CD, Songs from a Gypsy Caravan, has barely seen the light of day, and he’s now got a brand-new project with Tippy Agogo being released this week on the Busted Flat Records label, calling itself Amoeba Collective.  Bill and Tippy, both famously bohemian, previously collaborated as Nerkelwerks.  With Amoeba Collective, they are joined by guitarist Madagascar Slim, pianist Tom Mennier, drummer Michelle Josef (of Hey Stella), and bassist Donato Scipioni.  The project is described in the Sarah French Publicity press release as “An organic rendition of Blues, Rock, World Beat, with a Dash of Hip-Hop and Country”.

Brownsville Station, who recorded the original version of “Smokin’ in the Boys Room” (before Aerosmith covered it), has a brand-new release, as well, appropriately entitled Still Smokin’.

Canada’s The Donefors are heading out on tour this month with their literally titled “Award-Winning Album”.  Beginning on November 7, they’ll be at Brutopia in Montreal, followed immediately afterwards by four dates in NB, i.e. Le Vieux Poele in Edmundston, Shiretown Publicans in Hampton, The Capital in Fredericton, and Plan B in Moncton.  On November 12, they’ll be at Gus’s Pub in Halifax, after which they head back east to the Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa, Gallaghers in Hamilton, Paddy’s in Sarnia, and then at the Music Awards Ceremony in Hamilton, ON, on November 17.

Erin Costelo and guitarist Clive MacNutt had to reschedule their trip from Halifax to St. John’s last week due to nasty weather, but hopefully they will get here soon.

Vicky Hynes will be presenting the 12th annual Feast of Cohen at the Arts and Culture Centre on December 28 and 29, so you’d best get your tickets soon.  The event will feature NL artists, such as Colleen Power (also our News Director here at CHMR), Des Walsh, Jill Porter, Bryan Hennessey, Sean and Geoff Panting, Sandy Morris, Jenny Gear, Liz Solo, Mark Bragg, Lori Cooper, Katie Baggs, Neil Conway, Boomer Stamp, and, of course, Vicky Hynes herself, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen.  Speaking of Katie Baggs, she scooped up the 2012 MusicNL award for female artist of the year, Mark Bragg won for alternative artist/group of the year, and Sandy Morris won for best side musician.

Following on the heels of his successful recording, Aspects of Oscar, bassist composer and educator Dave Young and an all-star band will perform a musical tribute to the late, great Canadian jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson on Friday, November 9, at Hugh’s Room in Toronto,.  The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the performance will begin at 8:30.  The tickets are $29.50 in advance and $32.50 at the door.  Dave Young, who recorded with Lenny Breau and numerous Canadian and international jazz musicians, was also a long-time musical associate of Oscar Peterson.  He will be accompanied by Robi Botos on piano, Warren Stirzsinger on guitar, Terry Clarke on drums, and Denzal Sinclaire on vocals.  For more information, contact Richard Flohil at 416-351-1323 or email him at rflohil@sympatico.ca.

The Catbird Jazz Society is pleased to announce that the Mark Segger Sextet will be performing at George’s Roadhouse in Sackville, at 8 p.m. on November 16.  Although the “avant-chamber-jazz” sextet was formed in 2008 in Toronto, drummer/composer Mark Segger trained at Francis Xavier University in New Brunswick.

One of our sibling community radio stations, CKCU, residing on the campus of Carleton University in Ottawa, has almost completed its annual funding drive.  The station has had a great amount of community support, not just from its listeners, but from the mayor, the CBC, and a former show host and current drummer with Arcade Fire, i.e. Jeremy Gara, who advises that the band is hard at work on a follow-up to 2010’s The Suburbs.

Speaking of fundraisers, our own CHMR holds several, with some of them ongoing throughout the year, such as the candy sales you often see on the go in the Unicentre.  We have a current fundraising campaign selling necklaces made from semi-precious stones such as tiger eyes, amethyst, lapis, turquoise, pink quartz and agate.  They are only $20 each, and for an extra $1.50, they can be enclosed in coloured gift boxes.  Drop in to CHMR, one floor below the Unicentre food court, during business hours and speak to Kathy Rowe, our station manager.  Even better, sign up to host your own show while you are it!  Training is provided for a nominal fee.  I got conned into it seven years ago, at the age of 50, so if I can do it, why not you?  In other local fundraising news, here’s a heads-up regarding a benefit for the Janeway Children’s Hospital Music Therapy Program, scheduled to take place later this month.  The details are still being hammered out, so I’ll provide an update on that in a week or two.
