With all the elections going on these days you’d think that somebody out there would be able to talk some sense about public affairs. Luckily, this Sunday night, Oct. 19, I’ve got a feature act at my open stage who will help you make sense of the whole mess –Sebastian Agnello!

Seb, well known as one of Canada’s premier iconoclastic protest songwriters (and one heck of a great Country Rock guitar player) will do a set starting at around 10 pm at my 8 pm – 1am open stage at Gabby’s Bistro, 383 Eglinton Ave. E., three blocks east of Mount Pleasant Ave. in beautiful uptown T.O.

As always I’ll have a house guitar and 49-key polyphonic keyboard (with full size keys) available for performers who wish to use them. And between live action sets I’ll be spinning tracks by local and Canadian singer-songwriters and bands –the people that you actually know and love!

This week we have the gorgeous and fun-loving Cheyenne tending bar for us and serving on the patio out front, the other side of our cozy stage area in the window.

The club is cozy, food is quite fine and it’s easily accessible by TTC from Eglinton Station, where the Lawrence East, Eglinton East and Flemington Park buses all pass by (get off at the first stop east of Mount Pleasant) before heading north –and buses run 24 hours along this route!

It would be so appropriate to be able to imply that Mark "Bird" Stafford earned his nickname from his ability to soar on the harmonica in the fiery fashion of Charlie Parker. Sorry. Different "Bird". But - like Parker - Mark shares a phenomenal passion for making music and, as he's been performing since he was knee-high to a sharecropper, he's developed a musical voice that's become somewhat legendary in these parts - and beyond.. For good reason.

A serious student of "fat tone" harmonica, he subscribes to the teachings of the masters: Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter Jacobs, Big Walter Horton, Junior Wells and James Cotton, imbuing what he's learned with a healthy dose off his own creativity. He also injects these influences with the spirited new blood of cats including Kim Wilson, William Clarke and Rod Piazza. That's a serious stack of mentorship, but "The Bird" has listened and listened hard. And he plays back the lessons learned with all the love and respect befitting a forever blues student who is more than ready to register his own contribution to the genre.

From the frenzy he can generate from a crowd and on a dance floor to the smooth, mercurial side of his musical personality, Mark pours it on with a highly-polished singing voice and the comparably subtle, expressive tones of his accomplished harpmanship. Those who have been to Bird's church are the first to testify but never the last.

DR. CRAIG SLIMMON MEMORIAL BURSARY

LETTER FROM TANNIS SLIMMON

As you may have heard by now, my brother, Dr. Craig Slimmon, D.V.M., died suddenly on March 19, 2007. It was a tragic death, but we hope to remember and honour Craig through a memorial fund in his name.

Craig was first and foremost a lover of animals. He was also a talented practitioner of his profession, a passionate believer in the importance of rural veterinarians - for the community as well as the economy - a wonderful mentor for new vets, and a valuable colleague here in Canada, as well as in England and Africa.

His passing leaves not just a hole in the hearts of his friends and family but a gap in a profession that is strained almost to the breaking point across Western Canada. We have instituted a bursary fund at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in honour of Craig. We feel that this is a suitable way of both remembering him and taking up a challenge that he was so committed to in his life.

We hope you will join us in this campaign, both through your donations (see below) as well as by circulating this link to others you think may be able to help. We have parallel campaigns underway among professional colleagues, government agencies, foundations, large and small animal clients of his clinic, as well as others in the livestock industry.

Murray McLauchlan is a multiple Juno award winner and a member of the Order of Canada. He began performing in coffee houses around Toronto’s Yorkville area in the 1960s. Mclauchlan has released 18 albums, has had songs covered by the likes of Tom Rush, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings, he has hosted a weekly radio program on CBC, is an avid lover of aviation and is considered to be one of the most important figures in Canadian folk music.

Stephen Fearing released his debut recording over 20 years ago and has since earned a loyal following throughout North America and internationally. He has released eight solo recordings and is a member of roots, folk super group Blackie and The Rodeo Kings. The incredible quality of work produced over Stephen Fearing’s two decades plus career has earned him a West Coast Music Award for Best Folk Music Recording and a Juno Award in 2007 for his solo recording, Yellowjacket.

Catherine MacLellan is a Maritimes-based singer-songwriter whose music is steeped in the Canadian folk tradition and whose songs are hauntingly intimate and powerful. MacLellan has won six PEI Music Awards and earned multiple East Coast Music award nominations in 2006 and 2007. Her work is characteristic of the work of many of the singer/songwriters Catherine cites as influences and inspirations - artists such as Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffith, and Townes Van Zandt. Catherine’s new album, Church Bell Blues, was voted “Critics Favorite New Discoveries” in Canadian folk magazine Penguin Eggs.

Lynn Miles grew up in a musical home and has been a musical force since she was a baby. Her mother recalled once that she knew when Lynn had finally fallen asleep in her crib: Lynn stopped singing. Miles’ career has seen her move from Ottawa to Nashville to Los Angeles and back to Ottawa again. She won a Juno award in 2003 for her CD, Unravel, and a Canadian Folk Award for the CD, Love Sweet Love, in 2005. Appearing in Ottawa concert only.

Paul Quarrington is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, clarinet, squeeze box, bass, harp, and piano. He is also the author of the Governor General's Award-winning novel, Whale Music. Quarrington currently performs with the acclaimed blues-based group, Porkbelly Futures. Appearing in Toronto concert only.

TORONTO -- "Too much whiskey, too many cigarettes", reflects veteran Toronto bluesman Danny B. "It took me a lot to get this voice." That voice is instantly recognizable as the one that croons the familiar "You're on your way with Esso" jingle heard across the country.

"My claim to fame, and I'm so proud of this, is that I got paid union scale to burp", Danny says, laughing. "It was an Old Milwaukee commercial. It took a whole can of soda to get that nice wet burp happening." Soda? No free beer? "No, that happens after the gig", he says with mock-horror. "I'm a professional!"

A sort of bluesman of all trades, a harp-blowing bluesman of all shades who specializes in fronting small combos, he'll do what the gig requires, and, in keeping with the club's swing and jump blues image, he says he's rediscovered his love of Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima. Still, his harmonica is never far from his lips.

“On the Road to Memphis”
Ottawa Blues Society - Blues Challenge

Two rounds of Semi-Final competition for the Ottawa Blues Society’s “On the Road to Memphis – Blues Challenge” took place Wednesday, September 24, and Wednesday, October 1. Ottawa’s JW-Jones was MC for the event and six blues enthusiasts gave up an evening of their time to judge and choose the bands that would advance to the final event on Thursday, October 2, at Tucson’s.

Judges Bob Cabana (owner of Ottawa’s FabGear64), James Doran (organizer of the “Blues on the Rideau” series) and Todd Bernard (from DAWG-FM, Canada and North America’s first ever all-blues commercial radio expected to hit the airwaves by Summer 2009), for Semi-Final Round #1, and Alan Marsden (Director of the Ottawa Folklore Centre School of Music), Yves Trottier (DAWG-FM Program Director) and D.D. Rocker (Host of CKCU-FM’s ‘Iron Maidens’), for Semi-Final Round #2, had their own “blues challenge” choosing two finalists each night.

Advancing to the Final competition were Elyssa Mahoney & Lucas Haneman and Wicked Grin, and Phlegm and MonkeyJunk.

This local “Band” category competition is Ottawa’s first time participation in the prestigious Blues Foundation’s “International Blues Challenge” and looks to become an annual event. A $5.00 cover charge and impressive raffle draws raised nearly $2,500 to provide financial support for travel and accommodation expenses for the winning OBS representative. Thanks to the following sponsors who supported the event: Tucson’s, The Works, CD Warehouse, FabGear64, Folklore Centre, Lorenzo’s and Ken Fraser.

Performance order for the final, on Thursday, October 2, was drawn 90 minutes before the first band took the stage at 7 p.m. Phlegm kicked off the night with a rocking set; they were followed by the powerful voice of Elyssa Mahoney, combined with Lucas Haneman’s fiery guitar; Wicked Grin provided their trademark ‘Blues with Bite’ and MonkeyJunk ended the competition with down & dirty, timeless blues.

It was no easy task for Final Round Judges Fred Litwin (President of Northern Blues Music), Lynn Saxberg (Ottawa Citizen arts reporter) and Ed Torres (President of DAWG FM), who judged the four competitors using the same scoring criteria that will be used in Memphis in February.

When all the scores were tabulated, MonkeyJunk (Steve Marriner, Tony D and Matt Sobb) was chosen to represent Ottawa in Memphis, TN, February 2009, at the 25th International Blues Challenge. All participants joined in the jam session that followed and fans who attended are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

As one of the pioneers of alt-country/ roots music in Canada, Lori's music can be described as a mixture of: country, cowpunk, folk and bluegrass.

The Book of Minerva - her 6th CD - marks her triumphant return with a stellar collection of acoustic-based, old school country songs.

Born in Oshawa, Ontario, raised in the Toronto suburb of Downsview, Lori Yates is a "first generation mall babe", having spent her formative years running wild in the aisles of Yorkdale Mall. Her early influences were: Dolly Parton, Pink Floyd, Tanya Tucker and Suzi Quattro.

Lori began singing and writing at 19 in the punk/new wave band, The Last Resorts. They played legendary T.O. clubs: The Turning Point and Larry's Hideaway. A career highlight was opening for Teenage Head. Lori then formed Rang Tango. Considered one of the pioneers of alt-country/cowpunk in Canada, they came out of the fertile Queen West music scene of the mid '80s that gave birth to Blue Rodeo, Cowboy Junkies, and Handsome Ned.

Scooped up as a solo artist by Sony Nashville, Lori's Can't Stop the Girl was released worldwide in 1989. She toured with: Dwight Yoakum, Steve Earle, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Big Sugar.

Her first introduction to Nashville was a 2 a.m. demo session at Cowboy Jack Clement's studio, produced by Bob Johnston (Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline, Johnny Cash - Live at San Quentin). Marty Stuart played mandolin and Roy Husky Jr. played stand-up bass. Bob Johnston used Dylan demos to "tweak" the board.

In Nashville, Lori co-write with legendary writers: Don Schiltz, Guy Clark, Matraca Berg and Wendy Waldman. Lori recorded a duet in Los Angeles with Gregg Allman (Allman Bros.) for a Patrick Swayze movie ("Next of Kin") produced by David Kershenbaum (Tracy Chapman).

In 1993, Lori signed to VirginMusicCanada and released Breaking Point. Produced by Colin Linden and John Whynot and recorded at Bearsville, Woodstock NY., legendary Rick Danko (The Band) and Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) added harmony vocals.

She toured with Blue Rodeo, Jann Arden, Colin James and Faith Hill. Lori was nominated for a Juno and CCMA award. In 1996, she released her second VirginMusicCanada CD, Untogether, a complete artistic departure. She teamed up with trip-hop trio Opium Concepts to create an ethereal soundscape.

Returning to her roots, Hey Stella! was formed in 1998. Their debut CD, garnished them #1 band in NOW Magazine's readers poll. The band consists of veteran players: Bazil Donovan, David Baxter and Michelle Josef.

In 2001, Lori moved to Hamilton, Ontario, and took up a residency at the Corktown Tavern. This inspired a prolific period of songwriting that harkened in the newest chapter of Lori's musical career. She also plays with the trash/pop band The Evelyn Dicks.

She recently released her 6th CD, The Book of Minerva, on September 20, 2007, to rave reviews. She is currently organizing a full gigging schedule for late fall and winter, 2008.
