BRING ON THE BLUES WITH ROMI MAYES AT HAVEN SOCIAL CLUB

Friday the 13th is shaping up to be the hottest night in March on the Edmonton blues calendar. Canadian hellcat Romi Mayes brings her unique mix of bourbon infused country, blues, and bluegrass to the intimate confines of the Haven Social Club, the city’s newest live music venue.

Romi’s performance at the 2008 Edmonton Folk Festival introduced her rough edges to city blues buffs. Her two Western Canadian Music awards - songwriter and album of the year for her 2006 debut, Sweet Somethin Steady - gives you a hint of what to expect on the dirty-yet-polished sounds of her latest CD, Achin in Yer Bones.

For this project, Romi again worked with renowned producer Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Mary Gauthier) and together, they have created a masterpiece to thrill music lovers and musicians alike. Be the first to catch it on this special night at her Edmonton CD release party. Check her out at www.romimayes.com.

Warming up the crowd is Edmonton’s award-winning folk treasure, Chloe Albert. Named "Emerging Artist of the Year" by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Chloe’s rootsy style will capture your eyes, ears, and soul.

So grab a shot of whiskey, and be ready to check out some muddy blues and and sweet sounds from two rising stars in the Canadian roots scene.

The show happens Friday, March 13, at The Haven Social Club, 15120A Stony Plain Road, in Edmonton, AB. Doors at 7:30, show at 8.

Tickets available at Tix On The Square - www.tixonthesquare.com, (780) 420-1757, and at The Haven Social Club - www.thehavensocialclub.com, (780) 756-6010.

$12 in Advance, $15 at the Door, $8 for Students and Seniors.

“This is the sort of sound you’d want to hear pouring out of roadhouses as you drive up expecting to get drunk and maybe fall in love.” - Americana UK Magazine

The Boys of the Lough @ The Egg
to benefit the Irish American Heritage Museum

One of the finest bands in Celtic traditional music (New York Times) comes to The Egg in Albany, NY, on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 PM, for a rousing concert in honor of the Irish and St. Patrick to benefit the Irish American Heritage Museum educational programs and exhibit development.

Tickets for The Boys of the Lough are a $25 donation, with an Early Bird special of $22 before February 27. The Boys of the Lough

With forty years experience in the world of traditional music, 70 North American tours, 21 recordings and two Grammy nominations, Boys of the Lough has reached legendary status. The group features Cathal McConnell (County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland) on flute, whistles and vocals; Dave Richardson (Northumberland) on concertina, mandolin, button accordion and cittern; Brendan Begley (the Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry) on button accordion, melodeon and vocals; Garry O'Briain (Dublin) on guitar, piano and mandocello; and Kevin Henderson (Shetland Islands) on fiddle.

The Boys have established a reputation for technical brilliance and integrity combined with a ready wit and sense of fun. The music ranges widely through traditional melodies of Ireland and encompasses fiddle music of Shetland, Scotland and North America. Compelling dance rhythms, which give the music such life, will lift the audience to their feet; the evocative slow airs and beautifully structured songs "some in the Irish language" will have them coming back for more.

Acclaimed for their three decades of musical accomplishments by media the world over, the Boys of the Lough have played some of the most renowned music halls, including Carnegie Hall, The Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis where they appeared on The Prairie Home Companion, Wolf Trap in Virginia for the Washington DC crowd, the festival Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland, Belfast, the Irish Arts festival, and halls throughout Ireland, Europe, North America and Australia.

"The most rhythmically bracing of the traditional music bands." -Time Magazine

"...music that is full of guts and technical brilliance." - Irish Times

"...musically splendid legends." -Boston Globe

"Traditional heroe" played a moving set, putting people on their feet and making them dance the night away." - Irish World

"instrumentalists and singers [who] set the ¦crowd howling and dancing in the full fury of Gaelic tunes" - Rolling Stone Magazine

The Niagara Rhythm Section's unrehearsed Saturday night musical adventures, featuring really great guests you've probably never heard of...

This week:

SAT. FEB 28th - MARTY ALLEN & DAVE TUFFORD

Where:

The Anchorage, 186 Ricardo St. Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, 905-468-2141

When: every Saturday night 9:45ish - no cover

Here's what I know about Marty Allen. He's the real deal.

"Honky-tonk and Rockabilly music is as much about life as it is about music.

Southern Ontario artist Marty Allen, named after the late Marty Robbins, was born into a blue-collared middle class family and weaned on Sun Record artists Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. “It was a simple sound, yet energetic and commanding” states Allen who received his first guitar at the age of eight. Although not musicians themselves, his parents possessed a real love for music. “There was always music playing in the house and Sunday mornings we would hear the gospel music crackling from the hi-fi”.

After graduating “honky-tonk 101” Marty went on to form his own band playing the taverns and beer-joints. He has released four independent albums since then: Daybreak’s Coming (2000), Marty Allen (2001), Living Life (2002), Blue Church Road (2005) receiving airplay and performing various festivals.

In 2006 Marty joined up with Dave Tufford and Bill Culp of “Good Rockin’ Tonight” the Sun Record Story, to perform a tribute to Johnny Cash and has performed many theatres in Ontario including the prestigious Mississauga Living Arts Centre. Allen is currently working on new material for future release and can be found playing to fans and winning the unconverted over with his band the Cadillac Cowboys."

One of my oldest musical friends is multi-instrumentalist Conrad Kipping. From the late 70's onward we played hundreds of gigs together and actually the very first time I played in NOTL, it was as a duo with Conrad. Although he's been our guest at the Anchorage a couple of times several years ago, we rarely get to see each other much these days due to geographical logistics. Anyway, a long while back Conrad kept telling me about this amazing guitarist he met on a gig named Dave Tufford. He said I would love his playing. Years later I finally did get to hear him play when he and Conrad were part of Mary DeKeyser's Melody Ranch (playing every Saturday in Toronto at the Brunswick and later the Hard Rock) and Conrad was right. This guy's really great!

I've since had the pleasure of working with Dave a couple of times and he's even been our guest at the Anchorage once. I've always wanted to get him back. So this is really going to be a treat!

Hope you can join us for some real down home roots music.

Coming up...

Tues. April 14th - NRS will be performing at the Niagara Music Awards Ceremony
Niagara Centre for the Arts, Niagara Falls.

REV DEB'S "FARSIDE CHAT" - VOL. 1, NO. 1 - FEBRUARY 2009

First Ever!!!

Monthly Bulletin Healing Source

Welcome to the Nebula: So much exciting news, where to begin? How about welcome, friends, blues family and associates, to the first ever Rev Deb's "Farside Chat" newsletter, which I hope will become a welcome tool for health and transformation in our lives.

During my well deserved respite from the daily Blues grind at the WBS, I've been studying the latest literature on the nature of the universe. I've been honing my talents -- and getting amazing results -- in the healing arts. I am proud of mastering powerful tricks-of-the-trade developed by mystical healing artisans of bygone days. I've also completed advanced classes on leading edge "consciousness technology" presented by Matrix Energetics.

In addition to learning these very interesting techniques for promoting powerful change, I am also an ordained minister and want to remind you that my services are available for special ceremonies, including weddings and memorials. I would delight in creating a lovely spiritual ceremony brimming with peace and dignity, perfectly tailored for even the most notorious of low-down, blues musicians -- or their kin.

Still trying to find my niche, I'd like to create a stable healing practice bringing all this wonderful
information to the community in easy to digest bits. Won't you please consider sampling a little taste of this ancient/cutting-edge technology in an easy and comfortable setting? Like your place? Imagine inviting an intimate group of friends together for snacks and an entertaining but highly productive introduction to the fantastic healing world available to you and me. Very few remain unimpressed. Most individuals immediately experience tingling, warmth, and a nurturing state of calm. Many report relief from irritating chronic conditions, while others, spontaneous healing of new and old injuries in addition to long-term, subtle benefits to their feeling of well being and quality of life.

The mystical techniques I am working with have unlimited potential. Our session together could prove more valuable than you imagine, especially if you have been longing for tangible proof of your spiritual dimension. I am anxious to demonstrate, and anticipate hearing your version of the benefits you experience through our interaction. We can share it in the next Rev Deb's Farside Chat!

I'd like to introduce this new material to you in a small group, coffee/cocktail setting, but I am also available to meet in other settings. Sensible, reasonable pricing, truly wacky, amazing cures you never would have figured -- try something totally out-of-the-box -- get results! Learn to cope with your difficult issues using proven methods your momma never taught you. C'mon, it'll be fun.

Love to you,

Rev Deb

[Notes by David Brewer - http://www.myspace.com/davidbrewerblues]

It was the Bicentennial, Saturday night July 4th, 1976. We had a 3 night stand at “The Hayloft” in Vancouver Washington, a barn of a nightclub. It was a big place that held about 400 people. I
ask the guys who were running the board (Rose City Sound) if they would mind recording all 3 nights, and they agreed. So during the day I went down to Radio Shack and bought a stack of 8 track tapes, and it was on. At the end of the gig they turned the unmixed tapes over to me. When we got back to Seattle we went up to my friend’s studio to pick out a few tunes and mix them down. That was Bobby Lang’s “Star Trax”, then just a garage, but the beginning of an award-winning studio. After that, the tapes stayed in a box for 32 years.

On November 22, 2008, I took them out to my friend Ravens (Humphres) Black Wing studio to re-master them. Now I’m proud to let everybody hear them.

This recording was done shortly before Albert signed with Alligator, and he sounds great. I started touring with Albert early in 1974, first in the big blue Caddie with a U-Haul trailer behind, and later, Albert in his van and the band riding in Coco Montoya's (Albert’s drummer at the time) van. The first year I played with Albert I made $600.00 taxable income, after strings, whiskey, gas and food, and I was on stage 3 or 4 nights a week with the best blues guitarist that ever lived. I wouldn’t have changed a thing…

The players on this tape are:

Albert Collins (guitar/vocals)
David Brewer (guitar)
Darrell “Rabbit” Warren (Bass)
Kenneth”Boom” Gaspar (Hammond B-3)
Les Hutchinson (drums)

The tapes were restored by Don King and remastered by Raven Humphres of Black Wing Studios in Marysville, Washington. I hope you enjoy these tunes as much as I do…

BLUESMAN BILLY JONES - FEBRUARY 2009 NEWSLETTER

Hi, everybody.

Our European tour was a great success. The band had a wonderful experience at the Cognac Blues Passions Festival in France! I enjoyed listening to all the outstanding groups who performed at the festival, and getting to meet someof my idols like Willie King, Joan Baez and of course my all-time hero, Bobby Rush, and his beautiful wife.

We also met the chairman of the Hennessy Corporation and had a caviar and escargot "brunch" at the

Hennessy Castle while two butlers waited on us hand & foot. ...very impressive... weird, but impressive.

Then we got to perform for about 15,000 screaming French fans, sign a lot of cd's and autographs and

take a lot of pictures. I was humbled by the experience.

Please visit the Blues Passions website and check out the PDF pamplets to find out what happened at

this historic event.

Thanks,

Billy Jones

p.s... My band is mentioned in the 24 Juillet and the 25 Juillet issues of the "Nothing But the Blues"

CHRONIQUE DE COGNAC BLUES PASSIONS.
