About BIG BAM BOOM: May 30-31, 2009
Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY), winner of the 2007 Mayor’s Award for Youth Arts, presents Big Bam Boom, its first ever Youth Arts Festival in the York Quay Centre at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre from May 30-31, 2009. Produced and directed by the organization’s Youth Advisory Council, Big Bam Boom will showcase the outstanding creative talents of young people aged 12-24, who are current or past participants in AFCY’s arts educational programming, which runs in Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods. In a tribute to their communities, the youth will stage an hour-long performance of music, dance, drumming and dub-poetry in The Brigantine Room exclusively for AFCY community members. The public is invited to a stunning exhibition in The Marilyn Brewer Community Space throughout the weekend, where they can interact with the art and artists, including some of the professional artists who lead AFCY programs. The multi-disciplinary show will include visual art, sculpture, graffiti art, film, and intergenerational art-making. An interactive ‘art-in-progress’ will be donated to a community or social service agency chosen by the youth at the end of the festival. A highlight of the exhibition will be the magnificent sound installation, created from found and formed objects. Take advantage of this great opportunity to see, meet and create with AFCY’s talented young artists.
