Born in New York City, Kris Gruen is a Vermont-based singer-songwriter. Building off of the lush, whisper-folk of his 2006 debut album, Lullaby School (Mother West), Gruen’s sophomore release, Part of It All, adds innovative, eclectic, and electrified new approaches to the songs and production.

Often compared to Andrew Bird, The Arcade Fire, and The Decembrists, Part of It All, with the help of Mother West producers/engineers Charles Newman (The Magnetic Fields, AM, The Black Kids), JJ Beck and Rob Stevens, takes Gruen’s songs and stories to an adventurous and fresh musical place.

Kris is no stranger to the world of music. His father, the famed rock photographer Bob Gruen, has long been synonymous with immortalizing countless musical icons on film, but Kris has chosen to pursue a path more similar to the lives of those of his father’s subjects.

Recording in both New York City and Los Angeles enabled Gruen to collaborate and record with great musicians and friends, including drummer Butch Norton (The Eels, Lucinda Williams, Rufus Wainright), bassist Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing, Dixie Chicks), Nashville’s Jason Goforth on lapsteel, and drummer Nick Brown from New York City’s The Dig.

Survived by his sister, Iris Berryman, and her son, Donald Berryman, both of Hamilton, ON.

Winterfolk Festival Auditioning Artists in Southern Ontario Cities

There is no cost to audition to Winterfolk and two artists will be hired at each of the venues listed. Artist selection will be based on a combination of voting by the audience and the Winterfolk jury/representatives at each event. Artists will be encouraged to bring their fans friends to cheer them on. Winterfolk festival dates are Feb 18-21, 2011.

PATRICIA FRASER WINS ROBERT JOHNSTON "WORK IN CULTURE" AWARD

CCCO announces the recipient of the first Robert Johnston "Work in Culture" Award:

Patricia Fraser, Artistic Director of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre

Patricia Fraser, Artistic Director of the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, was named today as the inaugural winner of the Robert Johnston Award for exemplary Human Resources (HR) practices in the arts and culture sector. The award was created by Cultural Careers Council Ontario and is the first of its kind in Ontario’s arts and culture sector.

Fraser was nominated by Michael Jones, Arts Program Director at the Metcalf Foundation, who noted “there are very few individuals who, I feel, throughout their entire career have made such a deliberate and fruitful contribution to supporting the growth of our sector’s most valued resource: its people.”

CCCO’s selection jury echoed those comments: “Patricia Fraser is both an artist and an arts administrator who throughout her career has helped literally hundreds of people – from young dancers to dancers transitioning into other roles after performance careers. She is a model of excellent HR policy, both in her professional and personal lives.”

“Over the years, Fraser has searched out resources of all kinds to support … young artists – new graduate studies programs, inspired reading materials, mentors, advisors, collaborators, scholarships, awards and countless other incentives to personal and artistic growth”, explained Susan Macpherson, Artistic Associate, School of TDT, who wrote on behalf of Fraser’s nomination.

Patricia Fraser has had a long career as an artist, teacher, advisor, scholar and administrator. In addition to her position at School of TDT, she is pursuing her Master’s Degree in dance from York University and still carries on a performing career.

The Robert Johnston Award was established in honour of CCCO’s longstanding Executive Director, Robert Johnston, who retired in 2009, to honour those who demonstrate a tenacious commitment to furthering human resources development in the cultural sector. CCCO Executive Director Diane Davy noted, "Bob Johnston’s long career in the arts, at The National Ballet of Canada and at CCCO, has resulted in a heightened awareness of the importance of human resources management and professional development".

The award carries with it a cash recognition and a gift of appreciation. It was presented at a reception on Thursday evening at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. Johnston, who was a member of the selection jury, presented the award to Patricia Fraser. Other members of the jury included former CCCO board member Jenny Ginder, a consultant whose practice includes organizational development and government policy, and Marg Anne Morrison, Managing Director of the Organization of Book Publishers of Ontario.

BLOG ENTRY FROM WEBMISTRESS - THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 18/10

This just goes to show how ethereal the Internet really is and that there is NO replacement for hard-copy publications, i.e. newspapers, books, etc. (although Max Keeping and CJOH in general might disagree...).

After 10 years (2000-2010) of managing an arts & entertainment promotional website (x 3) hosted for free by Geocities, all of that work (CD reviews, music journals, etc., most of which was self-authored) got swallowed up by corporate greed.

After three years of maintaining my own Myspace website (yes, again, at no charge, but at no profit, either), the powers that be have decided to tweak its formatting/operating system (whatever) and bombard OUR spaces with non-musical advertising. It's a freakin' mess that I've abandoned out of sheer frustration/anger.

So that just leaves Blogger. Google, PLEASE tell me YOU will leave well enough alone! Otherwise, I will be left with no platform to promote my musical acquaintances except for my volunteer radio broadcasting endeavours (and I'm getting pretty tired of working for no pay/community recognition at that, too).

Maybe I should just get back to my womanuscript...where did that damn Selectric typewriter go? I'm pretty sure any day now my PC is going to die from burning off too many mp3's to play on-air.

The musical pedigree of Grammy Award winner James “Superharp” Cotton consists of a veritable who’s who in the world of the Blues.

Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006, the Smithsonian Institute in 1991, and winner of countless W.C. Handy Blues Awards, he has shared the stage with B.B. King, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Winter, the Allman Brothers, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Sam and Dave, and The Grateful Dead, among many others.

An orphan at the age of nine, he was raised in Mississippi by his mentor, Sonny Boy Williamson, who remains famous for his many unique songs and innovative Delta Blues harmonica style. As a young teenager, Cotton befriended Howlin’ Wolf and joined forces with him, playing Mississippi and Arkansas juke joints for two years. During that time Cotton hosted his own afternoon radio show in West Memphis, AR, and also recorded “Cotton Crop Blues” and three other songs on Sun Records in Memphis.

In 1954, when Muddy Waters needed a harmonica player, he found Cotton playing a club in Arkansas and took him to Chicago. Cotton remained with Waters for 12 years, not only playing shows but also recording with him on Chess Records. One of the highlights of that period came when Cotton arranged the ever-popular anthem for the blues, "Got My Mojo Workin’", which was played for the first time by the Muddy Waters Band at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1961.

In 1966 Cotton formed his James Cotton Blues Band, which continues to showcase his immense talent and keeps him one of the most sought-after, hard-driving, seminal blues musicians touring the world today. Cotton passionately explains,

"My audience always tells me how I’m doing. If I look out there and don’t like what I see, I work harder.” His audiences are still on their feet, they enjoy themselves as much as he does, and there continue to be standing ovations night after night.

DAVID ROTUNDO @ VIREE BLUES BOREALE - NOV. 17 - LE PETIT CHICAGO

After his remarquable performance during our 4th edition, it is with great pleasure that we welcome back this Great Canadian Bluesman at Virée Blues Boréale. With his charisma, his devotion and proximity, this internationally reknowned harmonica virtuoso made a strong impression at Virée Blues Boréale.


David Rotundo decided to buy his first harmonica right after he heard James Cotton perform at the El Mocambo. He then assembled his group, The Blue Canadians, and performed in the United States, from Chicago to Austin, through Memphis and New Orleans.

His CD, Blowing for Broke, won the "Best 2001 Blues Album " of the Canadian Independent Artists Association and also earned him a Maple Blues Award. The following year, in 2002, the Maple Blues Awards gave him the prize for "Best New Artist of The Year" and this same year, 2002, he was awarded the CBC/GALAXIE-RISING STAR. It is also the year when he started his tour of Russia, with performances from Vologograd to Moscow, all with great success.

Ever since, his exceptional mastery of the harmonica got him to regularly perform with the legendary Jack de Keyzer, with Ronnie Hawkins, and with the group of Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, former drummer of Muddy Waters, with Lee Oskar (of the legendary group War), with Madagascar Slim, Mel Brown, Jeff Healey, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Finis Tasby, Magic Slim and The Tear Drops, Elvis Costello, Shakura S’Aida and most notably with his all time idol, James Cotton.

The David Rotundo Band, as presented by Virée Blues Boréale, got underway in 2003. After much fan demand, in late 2007, David recorded and released his live album, Live at Roc'n Docs, which captured the true essence of the band’s high energy live performance. In 2008 it was considered in the top 20 blues albums released that year by various community radio stations with blues format shows.

As a songwriter who easily pulls inspiration from the world around him that fuels his continual writing, Rotundo choose 12 new original songs to grace his fourth album, No Looking Back, which again featured Enrico Crivellaro on guitar as well as Jeff Healey’s keyboardist, Dave Murphy. It was released in March 2009 to overwhelming response from fans both new and old, as well as the music industry itself.

Bobby Dupont started at the original Bluenote Club at Yonge and Gerrard in the late '60s as lead singer of The Stattlers. This engagement at the number 1 night spot in the city was very successful. Upon leaving the club, Bobby went out on the circuit and began carving a distinctive name for himself as a well-known Toronto r&b singer. He formed a new band in the early '70s with well-known west end vocalist Donny Meeker, and the very popular group, Sweet Blindness, was born.

Later, with American guitar/vocalist Curtis Lee at his side, Bobby crafted up some amazing trailblazing Canadian r&b records such as "National Party" and "Cowboys to Girls". He recorded many other great r&b originals and covers with the band. Bobby quickly became known as Canada's white Stevie Wonder. Sweet Blindness recorded two very well received chart albums and they continued pumping out great soul music until 1977.

Riding a wave of continued success, Bobby teamed up with former lead singer of the famous The Mandala, George Olliver, and in 1978 they formed the acclaimed Righteous Bros. duet-style band, The Royals. Under Bobby's business direction (another one of his many talents) they fast became the no.1 niteclub band in the GTA.

Domenic Troiano (prominent guitarist for The Mandala and ace record producer) soon got wind of this formidable liaison and promptly engineered a signing to Freedom Records. TORONTO BLUES SOCIETY ANNOUNCES MAPLE BLUES AWARD NOMINEES

October 28, 2010 (Toronto) – Internationally recognized Canadian Blues artists will be getting plenty of attention at the 14th Annual Maple Blues Awards on January 17, 2011. This year’s crops of nominees are not only recognized at home, but have been leading Canada's growing international reputation as a leader in the blues community. Voting opens Friday, October 29 at midnight Newfoundland time & closes Saturday, December 11 at midnight PST. Blues fans cast their votes online at www.mapleblues.ca.

Leading the nomination is Toronto’s Downchild with six, Ottawa’s Monkey Junk, who were awarded the 2009 Best New Artist Debut at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, TN, follow with five. Toronto based singer Shakura S’Aida and Fathead each have four nominations. The first Canadian to win The International Blues Challenge award, New Brunswick’s blues giant Matt Andersen, garnered two nominations.

The 2011 Maple Blues Awards are taking place at Koerner Hall on January 17th, wrapping up the bi-annual Blues Summit Five, a music conference which is a not-to-be-missed forum for all blues music industry members, artists, presenters, and agents.

Now in its 25th year, The Toronto Blues Society is a non profit membership organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Blues. The Maple Blues Awards is Canada’s national blues awards program. Its goal is to promote blues music across Canada, and to recognize outstanding achievement in the field.

"ROCKIN' THE BLUES FROM CANADA" - JOURNAL ENTRY - OCT. 25/10

Well, my particular funding drive show at CKCU 93.1 FM is now over and done with (phew)!

I won't pretend it was a successful endeavour on my part, but I wasn't really expecting it to be. History has shown me that volunteer efforts to promote music and other kinds of arts just don't carry the same weight as volunteering to raise cancer research funds or providing practical assistance (e.g. chauffeur services) to elderly or disabled people. And I don't disagree with that.

I mean, really, who cares if community/campus radio stations stop broadcasting because of the lack of community funding? There are hundreds of other stations that will "entertain" listeners for free with a repetitive rotation of the latest (or stalest) musical flavour of the week, as long as you can stomach the plethora of commercial advertising that goes along with it. And for some strange reason, the general public doesn't seem to mind being bombarded with commercials, as long as they know they are part of a large crowd (baaa, baaa). Just don't complain about these corporations getting richer and richer because you've been sucked into buying products you don't need or that don't work properly. And, musicians, don't complain that your music is not getting any exposure if you are not willing to pay for publicity, even as a tax exemption.

Enough said - I will continue to "play DJ" without pay or acknowledgement because I love to do it, period.

The much-expected return of a pioneer at Virée Blues Boreale’s 12th edition

A participant in the very first show of Virée Blues Boreale in 2005, Steve Rowe (with The Ramblers), really won over all of Virée Blues Boreale’s audiences on both of his visits, given the depth of his compositions where Classic Blues cleverly mixes with today’s «Power Blues», pure Blues with a foot on the international doorstep.

For this occasion, the prolific Canadian Blues composer and performer will be accompanied by a distinguished guest - Brian Cober - the creator of the much impressive “double slide” guitar technique. For sure, this technique has been copied, but its creator’s mastery has yet to be matched.

Virée Blues Boreale presents the meeting of '50s Chicago Blues and '60s English Blues with Steve Rowe and his guest, Brian Cober (of The Nationals, a long-running mainstay at Grossman's Tavern in Toronto) on Wednesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. at Le Petit Chicago in Gatineau, QC (just across the bridge from Ottawa, ON).

A master of the Blues guitar, Steve Rowe acquired a solid reputation as a guitarist with a unique sound. Freely translated, Randy Renaud of Montreal’s CHOM FM 97,7 says: "Steve is distinctly in the Blues guitarists’ tradition, a professional who is only satisfied with his songs and each note that he delivers perfectly."

Presented as a "Guitar Hero" by The Montreal Gazette and by the Voir newspaper, his reputation spreads beyond our continent’s frontiers. In 2000, Driving the Blues Away was selected for Best CD by Mr. Big Al Watts, an authority with the «Brisbane Blues Society" of Australia and Front Rowe Center was acclaimed by Belgian, Norwegian and German critics.

Steve’s soundtracks for movies and TV series such as the highly popular Prank Patrol on YTV, Homerun on the CBC or Teddy Bear and Seven Days movies earned him nominations and awards throughout his career. He was brilliant through all of his performances, namely those at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, at Festiblues, at Sutton en Blues, at Blues de Tremblant, at Virée Blues Boreale, as well as in his premieres and collaborations with legends like Bryan Lee, Colin James, Smokey Wilson, Hubert Summlin and Buddy Guy.

A summary of the last 25 years of this virtuoso guitarist’s career proves the value of his global performance. With his long-time associate Alec McElcheran on bass, Steve Rowe and his guest, Brian Cober, will have le Petit Chicago rocking with their integral Blues, Blues of the '50s sounds, jazz and Swing Bop Shuffle.

An Instrument for Every Child (AIFEC) is a visionary music project aimed at providing Hamilton, Ontario’s elementary school children with the opportunity to learn to play an instrument.

The program is modeled on a similar initiative offered in Germany and is based on ‘El Sistema’, a music program which has dramatically changed the life trajectory of hundreds of thousands of children in Venezuela, 90 percent of them from poor socio-economic backgrounds.

Through AIFEC, students in grades 1-4 will learn to play a musical instrument and receive general music education within the school curriculum.

AIFEC was launched as a pilot project in Hamilton, Ontario, at King George Elementary School in September 2010.

The longer-term vision for the program is that ALL children in Hamilton will have the opportunity to be part of AIFEC.

We believe in our city’s mandate of making Hamilton the best place to raise a child!

"ROCKIN' THE BLUES FROM CANADA" SEEKS FUNDING PLEDGES FOR CKCU

CKCU 93.1 FM is about to celebrate its 35th anniversary!

Its annual funding drive begins on October 22 and runs through to November 7, 2010.

"Rockin' the Blues from Canada" will air its sole funding drive show on Monday, Oct. 25, from 2-7 a.m. (Sunday, from 11 p.m. to Monday, 4 p.m. on the West Coast), featuring special in-studio guests and call-ins. If you, as a musician, have received airplay on this show, now beginning its second year, please consider making a donation, however small. A First Show on the Quebec Side for “The Greene Machine” at the 12th edition of Virées Blues Boréale.

Discovered by Virées Blues Boréale during the finals of the “On The Road to Memphis” competition, sponsored by the Ottawa Blues Society, in 2009 where we were judging, this young group from the Ottawa region came out a solid first in this competition; that sent them as the region’s selection at the 26th edition of the famous “Memphis International Blues Competition” in the “Group” category. They defeated 111 other groups and were selected at the Hard Rock Cafe. They were the only Canadian group to reach the finals at the legendary Orpheum Theatre.

Always on the look-out for Blues sensations, Virée Blues Boréale presents, for the first time in Quebec, the Jesse Greene Band. Probably one of the youngest veterans of the Blues scene in this region, Jessamyn, alias Jesse Greene, at only 26, has a killer-technique on the guitar and an impressive experience list with her former much acclaimed group, an afro-world beat-jokko style, as well as with the legendary canadian Bluesman, Tony D. She travelled the region to spot the best Blues, Jazz and Rock musicians and made them into the Jesse Greene Band, starring Luke Donovan on guitar, Marc Seguin on harmonica, Dan Grewal on bass, Jason Coté on drums and, for sure, the guitarist-composer with a Soul voice that Lynn Saxberg from the Ottawa Citizen proclaimed the new Blues sensation, Jessamyn Greene.

Right back from their highly succesful trip to Memphis, the Jesse Greene Band began producing their first album. The result is a new sound, but familiar at the same time, enriched with a powerful mix of contemporary, R&B, Rock and Jazz shots in out-of-time original compositions, in the purest Blues tradition. This album, launched last January, has already earned some very positive reviews from famous art critics, like the Ottawa Citizen’s Lynn Saxberg, D.D. Rocker of CKCU and the CBC’s Amanda Putz. Now YOU can come and discover this new group already at the top of the Blues charts.

LUCAS HANEMAN WINS CNIB'S 2010 "I FACTOR" COMPETITION

Lucas Haneman said his goal wasn’t winning the top prize, but learning as much as he could from the celebrity judges. Lucas was one of ten lucky finalists in CNIB’s The i Factor musical competition and was named the winner at the finale. The top ten were given the unique opportunity to travel to CNIB’s Lake Joseph Centre for a week of intensive training that included instruction in vocals and stage presence, in preparation for the finale on August 7, 2010.

Blind since birth, and playing as well as performing since age 6, Lucas has always possessed a natural talent for the guitar. Originally focusing on styles like folk and blues, he began delving into genres such as jazz and original alternative rock as a teenager. Lucas had the chance to perform in many national jazz bands and received a CBC Galaxie Rising Stars Award in 2005 at the Ottawa International Jazz festival.

Since then he has focused on creating and performing original music with vocalist Elyssa Mahoney, with whom he received an Ontario Independent Music Award in 2008 for their song "How to Dance." Now an accomplished musician in many genres, Lucas has attended Concordia University where he received the prestigious Oscar Peterson jazz scholarship, and recently completed a Bachelors of Fine Arts with great distinction and a Jazz Studies specialization.

Well liked by both the audience and his fellow contestants, Lucas’ passion, natural talent and stage presence made him the audience favourite.

"We’re proud of him and thrilled for his success,” says CNIB’s President and CEO John Rafferty, “He is a gifted guitarist and a perfect example of what we want to showcase: great talent, perseverance and spirit all in the presence of vision loss.”

The August 7 finale was the culmination of several days of preparation and training for the contestants. Judge Farley Flex gave his time to mentor all the contestants and Terry Kelly also shared his wisdom. It was a life changing weekend for everyone involved.

A special thanks goes out to the amazing emcee Mike Bullard for hosting the evening and to Shirley Eikhard, Terry Kelly and Farley Flex for judging the event.

COLDSWEAT DRUMMER DAVID YASUZAWA DIES WHILE ON THE KIT

David Yasuzawa, one of the first drummers that played for Toronto band Coldsweat, passed away suddenly while playing drums with John Dickie's band at Grossman's on August 14, 2010. He was 61.

There is a memorial this Sunday (September 12) in Toronto.

Years ago, Dave and Coldsweat guitarist Rob Anthony Tarticcio were preparing to record with Hock Walsh of Downchild just prior to that gentleman's untimely demise.

GILLES ROGER WANTS TO RAISE $1 MILLION FOR CANADIAN MILITARY

Montreal-born and now Ottawa-based RCMP officer and ex-soldier Gilles Roger has embarked on a musical fundraising project, entitled "Half Mast Again". All proceeds from the sale of his single, "Half Mast Again", and other songs he has composed, that will also be included on his upcoming CD, Road to Recovery, will be donated to the Military Family Resource Centre in Petawawa, ON. He hopes to raise $1 million for the effort.

To date, he has been interviewed at both Live 88.5 FM and CKCU 93.1 FM, two Ottawa radio stations, and in August 2010, he performed at SuperEx.
