GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT

I’d like to start off by congratulating Susan Knight on her recent appointment as Chancellor here at Memorial University.  She is the first woman to hold that position at MUN, so that’s fairly exciting news, particularly for those of the female persuasion.

Composer, recording artist and live performer Catherine MacLellan is currently on tour promoting her latest CD, Silhouette.  She had dates in Halifax, Fredericton and Moncton these past few days, but alas didn’t make the extra-long leap across the ocean to us.  She’ll begin the Western leg of the tour in Winnipeg before moving on to Saskatchewan and Alberta.  I had the pleasure of seeing her perform live at the Ottawa Folk Festival last summer and was very impressed by her songwriting talent and professionalism.

Speaking of Ottawa folk musicians, internationally renowned folk music icon and multiple award-winner Valdy, born in the nation’s capital, and now based on Salt Spring Island, BC, will be taking the stage tonight at The Pearl Company Theatre in Hamilton, ON.  Tickets are an extremely reasonable $25.

You may have missed Catherine MacLellan, but Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac, collectively known as Madison Violet, will be performing in Halifax and Lunenburg, NS, next month.  They are very serious performers, as well, so don’t be surprised if they demand your respectful attention.  It’s obviously not about the money, where they are concerned.  They will be at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto next month, too, before heading off to Europe.  Their latest CD is called The Good in Goodbye, but I personally prefer No Fool for Trying.

In West Coast music news, a strangely-named Vancouver blues duo, The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, have started a campaign on indiegogo.com called “Help the Blues”.  The musical renegades have teamed up with Music Maker Relief Foundation to raise funds for impoverished musicians over the age of 55, who may or may not also require medical treatment.  The Foundation’s foremost mission is to preserve and promote the musical traditions of the American South, mostly notably, the blues.  For more info, visit indiegogo.com/helptheblues and musicmaker.org.

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – SEPT. 29/12

Juno award-winning guitarist Jack de Keyzer is getting set to release an all-new original studio recording of blues-rock music entitled Electric Love.  It’s scheduled to be launched in late October, early November.

High-profile Toronto musicians probably owe a great deal of their success to long-time Toronto music promoter Gary17 as they do to the recently-deceased Sam the Record Man.  Gary17 was the original owner and publisher of the legendary t.o. nite magazine and is the current publisher of Toronto Moon.  He may not be savviest of businessmen, but he has consistently poured his whole heart and soul (not to mention his own wallet) into the task of sharing his keen ear for musical talent, whether they be live performers or recording artists, as well.  Because of his persistence in helping others achieve fame and glory, to his own detriment, he has once again fallen on hard times and needs more subscribers to Toronto Moon to help him get back on his feet.  If you’re based in the Greater Toronto Area and are serious about your musical career, it’s a worthwhile and very inexpensive investment.  As well, having worked as a reporter for him myself, I know he gives back 200% to his loyal supporters.  For more info on getting your own career kickstarted, you can email him at therealgary17@gmail.com.

Speaking of promoting local musicians, St. John’s Chris Kirby, who opened for 8 Ball Aitken at Distortion last week, has been nominated for five MusicNL awards for his brilliant Wonderizer release, which also features Juno award-winner “Southside” Steve Marriner of Ottawa.  Nashville-based 8 Ball, a country music award-nominee in his native Australia, struck me as being a mix of John Lee Hooker, Arlo Guthrie, John Mellencamp, and John Fogerty all rolled into one.  And that glorious mane of long red hair – oh, my!  Next week, I’ll be featuring tracks from his Alive in Tamworth CD, now available at Fred’s Records, so I hope you can tune in for that.  You can also pick up a copy of Wonderizer at Fred’s.  Check out musicnl.ca for a complete list of the nominees.

Also coming up are the Maple Blues Awards in Toronto, as well as East Coast Music Week 2013, taking place from March 6-10 in Moncton, NB.

One last musical coda, musician Mike McDonald, not to be confused with the international comic of the same name, has started a Sunday singer-songwriter evening at The Levee on George Street.  I had a chance to check it out a couple of weeks ago, as it was slated to run from 7-11 p.m.  It started a wee bit later than that, but it’s a no-nonsense, well-run event, that included six or seven performers, with only a few minutes’ break in between sets.  I only just wish The Levee would provide some coffee instead of just booze for refreshment, as the event is geared more towards listening rather than loud partying.  Rowdy Blues it ain’t, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be, other than a Monday morning hangover.

Great Big Rock Jam Report: 

Here’s a great little story from Canadian musician Orit Shimoni, a.k.a. Little Birdie.  Two missionaries walked into the bar where she had a gig.  She had just finished her set but they asked if she would play a few more for them, as they'd seen her from their hotel window and came in to hear the music.  She scanned her brain for her 'religious' songs (while thinking of about 30 songs she shouldn't play in order to avoid starting a major discussion with them).  She then played what she thought were a few acceptable tunes.  They smiled and nodded, and then one of them asked, 'Do you do any blues?'   Upon leaving, they said, "Thank you for your ministry."

The Town of Sackville, NB, and the Tantramarsh Blues Society will be presenting a live performance by Toronto-based Queen of Sass Ms. Shakura S’Aida, a Canadian blueswoman, born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Switzerland.  Shakura is on tour to promote her new double CD entitled Time.  This particular gig takes place next Saturday, September 22, at the Bridge Street Fall Fair Tent in Sackville.  The show is free and starts at 9 p.m.

Rita Chiarelli is hanging out these days at the Toronto International Film Festival, where her documentary “Music from the Big House” L.A. publicists, RMH Media, by name, are representing the film, “Caught in the Web”, by award-winning Chinese director Chen Kaige.  Rita, who’s pitching an idea for a film, as well, is scheduled to perform at Hugh’s Room in Toronto next Saturday, Sept. 22.

Another Canadian blues femme, Sunday Wilde (with an ‘e’ at the end of Wilde), has raised almost $1,500 at Indiegogo.com in pre-sale orders and financial assistance towards the production of her upcoming CD.  Check it out.  It’s bound to be a brilliant release.

D.D.’s Blue Notes

If you’re planning on releasing a CD anytime in the near future, you might want to consider sketching a picture of yourself and using that for the cover art.  Using an image that depicts anything or anyone else without providing compensation could now be construed as copyright infringement and litigated as such.  I hope I didn’t just speak any syllables that belong to someone else – a penny for your thoughts?  That being said, apparently the Royal Mint is backing down on its plan to charge Nova Scotia musician Dave Gunning for the depiction of the one-cent coin on his CD cover art.

Chris White, volunteer coordinator and community outreach coordinator from 2011-2012 with CKCU 93.1 FM in Ottawa, received the Helen Verger Award at this year’s Ottawa Folk Festival.  Chris co-founded the festival in 1993 and was its artistic director for 16 years.  Helen was the co-owner and operator of the legendary and much-loved Rasputin’s Café in our nation’s capital, along with her son, Dean Verger, also with CKCU.  The venue sustained major damage in a suspected case of arson a number of years ago and never re-opened.  The Vergers have roots in Newfoundland and Labrador.

British Columbia punk-rocker and long-time activist Joe Keithley of D.O.A. has thrown his Mohawk into the political ring, seeking to win the NDP vote in his riding of Coquitlam-Burke Mountain.  “Shithead”, as he was known by in musical circles, spoke to a crowd last fall in Confederation Park during the Occupy Ottawa movement.  Oh, and the band recently released a new CD called We Come in Peace.  I had a chance to meet him personally at a gig at Mavericks and found him quite charming.

Rising Star Promotions is proud to announce that ADAM TUCK will be the Special Guest at the 8 BALL AITKEN show at the S.S. MEIGLE show, in Seal Cove, Conception Bay South (CBS, for those of you listening in from Australia, where 8 Ball hails from).  Chris Kirby, whose music I’m going to play shortly after I stop babbling, will be opening for 8 Ball at Distortion on George Street on September 20.  That party’s gonna be a double humdinger!

I’d like to wish an early happy birthday to Shelley Hardinge, a.k.a. Hip Shakin’ Mama.  She’ll be turning 23 tomorrow.  Right, Shelley?  Oh, wait - it’s Jimmy Bowskill who is turning 23 then.  I can’t believe a decade has already passed since I first heard him belting out the blues in Dunnville, ON.

Born in Marseilles (France) in 1978, Gaëlle Solal began the guitar at age of 6 with René Bartoli.  At 14, she won three gold medals at the Conservatoire de Marseilles and as the best student of all instruments, was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Marseille. Afterward she studied with Alberto Ponce at Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, Roberto Aussel at Musikhochscule Köln (Germany) and Alvaro Pierri at Université du Québec à Montréal (Canada). She participated in many master classes with legendary guitarist such as: Pepe Romero, Antigoni Goni, Roland Dyens, Oscar Ghiglia, Leo Brouwer, Alvaro Pierri and Joaquin Clerch. She played big amount of concerts, and also got many prizes on international competitions. Some of them are: 1st Grand Prix at Alessandria Competition, 1st Prize in Locquémeau, 1st Prize in Savona, 1st Prize in Sernancehle, Finalist at Concert Artists Guild New York, Honor Diplom at Accademia Chigiana and 2nd Prize at Guitar Foundation of America.

She has performed in Festival d'Ile de France, Noches en los Reales Alcázares in Sevilla, Festival d'Avignon, Festival Montpellier-Radio France and at Salle Cortot (Paris), Zellerbach Hall (Berkeley), Tsuda Hall, Nikkei Hall, Oji Hall in Tokyo, Merkin Concert Hall (NY). She recorded for NHK, France Musiques, RFI, and RAI.

Gaëlle played with the Berkeley Symphony, the Garde Républicaine Orchestra and the Philharmonic Turin Orchestra. She toured in more than 30 countries including Germany, Myanmar, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Israel, Spain, France, Gabon, India, Iceland, Italy, Laos, Malaysia, Morocco, Mexico, Palestine, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Serbia, Switzerland, Tunisia, US.

Great Big Rock Jam Report 

First of all, I’d like to welcome back the student body for a new year at MUN.  If any of you are looking for something to occupy yourself during those long stretches of time in between classes, why not check out the radio station on your very own campus, located on the second floor of the University Centre, directly below the food court.  As a student, you can get free training on the sound board, and before you know it, you may find yourself hosting your own on-air show, broadcasting locally at 93.5 on your FM radio or streaming live around the world at mun.ca/chmr.  Any member of the public is welcome to train for a show, as well, at a nominal cost.

On Wed., Sept. 19, at 8 PM, there will be an OXFAM fundraiser at the LSPU Hall Resource Centre for the Arts (a.k.a. RCA).  Oxfam, an organization proclaiming that “ending global poverty begins with women's rights”, has only five regional offices in Canada, one of which is here in St. John’s.

Stony Plain Records is set to release Maria Muldaur’s 40^th, yes, you heard right, 40^th album.  It’s a tribute to blues pioneer Memphis Minnie, and along with Maria Muldaur, features recordings from special guests Bonnie Raitt, Rory Block, Phoebe Snow, Koko Taylor, and male artists Del Rey, David Bromberg and Alvin Youngblood, etc.  The CD is called First Came Memphis Minnie, a blueswoman who recorded more than 200 songs between 1929 and 1949.  It will be released internationally on October 9.  Maria will be starting a promotional tour with her Red Hot Bluesiana Band later this month, and so far there are five Canadian dates scheduled, all in beautiful British Columbia.

While checking out Darrell Cooper’s Sunday Night Acoustic Blues session last week at the cozy Bull and Barrel, next to Distortion and CBTGs, I was treated to a couple of tunes from Suzanne Power of The Salty Dolls and The Bedlam Beggars bands.  The woman certainly has more than enough vocal power, as witnessed by her renditions of Etta James’ “Rather Go Blind” and Big Bill Broonzy’s “Rock Me, Baby” that night.  Speaking of The Salty Dolls, which also includes Gillian Hynes and various side players, they had an early-evening gig at The Rose and Thistle on Water Street last night.

American blueswoman Debbie Davies, who recently released a CD entitled After the Fall, will be performing live on October 11 in the Allegro Room of the Comfort Hotel on Market Street in Halifax, NS.  For more info on that, visit eastcoastbluessociety.com.

Here’s a reminder that blues guitarist, composer, vocalist, recording artist and former MusicNL President and now Executive Director Denis Parker is booked to open for Ontario slideguy (as in slide guitarist) Rick Fines at the LSPU Hall on September 27!  I know it’s a terrible thing to admit publicly, but it doesn’t hurt at all to show mainland Canada that there is a solid core of blues music-lovers in NL.  It is, after all, just country music without the twang.

The versatile Linda Jaine Band, which offers a variety of blues, rock, soul, r&b, etc., is comprised of Linda Jaine on vocals, Cullam Bruce-Lockhart on keys & vocals, Jack Daw on bass, Scott Mansfield on drums and vocals, and local jazz wizard Kirk Newhook on guitar.  They’re at the Fat Cat tonight.  Thank you to Noozly.com for that info.

The deadline to apply for the International Songwriting Competition (ISC, for short) is September 20, so get your submissions in.  The judges for this year include Tom Waits, Jeff Beck, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, John Mayall, James Cotton, Alligator Records’ Bruce Iglauer, etc.  Considering all of these folks have lengthy and, for the most part, blues-based musical backgrounds, you might want to take that into consideration when submitting your own stuff.  Nas and Tegan and Sarah are also on board, for those of you under the age of 50.

In Canada, well, Toronto, to be specific, the 19^th Annual NorthbyNortheast Arts Festival is calling for entries by musicians, filmmakers, and comics (more commonly known as comedians).  Submissions will be accepted – online only – at nxne.com until January 31, 2013.  There are links on that website to submit music, films, or comedy video/audio files to NXNE. Submissions received by December 31 cost $28 — after December 31, the fee rises to $38.

The 14^th Annual Port Credit Blues and Jazz Festival, also known as Tim Horton’s Southside Shuffle, in Port Credit, Ontario, west of Toronto, is in full swing as of yesterday, but it was kick-started by an advance dinner & concert on Thursday, entitled Beggars Blues Banquet, hosted by The Johnny Max Band.  Also included on that bill were performances by Downchild vocalist and solo artist Chuck Jackson, Derek Holts of the UK, Dexter Allen from the States, and Joe Murphy of Nova Scotia.  This three-day music marathon featuring a titanic amount of top-tier Canadian blues musicians – Mark “Bird” Stafford, Jack de Keyzer, Michael Pickett, and Jimmy Bowskill – just to name a few, would satisfy even the great Muddy Waters.

I’ve never heard tell of a blues cruise either going out from or coming into St. John’s Harbour, but the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise #19 leaving San Juan, Puerto Rico, in October and travelling to Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique and Dominica, will include live performances by Canada’s own Matt Anderson, alongside heavyweights like Taj Mahal, Tedeschi-Trucks Band, Ana Popovic, Ruthie Foster, WIRED, Tommy Castro, Lil Ed and the Imperials, Mitch Woods, Bobby Rush, James Harmon, and Buckwheat Zydeco, rounding out the musical spectrum.  Seattle trombonist Randy Oxford states “There is nothing like this Blues Cruise in the world.  Life Changing – I guarantee it.”  The January 2013 cruise is sold out, and advance tickets are already being for next October at bluescruise.com.

In local blues news, CHMR’s Terry Parsons, long-time host of “Cosmic Debris”, “Blind Lemon Blues”, “Sunday Morning Hangover Cure”, and “The Songwriters” has arranged to bring Aussie bluesman 8 Ball Aitken to St. John’s and outlying areas for a couple of live performances.  So far, there are three gigs scheduled, and the door charge is a mere $10 for each of them.   The first takes place on Thursday, September 20, at Distortion on George Street, with St. John’s Chris Kirby being the special guest artist.  Tickets are just $10 and go on sale this Monday, September 3, 2012.   They are available at Fred's Records, DISTORTION, or at the door on the night of the show (if the club can fit you in).

The second show takes place Friday, September 21, at S.S. MEIGLE in Seal Cove.  Advance tickets for this show are now available at the S.S. MEIGLE or at the door on the night of the show.

The following night, Saturday, September 22, 8 Ball will be playing at Jay Jay’s in Whitbourne.  Those $10 tickets are available at the Jay Jay's as of September 3 or when you show up for the performance.

Great Big Rock Jam Report:

Blueswoman Shelly Hardinge of Hip-Shakin’ Mama and the Leg Men recently had the honour of having one of her ample mammary glands autographed by blues great Charlie Musselwhite.  I guess there wasn’t any paper handy.  I wouldn’t want to be her husband if that was a permanent marker being used on the makeshift canvas…

As mentioned in the preceding show, “Iron Maidens” now follows “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada” rather than preceding it, in order to allow me an extra hour of sleep after a hard week of the old 9-5 routine.  I also mentioned during that show that Canadian ukulele player James Hill, along with his fiancée and long-time music partner, noted East Coast cellist Anne Janelle Davison, will be featured by Borealis Records in a free streaming of a live concert performed in Toronto last year.  You can check it out tomorrow and Monday evening, at 8 PM EST, at borealisrecords.com.

Toronto’s Blues Element is planning to record its third CD at Rogue Studios in Toronto, with James Paul as their recordist, as he prefers to refer to himself.  Blues Element co-songwriter and lead vocalist Jamie Browning simply refers to him as "amazing".

The deadline to submit applications for the MusicNL Week Showcase is September 10, 2012, at 4:30 p.m.  The showcase criteria is as follows:

• Must be a paid-up member of MusicNL.
• Must have been a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador for the past year.
• Repertoire must include at least one original song (previously unreleased).
• A showcase evaluation committee will jury the submissions. 

Application must include:

• Stage plot
• Two-three-song demo or commercially-released CD (mp3's only)
• Photo of artist or group (jpg's only)
• 100-word biography of artist or group (I’m not sure if that is an exact amount)

Greater Toronto Area soul-blues-rocker Anthony Gomes, now based in St. Louis, Missouri, had a nasty experience earlier this week in Illinois, while driving his tour van, which suddenly caught on fire.  He lost a lot of gear, his music library, and most of his clothing. Fortunately he was able to save his guitars and sustained no bodily injuries.

Here in St. John’s, blues guitarist and vocalist Darrell Cooper has transferred his Acoustic Sunday Night Blues gig to the Bull and Barrel on George Street.  Unfortunately, this one doesn’t start any earlier than the previous one at the Fat Cat, but if you’re nocturnal AND you don’t have to work Monday mornings, this will suit you to a “T”.  Showtime is 11 p.m.-ish ’til everyone gets the boot.  Speaking of Darrell Cooper, I had the pleasure of interviewing him and Darrin “Boobie” Browne, another St. John’s guitarist, back in 2005, right here at CHMR when I was hosting “Patchwork Blues”.  I’ve since resurrected the recording, which includes three live blues tunes from the dynamic duo, which I’ll be playing on “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada” next Saturday, September 1st, just after 9 AM.

Blueswoman Sunday Wilde of Atikokan, ON, is hard at work on her third CD, following her very popular, “What Man??  Oh, THAT Man!!” release.  She recently posted a live performance video of one of the songs from the upcoming disc, which I liked a lot, so I’m looking forward to hearing the entire recording.

West Coast band Sabrina Weeks and Swing Cat Bounce is gearing up for the “Bouncing the Boogie Blues Tour”, including dates at The Standeasy in Kingston,  the Southside Shuffle music festival in Port Credit, Ontario, Irene’s Pub in Ottawa, the Lavigne Pub in Lavigne (near North Bay) and the Monarch Pub in Toronto.

Ottawa’s Soma Simone and Jeckyl Hyde, now based in Toronto, are working on a new duet recording, entitled “Khroma Key”, which is being produced by Stuart Smith.

“Newfoundland Dreamgirls – A Tribute to Motown” is now on at the Masonic Temple on Cathedral Street in St. John’s.  Last Tuesday’s dinner and live musical show was sold out, but it’s on again this Tuesday, as well as on selected Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays right into November.  The star performers are Janet Cull, Dana Parsons, and Kelly-Ann Evans, all of Red Dress Entertainment, and they are backed by a full band, comprised of Bill Brennan, Sandy Morris, Scott Mansfield, and Mark Peddle.  Peter Halley, the artistic director, also co-wrote the musical with Kelly-Ann Evans.

It’s going to be a bouncing good time when recent Maple Blues Award recipient’s Sabrina Weeks and Swing Cat Bounce roll into Ontario for their eastern Canadian Bouncing the Boogie Blues Tour.  The band has been named the best new blues act in Canada for 2012 after winning the prestigious title of best new artist / group at the 2012 Maple Blues Awards.

Sabrina Weeks & Swing Cat Bounce is an act that needs to be seen.  Offering up a generous helping of the Swinging Bouncing Boogie Blues is what Sabrina Weeks & Swing Cat Bounce do.  The show is dynamic, the players are exceptional, and the grooves drive until you’re swingin’, bouncin’ and getting’ your boogie on.  The songs are lighthearted with a twist of naughty, the melodies are infectious, and it is abundantly apparent when watching this group that they truly love what they are doing.   Hailing from British Columbia, Canada, this group collectively makes up over 100 years of musical expertise.  The band members include Sabrina Weeks, Mike Hilliard, Ed Hilliard, Bill White, and Ken Sell.

In 2010, Sabrina Weeks & Swing Cat Bounce released its debut CD, Tales from Lenny’s Diner.  The CD debuted at #1 in Canada, #12 globally on the Roots Music Report Blues Music charts, peaking at #6 on the global blues charts in March 2011. Further, the CD made the top 100 RMR list for most radio plays globally for 2011.  Tales from Lenny’s Diner has been rated in the top 100 new CDs released in 2010/2011 according to the Real Blues “Top of the Charts” report and voted as the #1 CD released for 2010 by CFBX and best new artist for 2010 by the Blues Underground.  Also, their song “Bad Boys” charted at #2 on BB Kings Bluesville for March '11.  More, Sabrina Weeks & Swing Cat Bounce have been nominated by BCIMA for the “Blues Album of the Year” Award in 2011.  Last but not least, Sabrina Weeks will be featured as one of the headliners for the prestigious Women in Blues Review being held at Massey Hall in Toronto in November.

D.D.’s Blue Notes

I’ve got to say that, since moving back to St. John’s at the end of April, I’ve been missing all of the matinee music shows that take place on the weekends in Ottawa, historically renowned for being very blues-friendly.  If you happen to be planning a trip to Canada’s capital, I recommend you check out the Atomic Rooster, The Rainbow Bistro, or Irene’s Pub, all of whom host live Saturday afternoon blues music, with the Rooster and the Rainbow also hosting Sunday blues matinees, as well.  My favourite gig to attend was at Irene’s, though, on Thursday evenings, when members of Heaven’s Radio host a weekly blues night, with special guest players, such as JW-Jones, Terry Gillespie (himself a co-founder of Heaven’s Radio), and Tony D, Steve Marriner, and/or Matt Sobb, of the hugely successful blues trio known as MonkeyJunk.

Speaking of The Rainbow, Jack de Keyzer, double Juno award-winning jazz-blues guitarist and producer for dozens of musicians, including The Blazers and Tracy K, will be playing there on Friday, August 24.  I know that Jack has toured in the Maritimes, but I’m not sure if he has ever made it to The Rock.  I first knew him as a rockabilly guitarist with The Bopcats, and he has also played with Robert Gordon, a somewhat famous rockabilly dude himself, but, like the late Jeff Healey, De Keyzer’s true love is jazz music.  In the meantime, he’s got a number of blues festival dates lined up right into autumn, before heading over to Europe in November.

Festival by the Marsh and Tantramarsh Blues Society are presenting Garrett Mason (son of Dutch) and the Keith Hallet Band tonight at 8 PM at George’s Roadhouse in Sackville, NB.  It’s an early show since Garrett also has a gig at the Dutch Mason Blues Festival, now on in Truro, NS, which brings us to the East Coast Blues Society in Halifax.  They have a recently revamped website at eastcoastblues.ca.

I’ve been trying to start some sort of informal blues music “conspiracy” here in St. John’s for about a month, but so far have been met with complete indifference, apart from one local jazz musician I never heard back from after his initial query.  Ah, well, as Janis Joplin once sang, “I Guess I Got-ta Try…Just a Little Bit Harder”.  If anyone is interested, the barebones website is at nlbluessociety.blogspot.com.

In current and upcoming events in St. John’s:

The Tuckamore Festival – Chamber Music in Newfoundland – is currently celebrating its 12^th season, and continues until August 19.  There are two performances by young artists tonight at Petro Canada Hall, one at 7 p.m., featuring original composers, and the other at 8 p.m., with players performing classical pieces in chamber music and solo repertoire.  Included in the line-up of upcoming performances next week is Montreal-based Janina Fialkowska, who will be performing pieces by Schubert and Chopin on piano on Wed., Aug. 15, at 8 p.m., at DF Cook Recital Hall. 

The Craft Council Gallery, at 59 Duckworth St., is now celebrating its 40^th year of operation, and today is the last day you can glimpse a display of work from across the province.  Beginning on August 25, the Craft Council Gallery, and its Annex Gallery, will be featuring the quilt work of Heidi Wagner, the hooked rugs of Sarah Feltham, and mixed-media sculptures by Nicole Russell-Pitcher. 

If you are into some outdoor fun, Le Centre Scolaire et Communautaire  des Grands-Vents at 65 Ridge Road, is having its BBQ Feast of Acadia tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 12, from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m.
