~ONE AM RADIO~ is the musical project of Hrishikesh Hirway, a composer and songwriter from Los Angeles. The One AM Radio's sound is often characterized by Hrishikesh's lush, soothing vocals over dream-like instrumental arrangements. He does most of his own recording, playing several of the instruments and producing all the beats; the style borders electronica, folk, post rock, chamber music, and ambient music. Live, he is joined by a changing line-up of accompanists.

Born in Massachusetts, Hrishikesh began The One AM Radio while a student at Yale University, where he studied art and film. Despite their sound, The One AM Radio has often played shows and released records within the DIY, hardcore punk scene. Hirway's family is from India, and in 2005, Hrishikesh moved to Mumbai to work on his music. He returned to Los Angeles in 2006, and released his third studio album, This Too Will Pass, in early 2007.

Pontiac's autumn 2006 television commercial features The One AM Radio song "What You Gave Away (alias Remix)," from the album On The Shore Of The Wide World. ~ Wikipedia

LYMBYC SYSTYM

Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, Jared and Michael Bell formed Lymbyc Systym late in 2001. Drawing inspiration from the groups Tortoise, My Bloody Valentine and Four Tet, their compositions cleverly combine vintage keyboards, infectious melodies, analog effects, dynamic drumming, and intricate laptop programming to form melodic and cohesive tracks that blur the borders between post-rock, indie-rock, and folktronica. As the opening act for the Album Leaf, Mice Parade, and a slew of other national acts, the brothers have developed a truly impressive live show. From their self-release debut EP, Carved by Glaciers, to the current music for LymbMush Records,Lymbyc Systym have quickly carved out a place in the bustling underground music scene.

MONTAG

Born in Gaspé, Québec, and raised in the icy Kuujuak in Québecs north and Montréal, Montag is regarded as one of Canada's most distinctive electronic musicians. Montag is celebrated among music aficionados for his sophisticated compositions, mixing analog, electronic and acoustic instruments into rich soundscapes and melodies. He earned international acclaim for 2005s Alone, Not Alone (Carpark Records/Gooom Disques, France). In an enthusiastic nod to the albums dip into nostalgia, Pitchfork Media noted, [Montags] droll lyrics and gorgeous, slightly icy melodies expand upon the traditions of the '60s French pop icons while honoring them, as he emotes with precision, restraint, and a sardonic eye."

Montag has shared bills with indie greats such as Broadcast, Lali Puna, Feist, Stars,Xiu Xiu, The Russian Futurists, Ulrich Schnauss, Ghislain Poirier, Hood and The Organ . He has performed at numerous international music festivals including Pop Montreal, Mutek, Montreal Electronic Groove (Montréal), SXSW (Austin, TX), Canadian Music Week (Toronto) and Sonorama (Guadalajara, Mexico) . Recent side-projects include remixes for Canadian friends Stars, Québécois legend Jean-Pierre Ferland and the American indie rock group Snowden; a sound commission by French CBC scoring poetry by author Kim Doré; a music composition part of "The Hearing Eye", and a multi-disciplinary video/sound project for Gallerie Clark in Montréal.

STEVE MCKAY BAND (Put On Your Drinking Cap Records)

SARAH GOOD
$8, 9pm

United Steel Workers of Montreal return to Pepper Jack's for another extraordinary night of foot-stomping "Citygrass". Voted "Best Bar Band" in the Montreal Mirror, USMW are still riding high in support of their much praised second album, Kerosene and Coal. The six-piece band takes off from varied influences, giving Kerosene & Coal their own unique sound. Gern f.'s gritty voice trades off growls and whispers, providing a boisterous counterpart to Shawn 'Gus' Beauchamp's earnest, emotionally raw vocals on songs such as "Ask Me To Stay" and "Union Man". But it's Felicity Hamer who delivers the knockout punch, revealing the emotional power of the Steel Workers as she turns a sultry rasp into a satin-smooth drawl. Gern and Gus have perfected their two-guitar attack, while Matt Watson's soulful telecaster roots you to the speaker. Roger Dawson's stand-up bass provides deft backing and Kevin McNeilly plays banjo and mandolin with feverish intensity.

THE RIDERLESS
DJ SOLID OAK

Loka evolved from studio experiments between Mark Kyriacou and Karl Webb back in 1999. The duo signed to the Ninja Tune label a year later and their first track 'My life's in these bottles' appeared on Ninja Tune's 'Xen Cuts' Compilation. The single 'Beginningless' Followed and in 2006 Loka released their debut Album 'Fire Shepherds' to rave reviews. Gigs and a radio session for Giles Peterson's Radio 1 show followed as well as a Live performance at the Colchester signals film festival and headlining the jazz night at the Liverpool Music week. Loka also took on remixing duties, on Blockhead's seminal track 'Sunday Séance' turning it into a breathtaking 6 minutes of a full on live jazz drum orchestrated epic
Loka has now grown from the duo that started out in 1999 into an eight piece live monster. The Line up now includes: Guitar – Karl Webb, Keyboards and electronics – Mark Kyriacou, Keyboards – Catherine Norman, Bass Guitar – Tom Sumnall, Drums – Ged Hawksworth, Percussion – James Pagella, Tenor/soprano saxophones and flute – Ray Dickarty and Trumpet – Rory Gordziejko

ALEX CUBA(Juno Winner/Best World Album 2006)

JARET KOOP
http://www.jaretkoopmusic.com/
$8

ALEX CUBA is a Cuban-born multi-instrumentalist who now makes his home in Canada. He is kept busy pushing sophisticated Cuban sounds into the mainstream. From his earliest years in Artemisa, a town about 60 km from Havana, he was immersed in music. Alex's first stage appearance on national TV was at the tender age of four, playing claves (a percussion instrument) in a group directed by his music instructor father. Alex went on to study guitar, tres, percussion and bass, practicing eight hours a day during his teens.

AlexCuba has performed for festivals in the US and Canada, sharing the stage with Seu George and Jose Gonzalez at Central Park Summer Stage in New York to Feist at the Regina Folk Festival. He has opened for The Blind Boys of Alabama, Cesaria Evora and Ron Sexsmith.

New for Alex is the electric guitar a vintage Gibson that brings a trademark sound equal to his magnetic appearance. His latest album, Agua Del Pozo, showcases Alex Cuba as a singer/songwriter who is continuing along a path he first struck out on bridging his Cuban roots so evident in his song writing with his musicianship reflecting the jazz he studied with elements of funk and early rock.
