“Sometimes you just want to do things yourself.” – Arlo Guthrie
ARLO GUTHRIE
Solo Reunion Tour – Together at Last
Saturday, October 27, 2007, at 8:00 pm
Tickets $69.50 - $39.50
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Toronto, ON (September 28/07)
Legendary '60s icon Arlo Guthrie, who galvanized a whole generation’s counter-culture activism and social consciousness with his epic anti-war song, “Alice’s Restaurant”, performs a rare solo concert on Saturday, October 27, 2007, 8:00 pm., at Massey Hall in Toronto.
For well over four decades, the veteran folksinger/composer has toured the world, gathering a wide following for his distinctive and endearing style of singing and storytelling. Arlo says, “It’s coming up to 50 years of life on the road and I’d love to have a chance to do it like I did with nothing but a couple of guitars and a harmonica.” His current solo tour takes him to 84 cities across the United States and Canada.
In 1961, a young Arlo Guthrie took to the stage for the first time … solo. During the summer of 1965 he performed in England, Scotland and Denmark, showing up at clubs or singing on street corners … alone! In November that same year he began work on what would become his signature work, Alice’s Restaurant. For the next two years, he continued to tour as a solo artist as far away as Japan. In 1967, Alice’s Restaurant was released and was an immediate hit.
In 1969, Arlo Guthrie appeared at the Woodstock Music Festival, starred in the motion picture, Alice’s Restaurant, married Jackie Hyde (Miss Malibu), and bought an old farm in Massachusetts. Since then, he has rarely toured alone; one exception was in 1993, when longing for the good old days, he took his pick-up truck on a one-man tour for a few weeks.
In 1983, alongside his thriving performance career, Arlo launched his own record label, Rising Son Records, which holds his complete catalogue. His latest album, In Times Like These (2007), is a dynamic work in which he collaborates with the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. Of his double CD Live in Sydney (2005), it was said: “The real treasure is Guthrie himself…while staking out his own idiosyncratic territory, he both preserves and furthers the folk tradition.” – Acoustic Guitar
Arlo’s diverse artistic endeavors have included acting roles on the ABC series, Byrds of Paradise, and the USA Network series, Renegade. He has written and published a popular newsletter, “The Rolling Blunder Review”, and is the author of an award-winning children's book, Mooses Come Walking. He is actively working on two screenplays, one based on his father’s book, Seeds of Man. In 2002, he bought “The Church” (immortalized in “Alice’s Restaurant”), which houses The Guthrie Center, a not-for-profit interfaith church foundation, and The Guthrie Foundation, an educational foundation dedicated to providing a wide range of local and international services. Programs include everything from an HD Walk-A-Thon to raise awareness and money for a cure for Huntington's Disease (the disease that killed his father, folksinger Woody Guthrie), to baking cookies with a local service organization.
For the past year, Arlo has toured with his children because the spirit of the Guthrie Family has been handed down from generation to generation and “it was just plain fun”. The First Family of Folk has a legacy: “It's in the songs, the humour, and the commitment to keep making the world a little better for everyone”, says Arlo.
"Guthrie is philosophical in a naturally funny and folksy way and, as with great storytellers such as Will Rogers and even his own father, he always manages to pluck a gem from a lot of dirt." - The Los Angeles Times

Jerome Godboo’s previous releases (Déjà Vu, Live in Tel Aviv 2002, Pain and Glory) have addressed details of his personal relationships in an honest, if negative manner, but Humdinger centers itself on the roundly positive influences now shaping his life.
The fun begins with a whimsical entry entitled, “Beans”, which is introduced by the lyrics, “‘Zydeco’ means ‘haricot’ and ‘haricot’ means ‘beans’, so pass the salt, you gorgeous Cajun queen”. While the music sounds more like swing-jazz than Zydeco, it was inspired by Jane Hayes’ Bean Keepers, a children’s story about growing rare beans.
Never one to focus on blowing his own horn (so to speak), he includes in his liner notes “The Family Side Show”, which gives us personal glimpses into their world of gardening and holistic nutrition as they relate to the sustainability of a healthy life. Another side project, “Cirque D’irt”, naturally incorporates a musical component to its purpose of “dancing through paradise and living on the circus edge”.
“Xmas Storm” details a drive through hazardous road conditions on a trip to visit his daughter, Jessie, now residing in the Greater Ottawa area, while the title track is a lively boogie-shuffle homage, ostensibly to Jane.
“Eye on You”, previously recorded on Live in Tel Aviv 2002 and a favourite in his live performances, is a sassy strutter that is bass and guitar-driven offset with Jerome’s trademark vocal calisthenics. Long-time collaborator Alec Fraser expertly provides his signature bass and production prowess on the CD, while Shawn Kellerman forges an equally strong alliance fingering the treble clef. Renowned drummer Al Cross is always right on the mark, displaying the all-important enthusiasm without being overbearing.
Upping the tempo even more is “Janey Jane”, a raucous blend of Zydeco and rockabilly, with Jerome’s harmonica aptly replacing the typical accordion.
“Wounded Healer” is a slow blues about needing protection and fearing abandonment, showcasing Kellerman’s dynamic talent, alternately tender and then downright blistering.
“Dogman” follows that intense musical reverie with a fast-paced, raunchy cow-punk rocker featuring scorching slide guitar and James Cotton-like harmonica trade-offs that are further enhanced on “Mother”, appearing later in the CD. I’m not sure if the lyrics are about taking risks, but that’s how I interpret “Jerome, you’re too young to die; you can’t even afford your funeral; think about your wife and child; think about me, you silly fool”. This is my favourite fast track, hands down.
The musical rollercoaster takes an enjoyable dip with “Stinky Gardener”, a mid-tempo shufflin’ sway about an unappreciative boss taking the glory for his worker’s hard labour.
“Don’t Cry, Baby” is a relaxed rumba shuffle with lyrical pleading for reconciliation.
“Mother” is a crawl-paced, harmonica-weeping, guitar-wailing conversation about death. At first, I thought he was referring to a near-fatal maternal relationship of a more personal kind. I then realized the cancer-stricken mother was more likely mother earth, and the issue being the gradual but inevitable destruction of her “womb” (i.e. our planet). Hopefully it’s not a combination of the two scenarios. Although it’s almost seven minutes in length, it’s beautifully performed and a thought-provoking, if vaguely depressing musical opus.
“Rock to Build a House On” is classic Godboo, both musically and vocally – a rollickin’ shuffle about maintaining a strong foundation for harmonious family life. Other than at the coda, Jerome graciously steps back to allow his sidemen to shine.
“Deep Sea Diver” (mystic rider) is a memorable closer – a laid-back tempo with a funky bass-driven groove with cascading blues-rock guitar riffs and harmonica that create an unusual musical version of an animated fantasy-adventure film short.
I admit I didn’t hear anything wildly different on Humdinger, historically speaking, but that’s not to say this release is without passion. Jerome is well-known and respected for his flamboyant vocal and musical style, and his sidemen are always impeccable. I would even suggest this recording is the one he is most comfortable with to date, as it seems to reflect a meaningful purpose in his chosen career and personal life. For something that is completely different, check out the Brokenjoe trio project, Long Walk to Nowhere, which is comprised of Joe Toole, Jerome Godboo and Alec Fraser.

MIKE ROTH REVISITS NEIL
Four decades following his departure from Canada, Neil Young’s ties to his homeland remain quite visible. Borrowed Tunes Two, a two-CD musical tribute to Young, produced by Mike Roth of Big Bold Sun Music, is being released Oct. 16, the same day Young releases Chrome Dreams II, followed by an 8-week North American tour that sees him returning to Massey Hall in Toronto on Nov. 26-27.
Distributed by Universal Music in Canada, Borrowed Tunes Two features Canadian artists performing their favourite Neil Young song. Selected tracks will be featured on Sirius Canada’s Iceberg channel 95.
The first Borrowed Tunes was a two-CD, 36-track album in 1994, co-produced by Roth and Gary Furniss. It raised over $200,000 for charity and included such Canadian acts as Jann Arden, the Waltons, Colin Linden, Crash Vegas, Junkhouse, Randy Bachman, and Art Bergman.
Borrowed Tunes Two, like its predecessor, graphically shows that, as well as being a great singer and guitarist, Young is also one of rock’s most important composers. He's written a phenomenal number of perfect songs and even his lesser songs have an unmistakably magical quality. While the album captures the plaintiveness and haunting emotionality of Young’s music, it also stands on it own: an obvious perspective of his music from a new generation of original Canadian acts (see track listing below).
Says Roth, the former head of A& R for Sony Music Canada, “When I was in grade 8 my mother (who was a teacher at Lawrence Park Collegiate) brought home an LP of a student who had attended Lawrence Park very briefly before leaving to make a career in music. She seemed to think he was a genius. I gave it a quick listen and told her I didn't like his voice and went back to my Beatles’ records. One day I picked it up again and I haven't stopped listening since. To say it changed my life would be an understatement. The LP was After the Goldrush by Neil Young. Making Borrowed Tunes in 1994 and now Making Borrowed Tunes Two have been great experiences for me. Seeing how Neil's music has touched so many great Canadian artists has been astonishing. As well, his songs have stood the test of time and have become part of the Canadian landscape.”
Profits of Borrowed Tunes Two are being donated to the Bridge School, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and the Safehaven Project for Community Living in Toronto.
Soon after his birth in November 1978, Neil and Pegi Young's son, Ben, was diagnosed as having cerebral palsy. For the couple, it was an appalling coincidence; Neil's oldest song, Zeke, from an earlier relationship, had been born with a mild form of cerebral palsy. The Bridge School was founded in 1986 by Pegi, and Jim Forderer, another parent of a child with severe speech and physical impairments, and Dr. Marilyn Buzolich.
The Safehaven Project for Community Living provides respite and day programs for Ontario children and young adults facing severe physical, mental and health challenges. The parent-run charitable organization operates four residential homes and one respite care home.

PAUL ANKA--#2 WRITTEN ALL OVER HIM
Paul Anka's latest album, Classic Songs: My Way, on Decca Records, debuted at #2 on the Canadian album chart according to AC Nielsen Soundscan data. It wasn't enough to beat out the High School Musical 2 soundtrack which, with a mere 31 more copies sold, remains at #1 for a fourth consecutive week.
Anka’s five-decade career is a remarkable story in which he transformed himself from being a '50s teen idol into a superb vocal musician recognized around the world, and one of most successful pop songwriters in history.
Anka has recorded 126 albums to date and sold close to 15 million albums worldwide. Among his Billboard chart statistics are three #1 songs - "Diana"; "Lonely Boy"; and "You're Having My Baby", as well as 22 Top 20 hits. Anka has a staggering 900 original songs to his credit--130 recorded by other artists including Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, and Robbie Williams. He is particularly well-known for penning signature songs for others, notably "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" (Buddy Holly), "She's a Lady" (Tom Jones), "Puppy Love" (Donny Osmond) and, of course, "My Way" (Frank Sinatra).
Anka has been the discoverer of artists you wouldn’t expect to be even on his radar. He boosted the careers of Canadians Michael Buble, and David Clayton-Thomas, of course, but he also discovered, and brought to U.S. labels, American singer/songwriters John Prine and Steve Goodman. Anka also discovered Corey Hart at age 16, funding his first singles for United Artists.
In the summer of 1956, when Anka was 14, his parents allowed him to travel by himself to Los Angeles to visit his uncle Maurice. Anka began working at the Civic Playhouse selling candy bars during intermission. Every day he would leaf through the telephone book calling record companies, asking them to listen to a song he had written with his uncle. He was turned down by all of them. One day at Wallach's Music City, at the corner of Sunset and Vine, Anka was listening in the store's booths to “Stranded in the Jungle” by the Cadets. He noticed on the record label that Modern Records had offices in nearby Culver City. The Modern label was formed in 1945 in Los Angeles by Saul and Jules Bihari. The label recorded R&B, country & western, jazz, popular, blues, and gospel. The subsidiary label RPM was formed in 1950 and released blues, jazz, R&B and rock & roll. Modern/RPM was highly successful in the late '40s and early '50s, with such blues performers as B.B. King, Roscoe Gordon, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins, Jimmy Witherspoon, and John Lee Hooker, and in the rock & roll field, with the vocal groups the Cadets, Marvin and Johnny, the Jacks, and the Teen Queens, and such singers as Jesse Belvin, Etta James, Richard Berry, and Shirley Gunter.
Anka convinced his uncle to drive him to Modern. The label's A&R head, Ernie Freeman, a veteran of Los Angeles' jazz scene, then listened to his song, "Blau-Wile Deveest Fontaine", inspired by the African village in John Buchan's novel Prestor John (which Anka had studied in high school), and signed Anka as the only white act in the company. "Blau-Wile Deveest Fontaine" was released on RPM in 1956. Uptempo with a slight Middle Eastern feel and arrangement, it was an oddity in contrast to the simple and conservative true love songs of the mid-'50s.
“The back-up singers on the record were the Cadets; I could not believe what was happening to me”, recalls Anka. Despite pioneering R&B disc jockey George "Hound Dog" Lorenz trying to break it in Buffalo, the record stiffed. However, Anka did get to appear nationally on CBC-TV's Pick the Stars and Cross-Canada Hit Parade. The track surfaced in 1959 on the Riveria Records budget album, The Fabulous Paul Anka - Paul Anka and Others.
At 16, Anka went to New York City, carrying with him "Diana," a song written about his crush on an older high school friend. He stayed with the Rover Boys - sleeping in the bathtub of their suite at the President Hotel -and eventually he met with Don Costa, then handling A&R at ABC-Paramount Records.
"A disc jockey in Toronto sent ABC a lead sheet on 'Diana'", recalled Costa in 1975. "There wasn't even a demo with it. I read it over - and it looked interesting. So we sent for a demo. Paul was so crazy that when we sent for the demo he came down from Ottawa. He floated around the city waiting for an appointment, and one day we sat down and played a bunch of his songs.”
Costa was so impressed that he called in other label executives. They all agreed Anka had talent. Within the week, Paul’s father arrived to sign a recording contract on his son's behalf.
ANKA, CHUCK & RAY
As a teenager, whenever a rock and roll show came through Ottawa, Anka was there trying to get backstage to meet his idols. This included a rock n' roll revue at the Ottawa Coliseum in the mid-50s featuring Fats Domino, the Platters, Chuck Berry, and Clyde McPhatter. It was at that show that Berry, after watching an Ottawa fan, was inspired to write "Sweet Little Sixteen.”
In 1962, trying to reach a broader audience, Anka left ABC-Paramount and signed with RCA Victor. In leaving ABC-Paramount, Anka purchased his masters and publishing—an unheard-of feat in those days. It set him back $250, 000.
“That was all I had in the bank”, recalls Anka. “But I felt strong about my future.”
Soon afterwards, ABC-Paramount offered Ray Charles a contract with an increased artist royalty, a producer's royalty, his own label named Tangerine, plus the rights to his recordings that would revert to him when he left the label.
“Ray was a buddy and I told him, 'If you are going to ABC, get your masters'”, recalls Anka. “He took a shot and he got them as well.”
QUICK TAKES
In an evening at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on October 15, entitled, "A Gift of Music: from Tradition to Tomorrow”, several of St. Michael’s Choir Schools’ illustrious graduates will show their dedication to their beloved alma mater. Matt Dusk, John McDermott, Stewart Goodyear, Michael Burgess and Kevin Hearn, with members of the Barenaked Ladies will be joined both by the Canada Pops Orchestra and the 250 voices of the St. Michael’s Choir School choristers.
Montreal-based singer Corneille has signed a U.S. deal with Motown Records, which will release his album, The Birth of Cornelius, in early 2008.
“I never thought that this dream would ever come true”, says Corneille. “This proves that you should always believe in your wildest dreams.”
The documentary film, Pete Seeger: The Power of Song, hit theaters in the U.S. this week. With archival footage and personal films made by Seeger and his wife, this authorized biography, directed by Jim Brown, chronicles the life of the legendary artist and political activist who was banned from U.S. television for over 17 years. Uptown Goes Downtown Tonight
Rita Chiarelli (http://www.ritachiarelli.com/) has been called the “Goddess of the Blues” by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers.
Magic happens when roots/blues diva Rita Chiarelli joins forces with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra http://www.tbso.ca/ is the only professional orchestra located between Toronto and Winnipeg and is one of Ontario’s best kept secrets! Together they make beautiful music and they’re going to record it.
Building on a highly successful cabaret show last season featuring Rita Chiarelli with the TBSO, the recording of Uptown Goes Downtown Tonight will include 11 of Chiarelli’s songs. Arranger Joe Phillips has charted Rita’s songs for the symphony and producer Keith Horner will fly up to Thunder Bay from Toronto to oversee the production of the album. Rita’s three-octave voice will be highlighted, but you’ve never heard her with a back-up band like this one!
Following three days of recording at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium (TBCA), Rita Chiarelli and the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra will perform in concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, at the TBCA. The evening will include the songs from the album and an additional classical repertoire chosen by resident conductor Jason Caslor, who will be wielding the baton throughout this project.
For more information or to arrange a media interview with Rita, contact Liz Harvey-Foulds, By the Bay Productions, 807-886-9910 or lizharvey@tbaytel.net.
Rita’s interview with Jeff Goodes on CBC’s Fresh Air and one of the songs (a version recorded during rehearsal) can be heard on Rita’s website.
Tickets are available for the concert by calling the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium 1-800-684-4444 or visiting their website http://www.tbca.com/. To order an advance copy of the CD, visit Rita’s on-line store or call the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra office at 807-474-2284 .

Guitarist, band-leader and musician Jeff Healey, despite his ongoing battle against the cancer gene that stems from retino blastoma - the disease that took his sight in early childhood - is continuing to work on a variety of projects.
Currently in the middle of a course of chemotherapy, he is working on two different recording projects - one a jazz recording for Stony Plain Records, the other a blues CD for Stony Plain and for Ruf Records in Germany. He is also continuing his Monday evening radio show, "My Kinda Jazz", on JazzFM in Toronto.
"I have had to repeat one earlier show, and I'm taping some shows this week, but I'm doing the show live whenever I can, because I much prefer to do it that way," he said.
A handful of concert dates have been postponed, and Healey was sad to miss a Scandinavian tour, which would have lasted too long to allow his ongoing treatments.
"I have great confidence in the doctors who are working with me", Healey says. "I'm doing everything I can to keep busy while my doctors and I fight the good fight. Keeping my various projects on the go is as important to my health as are the treatments."

Sackville Fall Fair and TBS (Tantramarsh Blues Society) Present Cuban-born, Toronto-based Carlos Del Junco and his band on Saturday, September 22, at 9 PM, in the Bridge Street Tent, Downtown Sackville, NB - ADMISSION IS FREE!
Also Playing:
New Brunswick’s bluegrass masters Caledonia Drive (David Lewis, Ron Girouard, Ron Savoie and Calvin DeLeavey)
Saturday, September 22nd, 7 PM - ADMISSION IS FREE
2005 "Best Blues" Award - NOW Magazine, Toronto, ON
1997 - 2006 Harmonica Player of the Year - SEVEN times out of the Canadian Maple Blues Award's TEN year history
1998 JUNO NOMINATION for BIG BOY CD
1996 Blues Musician of the Year Award - Jazz Report Magazine
1993 Hohner World Harmonica Championship – Trossingen, Germany - two Gold Medals in both diatonic blues and diatonic jazz
Born in Havana, Cuba, Del Junco (loosely translated "of the reeds") immigrated with his family at the age of one. He bent his first note on a harmonica when he was fourteen and has an honours from a four-year programme, majoring in sculpture at the Ontario College of Art. Sculpture has definitely had an influence on his outlook on music: "Music is just a different way of creating textures and shapes."
Playing a ten-hole diatonic harmonica, Carlos has developed the unique ability to play chromatically by using a recently developed "overblow" technique taught to him by jazz virtuoso Howard Levy. Overall, this approach to the diatonic harmonica, although much more difficult to achieve, is in many ways more expressive and communicative than the mechanised tone produced by the chromatic harmonica.
Carlos is one of the few pioneers of this overblow method, bringing musical credibility to what has still been considered by many in the music industry - a fringe folk instrument. The sophisticated sound produced by Del Junco is at once sensitive, soulful, and sexy while never forgetting the rawness inherent in blues music. During the '80s, Del Junco performed with many bands, including Latin/reggae/r&b band Eyelevel, Ontario College of Art Swing Band, with Bill Grove, and he had a six-year stint with rhythm and blues group The Buzz Upshaw [R.I.P.] Band.
With Kevin Cooke, in 1990, he formed a blues/jazz/fusion band, The Delcomos. He has recorded with Marcel Aymar (Cano), Cassandra Vassick, Oliver Schroer, Zappacosta, and has also worked with Dutch Mason, Domenic Troiano, Hock Walsh (Downchild Blues Band) and Holly Cole.
In 1991, Del Junco performed and composed the music for Tomson Highway's Dora award-winning play, "Dry Lips Oughta Move To Kapuskasing". The production toured Canada and was held over for seven weeks at Toronto's Royal Alex Theatre.
In 1993 Carlos won two gold medals at the Hohner World Harmonica Championship held in Trossingen, Germany. He was judged world's best in both the diatonic blues category and the diatonic jazz category. With the late Bill Kinnear, Carlos released his first CD, Blues, on independent label Big Reed Records in November 1993. The rich collection of blues classics was a collaborative effort, with Kinnear playing acoustic and dobro guitars and handling lead vocals.
Five out of six reviewers in the Toronto Blues Society selected Blues in their top ten releases of 1993. In March/April 1995, Del Junco travelled to Chicago with a Canada Council grant to study with Howard Levy.
This year saw the release of the critically acclaimed Just Your Fool, a sizzling live session with Kevin Breit on guitar, Al Duffy on bass, and Geoff Arsenault on drums. It was this CD and the collaborative effort with Thom "Champagne Charlie" Roberts, Big Road Blues, that won Carlos the 1996 Blues Musician Of The Year Award.
Del Junco continues to produce an eclectic palette of music on Blues Mongrel, his (2005) 6th recording and his debut for Northern Blues. The set features his daring harmonica style, which flirts with Latin rhythms (“Let’s Mambo”), rockabilly (“Run Me Down”) and even a quirky jazz-ska hybrid (“Skatoon”). And, as a singer, Carlos’s voice is almost as unique as his harp playing. Remarkable guitar work by Kevin Breit, one of the most sought-after session players in Canada and now in the U.S., thanks in large part to his work with Norah Jones and Cassandra Wilson, adds texture to the 13-track collection.
Carlos has toured Canada regularly since 1996 and tours often in Germany and the United States. He has played all the major jazz, blues, and folk festivals across Canada. For more on the Fall Fair and the lineup in the Tent, please visit:
