This week: SAT., JULY 5TH - TIM HICKS & ED KOPALA

With over ten years' professional experience, six independent albums (including two European releases), and thousands of live performances all over the world, Niagara born singer-songwriter, Tim Hicks has established himself as one of Canada’s premiere up and coming musical artists. Having performed with many bands under many monikers since age 7, Tim made the move from fronting the band MilesAbove to solo performer in 2006.

"I just feel like it’s time to find out who I am as a solo artist without the distractions and complications of having a band. Don’t get me wrong; I’ll still perform with a band when appropriate, but I think being solo will give me more freedom artistically. I’m excited about the change", Tim commented about his decision. “I’m ready to take the music in a different direction and elevate my career to a new level.”

Tim showed natural talent early on and by age 7 was in his first band, singing and playing piano. By 15, he was a mainstay in the Niagara music scene, playing in bars 4 nights a week. “Club owners used to make me stand out on the curb in between sets. It was cold in the winter”, he remembers with a smile and a laugh, a love for music and performing clearly in his eyes.

Six years of steady gigging passed before his career really began to unfold. It was during this time that Tim developed his skills performing both as a solo artist with an acoustic guitar, and performing in his band.

At 21, opportunity knocked and Tim found himself touring Europe with a Toronto band, which lead to a brief stint with Serial Joe (Aquarius) as their touring guitar player and back-up vocalist. Having returned from the road with many, many songs, and a bit of experience, Tim hit the studio with producer Corey Macfadyen of Lintbelly Productions and they recorded what became the first MilesAbove album. That album, entitled Further, was released by Escape/Sony in Europe in September 2003 to rave reviews. A second MilesAbove album, Move or be Moved, was released in February 2005 and was also received with critical acclaim.

But what’s next for Tim Hicks? A new album is in the works, a fresh backing group is being rehearsed, and Tim has performances booked several nights a week, every week! Music is his business and he takes it very seriously.

“I want to perform for as many people as I can, do as many shows as I can, write as many songs as I can, and reach as many people as I can with my music.”

With energy and determination like that, how can you go wrong? Visit Tim's Myspace site to hear some of his excellent tunes:
