MARIE-JOSEE HOULE NOMINATED IN OTTAWA XPRESS 'BEST OF' POLL

Yes, that time of year is upon us again! It's that special time when the leaves turn, you start seeing your breath on your way to work, and you are asked to vote in the Ottawa XPress 'Best Of' Poll.

It was just before stepping onto the stage [at the NAC 4th stage] last night at my CD release show that I was informed that I had received a nomination! I'm so flattered that my new release, Monsters, is nominated for "Best Folk EP of 2008"! And, once again, I find myself among other really great local musicians such as Kathleen Edwards and The Habit. The nomination itself is very flattering!

I'm not asking you to vote for me (well, kinda), but more importantly, to just take part in the poll! There are other musicians of note I'd like to highlight, such as my friends, Evil Farm Children and Sadie Hell, who were nominated for "Best Punk EP" and "Best New Band", respectively.

The link is at: http://www.ottawaxpress.ca/dossier/bestof/xpress2008.aspx. The deadline to submit your vote is Wednesday, November 5, at 11:59 p.m.

We live in a great city! It's time to celebrate what Ottawa has to offer in terms of eats, music, theatre, literature and art! And, many thanks for your support!

GARY 17's OPEN JAM TO FEATURE THE McDALES - SUN., OCT. 26

Do or die with The McDales at my open stage Sun., Oct. 26

I’m really hoping that this Sunday’s feature at my evening open stage at Gabby’s Bistro brings in some audience and more performers, because otherwise it will be the last one.

The club owner is very new to live entertainment and doesn’t realize that these events take time to build, so told me last night that if we don’t get a good turnout this week for the 8 pm-1 am show that he’ll be canceling it.

Fortunately we have a feature showcase that should make it worth your while to come out and enjoy an intimate atmosphere with good food, reasonably-priced drinks and decent sound. That’d be The McDales - Herb Dale and Fran McCann, who’ve been out a couple of times already and who say the room is very much to their liking. Their set will start at 10 pm.

As always I’ll have a house guitar and 49-key polyphonic keyboard (with full-size keys) available for performers who wish to use them. And between live action sets, I’ll be spinning tracks by local and Canadian singer-songwriters and bands – the people that you actually know and love!

The club is located at 383 Eglinton Ave. E., three blocks east of Mount Pleasant (in Toronto), and it’s easily accessible by TTC from Eglinton Station, where the Lawrence East, Eglinton East, Flemington Park, and several other buses all pass by (get off at the first stop east of Mount Pleasant) – and buses run 24 hours along this route!

I really hope to see you there this week or I won’t be seeing you there at all!

THE CROSSROADS BOOK A HALLOWEEN TREAT FOR KIDS

GIVE YOUR YOUNG READERS A REAL TREAT THIS HALLOWEEN!

"An absorbing psychological thriller as well as a rip-roaring ghost story." —BOOKLIST STARRED REVIEW

NEW REVIEW JUST IN FROM SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL!

"A well-told ghost story with plenty of twists and chills. This riveting tale is written in short, easy-to-read chapters, making it a good choice for reluctant readers. Throughout the story, the main characters grow closer to one another and gain heroic traits while the "bad guys" reveal greater depths of wickedness and insanity. Readers will relate to Zack and enjoy the book's scare factor and adventure."

CHRIS'S FAVE RAVES...

"My mom and I have both read the book The Crossroads and think it is genius!!! We would like to make a suggestion... You should see about getting this book made into a movie! I personally thought that this was one of the best books that I have ever read, and I didn't want it to end. Maybe you could write more suspenseful adventures with Zach and Judy!" —Dawna's son

NOTE TO DAWNA'S SON: We took your advice! A Hollywood Producer just asked to option the book so he can turn it into a movie!

"Chris's book was great! Tell him it was amazing! Wonderful! And another great word that is more than spectacular! It was really scary too!" —Riley, Age 12 "I just wanted to actually tell Chris how much I loved his book! In 2 days I was finished! I have also been advertising his book to all my friends and even just from reading the back they were hooked! I am doing one of my book reports on it over the summer! HURRY UP AND MAKE THE 2ND!" —Maddie, Age 11

"LET'S FIND A WAY" - A SONG TO BRING HOPE FOR CHILDREN WITH AIDS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"LET’S FIND A WAY": SONG BRINGS HOPE FOR CHILDREN WITH AIDS

TORONTO – MONDAY, OCTOBER 20TH – "Let’s Find A Way" is a labour of love or “kenoronhkwa” (in the Mohawk language of the Iroquois confederacy, it is the word for "love medicine") that began with the hopes of bringing international attention and relief to children either affected or infected by the HIV virus. It’s a concern that reaches across borders, religions and political beliefs; never before have so many performers come together in song, from around the world, to raise awareness of the need for help in fighting this deadly disease. For more information, please visit http://www.letsfindaway.ca/.

In 2006, Robin Tomlin (Chair of the Let’s Find A Way Society) approached songwriters Phil Koochin and Kevan Ehman to write a song that would inspire hope all over the world and serve as an AIDS international anthem. He could not turn a blind eye to the fact that children worldwide are being orphaned, left homeless, hungry or dying, due to this ravaging virus, and that they desperately need our help and support.

Once the song was complete, Tomlin’s dream really began to take shape when multi-talented Toronto artist Waleed Abdulhamid came on board as Musical Director of the project. He produced and recomposed the song and successfully recruited top-notch international musicians and performers to sing in their native languages.

Highly acclaimed artists such as Blood Sweat and Tears frontman David Clayton Thomas, Zaki Ibrahim, as well as the dulcet tones of the Orpheus Choir of Toronto all added their enormous talent and goodwill to the project. Over time, many more people got involved, whether for religious or personal reasons, or just for the love of children. The result of these efforts are three unique versions of the song entitled “Let’s Find A Way” - an English version, a multicultural version featuring 13 languages, and another with rap and spoken word, featuring US artist Ursula Rucker and Toronto poet/activist Boona Mohammad.

A documentary of the process, including interviews with performers and organizers, is also set for release in October of this year. The Let’s Find A Way Society hopes that people of all walks of life will be moved to purchase the CD/DVD package, and/or make a donation to this worthiest of causes by visiting the Lets Find A Way Society website.

The three versions of the song and a DVD are available now at iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, mTraks, and through http://www.letsfindaway.ca/. All proceeds will be disbursed internationally to marginal communities, including Aboriginal youth populations that do not have direct access to HIV/AIDS support.

VOTE FOR SEB @ GARY 17'S OPEN STAGE - GABBY'S (TORONTO) - OCT. 19

Vote for Sebastian Agnello at my open stage Sun., Oct. 19!

With all the elections going on these days you’d think that somebody out there would be able to talk some sense about public affairs. Luckily, this Sunday night, Oct. 19, I’ve got a feature act at my open stage who will help you make sense of the whole mess –Sebastian Agnello!

Seb, well known as one of Canada’s premier iconoclastic protest songwriters (and one heck of a great Country Rock guitar player) will do a set starting at around 10 pm at my 8 pm – 1am open stage at Gabby’s Bistro, 383 Eglinton Ave. E., three blocks east of Mount Pleasant Ave. in beautiful uptown T.O.

As always I’ll have a house guitar and 49-key polyphonic keyboard (with full size keys) available for performers who wish to use them. And between live action sets I’ll be spinning tracks by local and Canadian singer-songwriters and bands –the people that you actually know and love!

This week we have the gorgeous and fun-loving Cheyenne tending bar for us and serving on the patio out front, the other side of our cozy stage area in the window.

The club is cozy, food is quite fine and it’s easily accessible by TTC from Eglinton Station, where the Lawrence East, Eglinton East and Flemington Park buses all pass by (get off at the first stop east of Mount Pleasant) before heading north –and buses run 24 hours along this route!

Hope to see you there.

TO-NITE TNG - THE NEXT GENERATION - IN FULL COLOUR

Ever wished you could have to-nite magazine delivered to you? Well, now you can –weekly! I’m calling it “to-nite TNG” –The Next Generation!

The magazine is going to be published weekly again and from now on, like issue #420, will bein full colour! However, only a very limited number of hard copies will be available and exclusively through advertisers, whether musicians, clubs or retailers. (Another benefit of advertising.)

We live in a world where nearly everyone is on the internet now and in which the consumption of trees for hard copies and gasoline to deliver them needs to be kept to a minimum. Therefore from now on I’ll be focusing on disseminating to-nite via the internet and you can now purchase a subscription to receive the full colour pages (in .jpg format) in your inbox! From there you can view them on any image viewer or print them out at your discretion.

The cost is just $5 per month or $39 for a year. To see a sample of what you’ll receive when you become an online subscriber go to:

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=56895&l=6084d&id=654941497

Alternatively you can see the issue in the Issue #420 folder on the Files page when you join the to-nite yahoo group at http://to-nite.bigsmokemusic.com .

This new model also has some other big advantages for everyone:

It makes it much more affordable for me to produce and I can pass the savings on by reducing ad rates and making more pages;

By freeing me from relying primarily on income from club advertisers, and by making you, the reader, the source of most of my income, once again the magazine will be reader-driven instead of being such a shill for clubs. to-nite TNG will be telling it like it really is because that’s what people really want to know about;

Starting with Issue #421 I’ll be expanding the listings to include shows that I consider worth attending whether or not they have advertising in the magazine –another example of how the magazine will become once again the servant of the reader instead of the advertising dollar;
I’ll also be providing instant updates to your inbox whenever any of the information in the magazine needs to be updated (shows cancelled, new shows, etc.).

After you’ve checked out the free sample issue just send me an email to therealgaryseventeen@yahoo.ca telling me whether you want to subscribe by the month or the year and we’ll arrange online payment.

Or, if you already know you want to subscribe, make the electronic banking payment to me via that email address or go to one of the PayPal addresses below:

For monthly subscription, $5 Cdn/month:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=360996

For yearly subscription, $39.00 Cdn.:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=374371

Hope you’ll be part of this exciting new chapter in the to-nite adventure!

MARK "BIRD" STAFFORD @ PADDY SHEEHAN'S - OCT. 18

Hi, folks.

Mark 'Bird' Stafford will be performing @ Patrick (Paddy) Sheehan's Irish Pub in St. Catharines, ON, on Saturday, Oct. 18th, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=38595007550&ref=mf

It would be so appropriate to be able to imply that Mark "Bird" Stafford earned his nickname from his ability to soar on the harmonica in the fiery fashion of Charlie Parker. Sorry. Different "Bird". But - like Parker - Mark shares a phenomenal passion for making music and, as he's been performing since he was knee-high to a sharecropper, he's developed a musical voice that's become somewhat legendary in these parts - and beyond.. For good reason.

A serious student of "fat tone" harmonica, he subscribes to the teachings of the masters: Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter Jacobs, Big Walter Horton, Junior Wells and James Cotton, imbuing what he's learned with a healthy dose off his own creativity. He also injects these influences with the spirited new blood of cats including Kim Wilson, William Clarke and Rod Piazza. That's a serious stack of mentorship, but "The Bird" has listened and listened hard. And he plays back the lessons learned with all the love and respect befitting a forever blues student who is more than ready to register his own contribution to the genre.

From the frenzy he can generate from a crowd and on a dance floor to the smooth, mercurial side of his musical personality, Mark pours it on with a highly-polished singing voice and the comparably subtle, expressive tones of his accomplished harpmanship. Those who have been to Bird's church are the first to testify but never the last.

Patrick Sheehan's Irish Pub is located at 101 St. Paul St., St. Catharines, ON. 905-687-7329

Regards,

Mojo Willie
