Read on for a review of last month’s show:

It was announced by Robert Carmack, executive producer and vice president of operations for SFBAAAM, that their first concert was a complete success. The first in a continuing series entitled, "Back Street Sunday Jazz Series", was held Sunday, November 4th at the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music in downtown Oakland California. The show featured the musical leadership of Jazz educator/pianist, Dr. Bill Bell. The SRO crowd applauded, yelled and whistled at the tight band assembled by Bell, with a trio of sultry vocalists featured in the first set. The band included Bell on piano, Ollen Erich Hunt, on bass, Kamau Seitu, on drums, Melvin Butts, alto saxophone, Calvin Keys, guitar, Angela Wellman, trombone, Mark Wright, trumpet, and Yancey Taylor, on vibraphone. The set included jumping blues, swing tunes and ballads, with a "big band feel", using arrangements by Bell himself, an accomplished arranger/composer. The show opened with local favorite, Ms. Robin Gregory, as she torched the audience with her rendition of Blue Gardenia, followed by a lovely arrangement of Cole Porter's Night & Day. Valerie Cooper, an up and coming singer in the Bay Area, followed Robin, with a tender version of Body and Soul. The set finished with dynamic vocalist, Darlene Coleman, who, with polished tenacity and sheer vocal power, excited and roused the crowd with her interpretations of Tenderly and Teach Me Tonight. "It was truly magical", stated Joyce Slayton, a visiting Jazz fan from Atlanta, Georgia.

The evening's host and producer, Robert Carmack, then introduced a panel of personalities from the wider jazz community to discuss how the jazz audience can be further developed. Local jazz radio host, Sonny Buxton, Anna De Leon, proprietor of Anna's Jazz Island, Karlton Hester, department head of music at UC Santa Cruz, musician, Roger Glenn, and Dr. Bill Bell participated in the discussion, a key feature of which involved the development of young musicians, who will carry and sustain the music into the future.

The evening was not done, as Carmack gathered the crowd for the start of the second set, which featured an entirely different band and musical director. Mr Glenn Pearson, head of the music department at The College of Alameda, presented a more "edgy" sound ensemble. Multi-instrumentalist, Roger Glenn soloed on saxophone, vibes and flute. Michael Dennis was featured on drums, with David Daniel taking over duty on the bass. Ms Gregory and Ms Cooper, returned in this set to perform with the aggregation. Many of the patrons spoke volumes of praises as they exited the building for the night.

OPC founder, Ms. Angela Wellman, (trombonist/educator) was totally elated at the success of the evening’s joint venture between BMF/SFBAAAM and the OPC. . A slogan has been adopted by the two organizations and will be publicized wherever it can: “We Own This! Believe it, Use it, Live it!”

CAROLE KING - MASTERPIECE VOL. 1

Wednesday, November 21, 2007

Various Artists - Carole King Masterpiece Vol. 1 - A-Side AZ-5006, 1993
Yet another brilliant compilation (the first of three volumes on Carole King!) from A-Side.
As with other releases in the Songwriter Series, the track list combines better-known hits with obscure indie singles and B-sides. Surprises include Annette Funicello's girl-group ("Dreamin' About You"), The Crawford Brothers' Everly-esque "Good Buddies", and the Honey Bees' soulful "Some of Your Lovin'".
Some of these tracks subsequently turned up on other compilations (including Ace's Gerry Goffin & Carole King Song Collection 1961-1967), but there are plenty of unique rarities here and on the next two volumes.
Tracks
Carole King – Oh Neil (H. Greenfield, N. Sedaka, G. Goffin)
The Shirelles – Will You Love Me Tomorrow
The Drifters – Some Kind Of Wonderful
Tony Orlando – Halfway to Paradise
Bobby Vee – Take Good Care of My Baby
Gene Pitney – Every Breath I Take (H. Greenfield, C. King)
Annette & The Vonnair Sisters – Dreamin' About You
The Everly Brothers – Crying in the Rain
James Darren – Her Royal Majesty
Little Eva – The Locomotion
Gene McDaniels – Point of No Return
The Crickets – Don't Ever Change
The Crawford Brothers - Good Buddies
Craig Douglas – When My Little Girl is Smiling
Steve Lawrence – Go Away Little Girl
The Chiffons – One Fine Day
The Cookies – Will Power
Freddie Scott – Hey Girl
Skeeter Davis – I Can't Stay Mad at You
Connie Stevens – Why'd You Wanna Make Me Cry
Earl-Jean – They're Jealous of Me
The Tokens – He's in Town
The Honey Bees – Some of Your Lovin'
Carole King – Queen of the Beach
Carole King – Short Mort
Carole King – Under the Stars (Carole King)
All songs written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, except as noted.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Toronto, ON. November 27, 2007

The Colin James and The Little Big Band Christmas CD has just been released, and the Christmas Symphony tour kicks off, where Colin will be touring across Canada, playing a Christmas program with orchestral back-up to support the album.

Six-time Juno award-winner Colin James has driven his 10-album, 25-year career with his blues-influenced guitar mastery and soulful vocals. Capturing the authenticity of the R&B sound of the '40s, '50s and '60s, James and his Little Big Band (LBB) bring audiences back to the jump blues basics. A clever blend of rare covers and originals that mix swinging rhythms and dance floor contagion, LBB has brought with them the spirit of rockin' boogie and smooth, brooding blues. It’s been said that Colin James is an artist that takes the time to "go backwards in order to move forward", paying respects to legends and the sounds that made them legendary.

"No one, however, will be surprised to hear Colin James and the Little Big Band playing a brand of R&B that was once dispensed in loose, flawless three-minute bursts during which a razor-sharp rhythm section would spar with sizzling horns, some tough guitar-string bending, a church-influenced keyboard and possessed vocalists. It's the type of sound that helped rule the airwaves in the heyday of Atlantic Records in the 1950s and '60s", declared The Montreal Gazette’s Bernard Perusse in February 2006.

This Christmas, LBB delivers the same vibrant sound in the form of a holiday album that will feature some of the season's classics as well as some hand-picked rarities by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima.

“It was really cool to pick from a songbook that I have liked over the years, knowing that it also needed to suit the LBB-type style”, says James. “I really enjoyed singing songs like "I'll Be Home For Christmas", as well. "These are songs you've heard all your life really conjure up past Christmas seasons and memories from way back in your childhood.” He adds with a laugh, “It was a slightly surreal experience as it was late spring, early summer in Nashville and I would be walking down the tree lined streets near the studio singing "Let It Snow", hoping no one could hear.”

Horn-drenched with the piano and guitar dexterity that fans adore, the current release of Colin James and The Little Big Band Christmas album is accompanied by a nationwide Christmas symphony tour playing in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

Appearing alongside the Little Big Band for the two Toronto shows is Roxanne Potvin. Her latest release, The Way It Feels (Alert Records), features the likes of Daniel Lanois, John Hiatt and Bruce Cockburn.

Four-time Songwriter of the Year Juno award-winner Jimmy Rankin, whose latest release is Edge Of Day (Song Dog Music), will also be joining Colin James on the Massey Hall stage for these Christmas shows.

++ Canadian broadcaster Moses Znaimer will receive the 2008 Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award at the Juno Gala Dinner and Awards on Apr. 5 in Calgary, Alberta. He will further be honoured during a segment in the Juno Awards on Apr. 6, and televised nationally by CTV. The award is in recognition of an individual who has contributed to the growth and advancement of the Canadian music industry.

As well, Canadian country star Paul Brandt will receive the first Allan Waters Humanitarian Award at the Juno Gala Dinner. The award, made possible by funding from the CTV/CHUM Benefits package, recognizes Canadian artists who have enhanced the social fabric of Canada.

++ According to the report, "U.S. Music Forecast, 2007-2012”, from Jupiter Research, digital music sales will not offset declining CD sales in the next five years. Analysts predict that digital spending will increase but CD sales will continue to fall.

++ Toronto-based MapleCore has entered into a strategic alliance with Hamilton, Ontario-based Sonic Unyon Distribution. Under the agreement, effective immediately, Sonic Unyon Distribution is utilizing MapleCore’s backroom services and infrastructure, while still shipping directly to its independent retail accounts. Sonic Unyon Distribution, formed in 1997 by Mark Milne and Tim Potocic, continues to handle sales and marketing for its distributed labels.

++ Universal Music Canada has become Canadian distributor of Shout! Factory, effective Dec. 17. Additionally, Vivendi Visual Entertainment Canada, the video arm of UMC, has expanded its existing deal with Santa Monica, California-based Shout! Factory to include its entire video catalog.

++ R&B artists Massari and Ottawa-based urban label Capital Prophets Records have severed ties. Massari achieved a commercial breakthrough in Canada with his self-titled, debut album on CP Records in 2005.

++ Former I Mother Earth singer Edwin, former Our Lady Peace guitarist Mike Turner, former Tea Party drummer Jeff Burrows and bassist Amir Epstein of Zygote have been recording together.

++ Throughout December, a different New Pornographer member is hosting XM Satellite Radio's weekly Tuesday “XMU Artists in Residency Time” program on the XMU channel.

++ Open Road Recordings artist Johnny Reid will tour Canada March 17-30, opening for Martina McBride. His sophomore album, Kicking Stones, has been certified gold (50,000 units) in Canada. Not often that happens for a domestic country album.

RANDOM CHUCKLE:

++ On his website, Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan reminisces about his solo 2006 tour of Canada, blogging, “Occasionally we had the luxury of a hotel. I’ll never forget The Dream Land Motel in Moose Jaw strangely enough, and that’s in Saskatchewan.” On his DVD, Gillan’s Inn - The Deluxe Tour Edition, with footage from the tour, when asked about Moose Jaw, Gillan deadpans, “Moose Jaw…I hit an elk once, similar to a moose, heading from Stockholm to Narvik, Norway one time. He was spread all over the front of the car.”

True Fact: Residents of Moose Jaw are known as Moose Javians.

THE NIAGARA RHYTHM SECTIONLIVE AT THE ANCHORAGE 1.0

CD Review by D.M. Wells

This brand-new 10-song disk celebrates the 4th anniversary of the Niagara Rhythm Section’s (NRS) “Saturday Night Musical Improv” at The Anchorage in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The core formation of the band is comprised of Steve Goldberger on bass and vocals, Dave Norris on drums and Penner MacKay on percussion, Steve Grisbrook on guitar and Herb Nelson on keys.

It features a variety of players who have been featured with the NRS in the weekly series over those years, some of them on repeat occasions. Although their musical friends are of both the male and female persuasion, this first compilation features just the guys. I’ve been assured that some female guests will be included on the second disk.

It starts off with a mellow funky groove, interpreting the Jordan/Hickman/Bartley blues classic “Early in the Morning”, featuring Steve Goldberger on vocals and bass, Denis Keldie on keys, and Neil Chapman on electric blues guitar – all very tasteful.

John Mays of Fathead, who has now apparently started up his own band, takes over the vocal microphone on a rhumba version of Mike Bloomfield’s “Georgia Swing”.

Since these performances are all live improvisations, the basic songs morph into jams that are substantial in duration, one being as long as 12 minutes, and the majority lasting around seven.

Johnny Max, ever the comedian, intros “Loozianna” Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie” by stating “I’m not really drunk; I’m hammered – there’s a difference. It’s what I look for in a woman; I don’t think it’s the other way around.” You have to interpret that properly to see the humour. In any case, the players and audience sound like they are having lot of fun. Johnny displays his deep, irrepressibly sexy, vocals (not unlike TJ’s own pipes), with “The Stevie McGeeGees - and Dave” funkin’ up the musical proceedings.

Guitarist Steve Grisbrook does the vocals on made-for-blues Leiber/Stoller/Pomus’s “Youngblood”, recorded in a classic rock mode by The Coasters in 1957. The Beatles also covered it in their early live performances. Either Ed Kopala or Steve Grisbrook cleverly incorporates Deep Purple’s famous “Smoke on the Water” lick into the song.

Downchild vocalist Chuck Jackson got the crowd howlin’, too, on Chester Burnett’s “Who’s Been Talkin’”, naturally accompanying nicely on harmonica, too, on this lively, mid-tempo rhumba.

“Who’s Been Talkin’” blends in seamlessly with Roscoe Gordon’s “No More Doggin’” (with a dance contest being announced). This one’s touted as an “old-time jump blues” and features Denis Keldie on full-throated tremulous vocals similar to Chuck’s and juicy keyboards and Neil Chapman on guitar.

Tony Springer prefaces a request for an “island song” by stating “I know you think I look so much like Kim Mitchell”, with someone else jokingly suggesting “something by Don Ho” (e.g. “Tiny Bubbles”), but Tony thankfully decides on Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up” (the 12-minute version). The band gets into the groove by providing harmony and background vocals. Tony takes the “improv” nature of the jam seriously by providing his own impromptu humorous lyrics and patois (including a Flintstones reference), which, of course, is one of his claims to fame, apart from his fabulous fretwork. Steve Goldberger gets to boost up the basswork here, as well. Bob, may he ever rest in peace, would have wholeheartedly approved, I’m sure.

The now sadly-departed Joe Ingrao, to whom the recording is devoted, sings and plays piano on a jazz-rock version of (B.B.) King/Clarke’s “Why I Sing the Blues”, with guitarist Eric Mahar standing in for “the king of the blues”. Penner MacKay is keeping time on the drumkit and Steve Goldberg holds down the bottom end of the mix on bass. Speaking of “bottom ends”, all of these male singers have vocal tones well-suited to sing the blues, and Joe was certainly no exception. If you’d never heard B.B. King’s original, you could appreciate this adaptation as it stands, but I still prefer the original melancholy filled conveyance.

Another classic, “Green Onions”, is performed to perfection by the Niagara Rhythm Section, with Lance Anderson majestically thrilling the listener on a Hammond B3!

Steve intros the closer, “Talk to Me”, by stating, “We’ll send you out on a ballad-y note”. This features Cobourg’s Rob Page on keyboards and Bruce Longman on guitar and vocals. It’s a beautiful ’50s-sounding slow-tempo rhythm and blues composed by the team of John & Seneca that was apparently written in the ’60s, but I wasn’t successful in tracking down the original recording of it. Not to worry – this one will send shivers up and down your spine, a la Willie Dixon’s “You Send Me”. You couldn’t ask for a better closer to one of the most relaxing blues recordings I’ve heard in a while.

I encourage fans of contemporary Canadian blues players to add this to your collection!

PHOTOS AND NOTES FROM IAN SIEGEL'S PNW TOUR (2006)
PHOTOS & TEXT BY DENNIS "BLUES BOSS" DUDLEY

Ian Siegal
Back in the summer of ’06 I got the opportunity (through connections from the Blindman’s Blues Forum) to work with Ian Siegal out of the U.K. (www.iansiegal.com). Ian is a major talent and has two CDs out – Meat & Potatoes (2005) and Swagger (just out – ’07). He came alone to the Pacific Northwest (PNW) and needed equipment and a band.

I picked Ian up at the Sea-Tac airport on a Tuesday evening, and we then drove to Tacoma. Rod Cook & Toast were at the Swiss Tavern. Rod was nice enough to loan me his 1930 National Resonator for Ian. We stayed and Ian got up and did 6-7 songs with Rod – tore the place up!!!

Wednesday night we had a rehearsal in the ‘boat shop’ at Bardahl with Ian and the Mark Riley Trio – (Mark Riley on guitar – Howard Hooper on bass – Marty Vadalabene on drums). After just over a hour, Ian said: “You guys know what you are doing – let’s go have a beer” (a prophetic statement for the trip).

Thursday we drove 7 hours to Bend, Oregon, and did the Domino Room. Friday we drove back to Seattle to do the Highway 99 (blues club) on Friday & Saturday nights. Small, but boisterous crowds and good CD sales. Sunday we did Jazzbones in Tacoma.

Monday we drove to Portland, Oregon (150+ miles), for the Waterfront Blues Festival (2nd largest festival of its kind in U.S.). Ian had two slots. Around noon he did the A&E stage as a solo (with Rod’s national). A couple hours later the entire band did the Credit Union stage. A crowd of 15,000+ [rest of this paragraph censored - haha].
We got to go on one of the “Blues Cruises” that night on the Willamette River. Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers with Reba Russell (one of my new fav female vocalists!) were the featured music on the cruise. At the end of the night, approaching 1 AM, Ian was invited to the stage. He and Thackery talked briefly and decided on “Long Distance Call”, and Ian absolutely nailed it!!!! The guy is amazing…and a nice guy too.

Looks like he might be back in the PNW this summer – doing Winthrop R&B Festival – and he will be using the Mark Riley Trio and me again.

Should be fun.

JERRY JOHNSONSHOW ME SOME ACTION

(cover art not currently available)

CD Review by D.M. Wells

Once known in Toronto’s Queen Street West district as “Jerry Hendrix” due to his rapid-fire guitar licks (and while Jimi's own guitar at that), this Burlington/Hamilton-based musician is now more familiar as a modern-day “Frankenstein”. Ever-grateful to a team of medical doctors, and perhaps faith in a higher power, he has completely risen from the ashes of a serious car crash (of which he was, apparently, at fault) a few years ago. He’s paid his dues in more ways than one and seems ready to “take control” of his life now.

Jerry Johnson took the bull by the horns in producing this 10-song rock-heavy/blues CD (recorded and engineered by former Saga drummer Steve Negus), accompanied by Hamilton’s award-winning drummer Jack Pedler and bassist Rob “The Bubba” Brown. Jerry also performs all guitars and lead vocals on it, with Cheryl Weston and Zoe Weston-Shepherd on background vocals on the only country-blues (albeit electrified) “When It Rains”, the CD closer.

The recording starts off with a furious instrumental guitar boogie appropriately entitled “Maniacal Fervor, Texas”. The slower-paced but still hard-driving blues, “It’s Not a Dream”, is also practically instrumental, containing only a single verse and a wistful melody. It may or not reflect the aforementioned vehicular incident.

The lyrics to the funky bass-driven title track, “Show Me Some Action”, refer to the frustrating “big talk” (lies and promises), so prevalent on the promotional side of the music industry. Even though “money talks” is the more appropriate adage than “talk is cheap”, sometimes even financial incentives can’t get past the b.s. meter.

“All the King’s Horses” is another intense instrumental, in straight-ahead rock mode, that also allows Pedler free-rein on the drumkit, on which he never fails to impress. If you like “holes” in your melodies, forget it – this is a full-on Mozart concerto for guitar – rock me, Amadeus!

“I Knew Right Away”, a finger-blistering, cut-time blues-rock shuffle with a big fat bass line, is classic Jerry Johnson, as evidenced from his historical musical identity as the founding member of Them Damned Johnsons. It’s a musically thrilling ode to romance (or maybe just lust).

“Mine” is also a slow-blues instrumental with a very pretty melody that not unlike “It’s a Dream”, but this one gives particular credence to the Hendrix-like comparisons. This one’s on an equal par with “Little Wing” in its display of musical emotion.

“Ain’t Gonna Sit and Cry” is a fusion of blues, rock, funk, and jazz, whose rhythmic pattern reminded me vaguely of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” while incorporating some interesting reverberation technique on guitar. It’s a song addressing the issue of rejection by a many-times-broken heart gone cold.

“Take Control” follows the musical funky-blues-rock pattern of “I Knew Right Away”, but it’s an appealing groove, just the same. If nothing else, Jerry’s style is consistent, so his long-time fans will dig it. There is effective use of reverberation here, too, along the lines of Vanilla Fudge’s “I’m Losing You”.

“Time to Get Wet”, even more than some of the other tracks, reminded me of music recorded by Gus Pappas and the New Breed (now of Bottle Devils), from their brilliant No Control release. This is one of my favourites on the CD, the psychedelic flavouring of which should justifiably render it “nouveau classic rock”.

As mentioned previously, “When It Rains” is a mellow electric country-blues (with a touch of gospel) that is not unlike the Stones, as well, and it’s enhanced by the lovely background vocals of the Weston women, however minimally they are used. It’s a nice little “comedown” from the musical “high” experienced throughout the disc.

Show Me Some Action does that and more.

What is "The Vagina Monologues"?

Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," "The Vagina Monologues" dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women's experiences. Based on interviews with a diverse group of hundreds of women - from a Long Island antiques dealer to a Bosnian refugee - "The Vagina Monologues" brazenly explores questions often pondered, but seldom asked. Ms. Ensler has performed the play to great acclaim throughout the world - from Zagreb to Santa Barbara, from London to Seattle, from Jerusalem to Oklahoma City.

What is V-Day?

V-Day is a global movement that helps anti-violence organizations throughout the world continue and expand their core work while drawing public attention to the larger fight to stop worldwide violence (including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), sexual slavery) against women and girls.

V-Day is also a day (in Feb and/or March), for which annual theatrical and artistic events are produced around the world to transform consciousness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. Groups around the world present productions of "The Vagina Monologues" on or around V-Day (February 14th) to raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls. The proceeds from these events are donated to local organizations in the community that are working to stop sexual violence.

2008 marks the 10th anniversary of VDay

2008 marks V to the 10th - the celebration, the call, the decision, the next step. The next ten years we're together, we will raise the stakes, go further, go deeper, increase the power and CHANGE THE STORY OF WOMEN.

For more information on VDAY and The Vagina Monologues, please visit www.vday.org.
The 'V' in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina.

"This is just a short announcement to let everyone know that, on the upcoming shows in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany & Switzerland, we will be introducing some of the new songs from the Wake the Sleeper CD by way of saying thank you to every one of you that kept the faith. We will be playing more songs in Germany and Switzerland, when we headline, than in Finland, Sweden & Denmark, due to the fact that we have a shorter set to play when we are special guests with Alice Cooper. ABOUT THE AOH

The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) is the oldest Catholic lay organization in America. Officially formed in New York in 1836, it was organized centuries earlier in Ireland for the purpose of defending Gaelic values and protecting the Catholic Church and its clergy from persecution. Although the name AOH can only be traced back to 1641, the organization can claim continuity of purpose, and its motto, “Friendship, Unity, and True Christian Charity”, to the organization known as the Defenders of 1565.

The AOH in America is organized into divisions, county boards, and state boards, and is governed by a national board. Annual dances, concerts and parades sponsored by all levels of the AOH raise millions for charity, while providing a showcase for the positive contributions of the Irish to every walk of American life. [There is also a Canadian chapter in Montreal, PQ.]
