Back in the summer of ’06 I got the opportunity (through connections from the Blindman’s Blues Forum) to work with Ian Siegal out of the U.K. (www.iansiegal.com). Ian is a major talent and has two CDs out – Meat & Potatoes (2005) and Swagger (just out – ’07). He came alone to the Pacific Northwest (PNW) and needed equipment and a band.
I picked Ian up at the Sea-Tac airport on a Tuesday evening, and we then drove to Tacoma. Rod Cook & Toast were at the Swiss Tavern. Rod was nice enough to loan me his 1930 National Resonator for Ian. We stayed and Ian got up and did 6-7 songs with Rod – tore the place up!!!
Wednesday night we had a rehearsal in the ‘boat shop’ at Bardahl with Ian and the Mark Riley Trio – (Mark Riley on guitar – Howard Hooper on bass – Marty Vadalabene on drums). After just over a hour, Ian said: “You guys know what you are doing – let’s go have a beer” (a prophetic statement for the trip).
Thursday we drove 7 hours to Bend, Oregon, and did the Domino Room. Friday we drove back to Seattle to do the Highway 99 (blues club) on Friday & Saturday nights. Small, but boisterous crowds and good CD sales. Sunday we did Jazzbones in Tacoma.

Monday we drove to Portland, Oregon (150+ miles), for the Waterfront Blues Festival (2nd largest festival of its kind in U.S.). Ian had two slots. Around noon he did the A&E stage as a solo (with Rod’s national). A couple hours later the entire band did the Credit Union stage. A crowd of 15,000+ [rest of this paragraph censored - haha].
We got to go on one of the “Blues Cruises” that night on the Willamette River. Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers with Reba Russell (one of my new fav female vocalists!) were the featured music on the cruise. At the end of the night, approaching 1 AM, Ian was invited to the stage. He and Thackery talked briefly and decided on “Long Distance Call”, and Ian absolutely nailed it!!!! The guy is amazing…and a nice guy too.
Looks like he might be back in the PNW this summer – doing Winthrop R&B Festival – and he will be using the Mark Riley Trio and me again.
Should be fun.
