The Ottawa R&B Festival began in 1988 to illustrate the bountiful talent of this city’s R&B/Blues scene. This is the 20th edition of this home-grown festival.

It had all began decades before with the likes of Heavens Radio, T. W. Lloyd’s All-Stars, the Back Ally John Blues Revue, Larry ("Bird") Mootham and D. J. Brian Murphy amongst many others…and with sporadic blues shows at The Beacon Arms, Barrymores, The Roxy…but the Ottawa blues scene really came to blossom in early '84 after the initiation of the legendary “Blues Tues” Jam. It was here that blues-based musicians got more than a toe-hold at the defunct Downstairs Club under Mexicali Rosas on Rideau St.

Along with the worldwide explosion of the blues genre(Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fabulous T-Birds, The Commitments, et al.), it was at this social and musical evening where connections and friendships were made and bands formed. With the opening of The Rainbow, The Penguin, and Tucson's, Ottawa musicians had the venues to play the music they needed for their own soul.

It was in this atmosphere that the Ottawa R&B Festival became a grand get-together for Ottawa area musicians to show-off their talents and for the audience to soak up the vibe.

There are two brand-new acts this year:

The first is Pipeline - a rockin’ blues trio with blues veterans Steve Lauder, guitar and voice (of The Result and The Backtrack Blues Band), George Prendergast, bass, and Bill Brennan, drums (for Backtrack, Johnny Russell) - Fri., Nov. 16, 9:30 p.m.

The second is The Flying Baldini Bros. - Tony D. (of The Jook Joint) & Steve Lund (of Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo). Stripped down and dangerous blues guitar & bongos - Sat., Nov. 17, 10pm.

Capping off Saturday night is the BiG HoNKIN’…Invitational Blues Jam: With Danny Artuso, Sean Burke, Tony D, Dean Depuis, Todd Harper, Steve Lund, Matt Sobb…plus?

Most of us don’t get to see each other as often as we used to and we have just the right notes stored up for the BiG HoNKiN’…Invitational Blues Jam.

Here we are again, to get all our collective mojos workin’ and to boogie in all sorts of bluesy tones.

Thanks,

Steve Lund - Festival Organizer & Founder
