REVIEW OF "WATCHMEN", BY MARTY MURRAY

Watchmen

This movie has many similarities to The Dark Knight in that it's a complex story, very dark, adult, and features several very ambiguous characters who could be considered both good or evil, depending on your point of view. I knew nothing about "Watchmen" going in, and I enjoyed the storyline very much, in which the world of the 1950s and the alternate reality of the 1980s in which the movie takes place are joined and bridged. This is a world where Nixon is still president and the United States won the Vietnam war, with the help of a godlike being called Dr. Manhattan, who is central to the plot of the film. Those expecting a straightforward story with a satisfying ending will be disappointed, but this is one of the first superhero films where the characters are shown as regular human beings as well as their alter-egos, in any realistic way, at least. The film is very stylishly done also - a real treat for the eyes. Quite a work of imagination. I can see why it is considered one of the best stories of the 20th century
