Kim Doolittle does it all – great songs, persona and playing - featuring at my open stage tonight
As I told the subscribers of my to-nite magazine in last Friday’s issue, I’ve been a fan of Kim Doolittle’s for over a decade.
“I’ve often said that if she had a Mutt Lange or a René Angélil behind her, Kim Doolittle would be heard on the radio these days as much as Shania Twain or Celine Dion. For not only is she a songbird of world class caliber, she’s also a killer songwriter whose extensive catalogue is, in my opinion and that of many others in the know on the TO music scene, the equal of any Country star or Pop diva.
I’ve been a fan for over ten years and in 1999 when to-nite first went on the web with our former to-nite.net site, it was a profile of her just released ‘Natural Born Woman’ cd that was the feature story on the cover.
I still enjoy playing her songs, especially “Could You Fall In Love With Me”, which appears on my ‘SpringRise Salad’ compilation cd, at my open stages.”
Kim’s just back in TO from another cruise ship gig and tonight, Tues. August 11, she’s the feature act at my weekly open stage at California Pub, 914 Pape Ave. at Mortimer. Her set will start around 10:45, with the event kicking off at 9 p.m. and running till 1:30 or later.
Because I’m pressed for time again this week I’m just going to list the people who played last week in the order they appeared:
- Roger Zuraw
- Kyle Duffin
- Sebastian Agnello (solo and with Tony Chun singing a song)
- Frank Rota
- Pete Otis & Martin Hung
- Alan Moffat
- The McDales (with Sebastian Agnello on piano)
- Brian Blain
- Michael Sahle
- Stella Rose (doing a late night feature)
- Shawn Sage
- Edo Peled (with Shawn Sage on harp)
If you want to see pics of some of the performers mentioned in this note, you can got to my Gary 17’s Acoustic Open Stage group on Facebook and check ‘em out!
On the mp3 player I spun tunes by Sebastian Agnello; Flickershow;’ Foggy Mountain Dead Boys; Fidget; Ellen Carol; Dave Murphy; Damon Hines; Cynthia Namaro; and Shari Lynn.
This week Stuart Wilson of www.bigfix-music.com will be there doing his thing, recording sets at no charge to the performers. He’ll send you a mp3 sample and if you like what you hear and want to buy the set it’s just $1.00 per minute! Take note though that he usually finishes recording by about midnight (though if you arrive before that and ask him to stay operational he almost certainly will).
And of course as always this week I’ll have three mics set up, the excellent house guitar provided courtesy of Long & McQuade Musical Instruments and my 61-keys polyphonic, touch-sensitive Yamaha keyboard for players to use and I’ll be spinning tracks from Canadian and local singer-songwriters and bands between live acts.
Do also check out the menu at California —the food is home-made by Danny and Jeanette and they’re family-sized portions too. There are several draughts on tap and a fully stocked liquor and wine bar (at neighbourhood bar prices!). And of course, the patio will be open (it’s supposed to be a beautiful summer evening and night!) and there’s a big retractable awning if the rain should make an unscheduled appearance.
Getting to California is a breeze —and there’s a small parking lot for five or six vehicles behind it, while street parking is free after 9 p.m. on both sides of Pape. Several buses run by frequently, including the Mortimer bus (#62) between Broadview and Main stations and, north from Pape Station, the Thorncliffe Park (#81) and Don Mills (#25) buses —and after 1 a.m. the Don Mills 303 bus runs all night between Steeles and Queen and stops on Pape right out front of the club’s entrance at 914 Pape Avenue on the corner of Pape and Mortimer a few blocks north of Danforth Ave.
