ROLLIN’ OUT WEST – FILBERG FESTIVAL

Now, you Toronto folks can’t say I didn’t warn you last week when I advised you to catch Julian’s Axis shows. Fact is, JULIAN FAUTH will be on the road out in western Canada for the next while, though he is jetting back to play some festivals here in Ontario.

On Friday and Saturday, July 31 and August 1, Julian will be playing two piano sets and a guitar set at the Filberg Festival in Comox on Vancouver Island. The Filberg Festival for 27 years has been encouraging excellence in all forms of arts and crafts. The Festival has established a world-wide reputation for the excellence of the work of its juried artisans, and today is western Canada's largest juried outdoor arts show.

Set amongst the stately trees and gardens of the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park in Comox on Vancouver Island, the Filberg Festival is a unique event. You can wander through the grounds surrounded by beautiful gardens, rustic out-buildings and a magnificent view of Comox Harbour and the Beaufort Mountain Range, a revitalizing experience. Artistic Director BOBBIE BLUE every year arranges a line up of the best blues, folk and roots musicians, this year including featuring DAVID GOGO, FRED EAGLESMITH, LESLIE ALEXANDER, and our own JULIAN FAUTH, among many others. Hey now, if you need more persuasion the festival also has the IRISH DESCENDANTS and LUNCH AT ALLEN’S (reason enough for me to go). Check out the entire festival at http://www.filbergfestival.com.

ROLLIN’ OUT WEST – COTTAGE BISTRO, VANCOUVER

JULIAN FAUTH is making amends (some of you know what I mean) by performing in the city of Vancouver on August 1. After his last set at Filberg Julian is catching a plane to Vancouver to play the Cottage Bistro, 4468 Main Street on August 1. The Cottage is an awesome venue for food and Blues and Roots music. Not only that, but the owner, EUGENE, is one of the most knowledgeable people on the west coast about single malt Scotch whiskey. Aye, one of the joys and ruinations of life, Scotch is. More joy than ruination, though, because who can afford to drink that water of life more than once or twice a month? Would you believe that I just remove the cork and sniff it? Drinking it is meant for marriages, births and Bar Mitzvahs. The JULIAN FAUTH show starts at 8:00 PM PST and the cover is only $5 – bargain for a JUNO winner!

ROLLIN’ OUT WEST – WHITE ROCK BLUES SOCIETY

Then on Sunday August 2, Julian will be doing a special concert for the White Rock Blues Society, down near Surrey, not far from the border with the United States. You all in the west will recognize the names of the Society’s artistic co-directors JAMIE BUIE and HARPDOG BROWN. Check out the Society’s website at http://www.whiterockblues.com for information about show time, ordering tickets, etc.

KITCHENER BLUES FESTIVAL

Every one of us was saddened by the passing of the great MEL BROWN earlier this year. For many years Mel played the Kitchener Blues Festival both on the stage and at the Fundraising Gala prior to the Festival itself. This year one of his most accomplished protégés, JULIAN FAUTH, will be taking his place. Julian plays the Gala on Wednesday night, August 5 and the festival itself on Friday at noon. This is one of the best blues festivals in Ontario, folks, this year featuring SHAWN KELLERMAN, MORGAN DAVIS, ALEX TINTINALLI, JW JONES, CANNED HEAT, RONNIE HAWKINS, ELVIN BISHOP, MARIA MULDUAR, LEON REDBONE (man don’t this list ever stop?), DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS, GEORGE OLLIVER AND GUITAR SHORTY, to name just some of the great acts booked this year. Check out the whole lineup at http://www.kitchenerbluesfestival.com. Mercy, did I mention? This event is free, folks.

BRAMPTON FOLK CLUB

The Brampton Folk Club presents free weekly concerts every Thursday in July and August at the Garden Square, at Main and Queen Street in Brampton, directly in front of the Rose Theatre. On August 6 the club presents JUNO award winning bluesman JULIAN FAUTH. The show starts at noon and goes until 2:00 PM. Bring your lunch and enjoy great blues on the patio.

HILLEBRAND BLUES AT THE WINERY

Then on Saturday, August 8, JULIAN FAUTH will be playing Hillebrand Blues at the Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. For some 20 years Hillebrand Estate Winery has sponsored jazz and blues festivals on its grounds, showcasing the best Canadian jazz and blues talents. This year’s Blues at the Winery also features JOHNNY MAX, TREASA LAVASSEUR and LOCO ZYDECO. For more details click http://www.hillebrand.com.

ROLLIN’ OUT WEST – CALGARY INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL

And you thought I was done! Nosirree. After the show at the Hillebrand Winery, Julian will be flying back out west to play on Sunday August 9 at the CALGARY INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL, backed up by TIM WILLIAMS AND THE ELECTRO-FIRES. Other musicians at the festival are RITA CHIARELLI, COLIN JAMES, WATERMELON SLIM, JOE BONAMASSA, JOHN CAMPBELLJOHN, ZAC HARMON, KAT DANSER, SUE FOLEY and BOOKER T JONES, among other great acts.

All in all, Julian will be playing several special concerts and four festivals during the next two weeks, alongside some of the greatest names on today’s blues scene.
