LEGENDARY SONGWRITERS TEAM UP ACROSS GENERATIONS McLauchlan, Bentall, MacLellan and Rogers perform The Canadian Songbook | |
Four of Canada's most acclaimed songwriters will be performing together on stage sharing songs and stories in a special intimate acoustic concert called The Canadian Songbook. Multi-Juno Award winners Murray McLauchlan and Barney Bentall have written some of Canada’s most familiar classics. Catherine MacLellan and Nathan Rogers are the respective heirs of iconic Canadian troubadours Gene MacLellan and Stan Rogers, now making waves of their own on the international stage. Sharing the stage in a classic songwriters’ circle acoustic presentation, the Canadian Songbook will be appearing across the Maritimes in October 2009.
Murray McLauchlan is a multiple Juno Award winner and a member of the order of Canada. He began performing in coffee houses around Toronto’s Yorkville area in the 1960’s. McLauchlan has released 18 albums, has had songs covered by the likes of Tom Rush, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and is considered to be one of the most important figures in Canadian folk music.
Barney Bentall, famous as the leader of Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts, whose hit singles "Something to Live For" and "Come Back to Me" are Canadian radio classics. After ten years of recording and touring with the Legendary Hearts, Bentall started a cattle ranch in 1997 in British Columbia. Then in 2006, he released his first solo album titled Gift Horse on True North Records . In 2008, he released a DVD of his live show The Grand Cariboo Opry. Bentall’s newest CD The Inside Passage is set for release on True North Records in September 2009.
Catherine MacLellan is a songwriter whose music is steeped in the Canadian folk tradition and whose songs are hauntingly intimate and powerful. MacLellan has won six PEI Music Awards and earned multiple East Coast Music award nominations in 2006 and 2007. Her work is a characteristic of the work of many of the singer/songwriters Catherine cites as influences and inspirations - such as Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffith, and Townes Van Zandt. Catherine was voted “Critics Favorite New Discoveries” in Canadian folk Magazine Penguin Eggs in 2008. Her new album Water in the Ground has received critical acclaim from the international press. She is the daughter of iconic Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan, writer of the classic “Snowbird” recorded by Anne Murray, and “Put Your Hand In The Hand” recorded by Ocean.
Nathan Rogers is the son of legendary musician Stan Rogers. Some say he was born into it, some that he was born with it, while others claim he has earned it. With one foot planted firmly in folk music’s traditional roots and the other reaching into its dynamic future, Nathan Rogers isn’t entirely sure what ‘it’ is; singer, songwriter, guitarist, throat-chanter, percussionist, revivalist, or innovator. Nathan’s performance style leaves the audiences wondering where the rest of the band is hiding. Singing, chanting, playing the guitar and stomping, he fills any stage with magnificent powerfully clear lyrics and arrangements.
The Canadian songbook hits the road with eight concerts across the East Coast for an evening of songs and stories in a special intimate acoustic concert beginning on October 15 in Fredericton NB.
