Holger Petersen Stony Plain's E-mail Newsletter #53 June 10, 2009

There are so many pleasures involved with Stony Plain, and one of the deepest ones we've had in many years was being at the Blues Awards in Memphis, and watching Jeff Healey's Mess of Blues honoured as Blues/Rock Recording of the Year.

Hearing Cristie Healey's heartfelt speech about her husband, and how pleased he would have been - correction, how pleased he was - made the occasion even more meaningful.

Mess of Blues has been a triumph not only for Jeff and his fans, but for our friends at Ruf Records and, dare I say it, for Stony Plain as well. It's a real pleasure to announce, in this Newsletter, that another Jeff Healey blues CD is on the way.

To visit with other Stony Plain artists in Memphis, to chat with B.B. King, to spend quality time with Maria Muldaur, to feel again the deep soul vibe that is a very real part of the city, and generally to share in North America's most prestigious blues celebration was a memory that will remain fresh for a long, long time.

Sadly this was also one of the last events in which Koko Taylor participated. She may have been Queen of the Blues, but she was always accessible, friendly, and warm-hearted, and fans around the world will miss her.

THIS JUST IN

Just as we were sending this out we got the great news that Ronnie Earl debuts at number 4 and Duke Robillard debuts at number 7 on this weeks Billboard Blues Chart, which is based on SoundScan sales!

Ronnie Earl - Living In The Light Ronnie Earl's most passionate CD to date

A new Ronnie Earl CD, Living in the Light, (SPCD-1340) has just been released. It's his fifth recording for Stony Plain, and it's his most deeply felt, intense and emotional album yet.

Like his other albums, it offers a varied mix of blues, soul and gospel, all marked by his distinctive guitar style and the passionate conviction he brings to every note he plays.

Living in the Light also features many surprises and deep pleasures - among them New England singer Dave Keller, who delivers two gospel influenced songs - the powerful opener "Love Love Love" and Bob Dylan's "What Can I Do For You" - which also features a 10-piece choir from Earl's Baptist Church.

Kim Wilson contributes three vocals, and superbly played harmonica parts to the new record. One of them is Robert Jr. Lockwood's classic "Take a Little Walk With Me," and another is a deeply personal song about the Holocaust, "Child of a Survivor." Earl, who is Jewish, says: "It's the deepest of blues - a story that always needs to be told; future generations will all need to be reminded of what happened."

Ronnie Earl's band, The Broadcasters, are superbly on form - Dave Limina's Hammond B3 and piano provides a bedrock for the guitar work, while Jim Mouradian on bass and Lorne Entress on drums are an uplifting rhythm team.

Earl himself can't define his unique style, just his intentions as a player: "I'm just trying to reach into peoples' souls. I'm just trying to reach their humanity."

Duke Robillard - Stomp! The Blues Tonight Duke Robillard turns clock back to classic R&B era

Duke Robillard's long and amazingly fruitful relationship with Stony Plain Records has produced some astonishing music - and his latest for the label adds horns and digs deep into the riotous, raunchy, rockin' '40s and '50s R&B that helped launch rock and roll.

The new CD, Stomp! The Blues Tonight (SPCD-1342) is certainly different from anything else Robillard has recorded for Stony Plain. The band, with long-term colleagues Doug James on baritone and tenor, and Rich Lataille on tenor and alto - makes sure that tunes like "Stomp the Blues Tonight," "Do Me Right," "Look and Don't Touch," "Tore Up" and "Playful Baby" roar out of your speakers. A rock solid rhythm section, and Bruce Bears' inspired piano playing gives the tunes the lift they need.

The 16 tracks combine songs associated with the great vocalists of that era - Wynonie Harris, Roy Milton, Big Joe Turner and more - with originals that are perfectly in the pocket. The tunes also reflect the shift when saxophone-dominated bands changed to accommodate the electric guitar as the lead instrument. The album also acknowledges the rise of the female singer in the late '40s - and vocalist Sunny Crownover certainly channels Helen Humes' classic song, "Million Dollar Secret" and "Hands Off," a tune associated with Kansas City pioneer Jay McShann.

A glance at Duke Robillard's discography since he signed with Stony Plain in 1993 would suggest that this is a man who lives in the recording studio. But he's also a veteran "road dog" who has played as many as 300 live shows in a year, rivaling the legendary tour schedules of Buddy Guy and B.B. King in their younger days. Robillard travels literally from Montreal to Moscow, from Brazil to Barcelona, and from London, England to London, Ontario.

Now, with this CD - his 16th for the Edmonton-based label - Robillard has demonstrated yet again the freshness of his approach to the roots of American music.

This is great, honking, squawking, sax and guitar driven music. The early years of R&B saw the making of fabulous American music, and the new CD is proof you can recreate the past, twist it up a bit, and make it sound as tough as it used to!

Play Stomp! The Blues Tonight as loud as your speakers go. Oh, yes, and dance! It was released June 2 in Canada and the U.S.

Jeff Healey - Mess Of Blues Mess of Blues wins Blues Foundation Award

The late, legendary guitarist Jeff Healey's CD, Mess of Blues, was named Rock Blues Album of the Year at the 30th annual Blues Music Awards in Memphis in May. Mess of Blues came out shortly after Healey lost his battle with cancer and passed away at the age of 41 on March 2, 2008. The Rock Blues Album of the Year category was added for the first time with this year's Blues Music Awards show.

Accepting the award on his behalf was Jeff's widow, Cristie. Acknowledging the standing ovation she said: "Jeff put so much heart and soul into this album; it marked his return to the blues. He would have been very proud to accept this award."

Healey was one of the most distinctive guitar players of our time, and Mess of Blues was his first blues/rock album in eight years. The CD was recorded in late 2007 with the musicians who regularly accompanied him at his Toronto nightclub, Jeff Healey's Roadhouse; The Jeff Healey Blues Band was formed as a "house band" to accompany guests who sat in when Healey played the club that carried his name, and to meet the international demand for the artist's powerful and unusual guitar work.

Amos Garrett - Get Way Back Amos Garrett: After all these years, still big in Japan

Amos Garrett has almost lost count of the times he has toured in Japan, but his most recent tour - he returned in Canada last month - was one of the most remarkable yet.

"I usually go every three years or so; this time I went back much sooner than usual, so I was a little concerned that the tour wouldn't do as well. In fact, though, all but one of the 14 concerts was completely sold out," he said. "And I even got a couple of days off to go fishing."

He is full of praise for the two musicians who accompany him on his tours - bass player Bun, and guitar, mandolin and ukulele master Shinobu. "Shinobu has been playing with me in Japan since the early '70s, when I toured with Geoff Muldaur."

When he toured Japan last time (in 2007), Garrett began a tradition that he continued this time - the final song is "Midnight at the Oasis," featuring jazz singers who handle the original vocal made so famous in the early '70s by Maria Muldaur while the guitarist reproduces his original solo.

"This time, singer Mari Nakamura joined us at the biggest shows, in Kyoto and Tokyo; she brought the house down. When we first did it a couple of years ago, we realised that we wouldn't be able to follow it as far as the audience was concerned, so we played it as our encore."

Back home, Garrett is readying for his role as the House Band at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival (August 6-9). With Michelle Josef on drums, Ron Casat on keys, Kit Johnson on bass, Dave Babcock on horns and Rusty Reed on harmonica, the band has been an integral part of the festival for close to 25 years.

Garrett is also playing the Central Music Fest at Red Deer on Friday August 14 - with his jazz-based trio.

Jeff Healey playing live New Jeff Healey CD: Songs From the Road

Stony Plain and Ruf Records have announced the release of a new CD of material from Jeff Healey. Songs From the Road (SPCD-1343) is to be released in Canada in August.

The new CD features performances from the famed Nottoden Blues Festival in Norway from 2006, and material from 2007 appearances in London, England and the Jeff Healey Roadhouse in Toronto.

Producer (and bassist) Alec Fraser and Jeff's family have enthusiastically endorsed the release, and Cristie Healey has contributed a sleeve note for the CD.

The repertoire on the CD reflects Jeff's wide musical interests - there's some hard Chicago blues, a taste of psychedelia (a version of "White Room"), and some surprisingly bluesy versions of pop material, including: "Teach Your Children Well," "Come Together," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" which Jeff originally recorded with George Harrison. There's also an updated version of Jeff's biggest international hit, "Angel Eyes."

Special guest Randy Bachman makes an appearance on a storming version of the Muddy Waters hit "Hoochie Coochie Man," but the major credits go to Jeff's long-standing band members: Dan Noordermeer on guitar, Al Webster on drums, Dave Murphy on keyboards and Alec Fraser on bass.

As was the case with Mess of Blues, Songs From the Road will be released in Canada by Stony Plain - which has an exclusive contract with the Jeff Healey Estate - and in Europe and the United States by Ruf Records, the German blues-based label.

News desk News from Stony Plain central

TIM HUS and his hard-driving band are still playing numerous Western Canadian dates to support his Stony Plain debut, Bush Pilot Buckaroo (SPCD-1336) - but he's about to take on a completely different role: Fronting Stompin' Tom Connors's backup band on a 16-date concert tour.

Connors continues his decades-old role as a major Canadian icon - and his awareness of Tim came when "Hockey Mom" appeared on Bush Pilot Buckaroo.

The tour with Connors starts July 21 in Belleville, Ontario, runs through the Maritime provinces and Newfoundland, and finally ends at Hamilton Place August 29. The tour over, he'll have a date at Toronto's super-hip Dakota Tavern September 3, and then plays the Shelter Valley Folk Festival in Grafton, Ontario.

New releases from RONNIE EARL and DUKE ROBILLARD held the #3 and #6 spots respectively on the U.S. iTunes Blues chart after release!

JOE LOUS WALKER has a new release for Stony Plain in the pipeline. No final release date is set, but keep eyes and ears open for Between a Rock & The Blues (SPCD-1345), which is once again produced by Duke Robillard.

MARIA MULDAUR is in the studio working on her first Jug Band Project Garden Of Joy. Maria who has been called the "Mother of Americana Music," was a member of pioneering 60's groups The Even Dozen Jug Band and Jim Kweskin's Jug Band before finding fame as a solo artist. Guests will include David Grisman, John Sebastian, Dan Hicks, and Taj Mahal. Scheduled for release on Sept. 29th, Maria will be touring extensively with a Jug Band for the first time.

Another exciting project we look forward to is RORY BLOCK's followup to her highly acclaimed Blues Walkin' Like A Man (SPCD-1329) Tribute to Son House. Rory is recording around her busy schedule of dates in the US and Europe. Tentatively scheduled for this fall.

Blind Pig Blind Pig releases in Canada

Stony Plain, alongside the label's distributor Warner Music Canada, handles distribution for the Blind Pig label north of the U.S. border. Among the latest releases are some real gems:

  • COMMANDER CODY - Dopers, Drugs and Everyday Losers - Blind Pig BPCD-5128
Here's a collection of remakes of some of this veteran rock band's past hits, delivered with the same good cheer, and still rocking out 30 years on. Check out "Roll Yer Own," "Tennessee Plates," and "Last Call for Alcohol."
  • DAMON FOWLER - Sugar Shack - Blind Pig BPCD-5126
This young acoustic guitarist works out of Florida, and is building a solid reputation on the blues festival circuit. In addition to his own material, there are a couple of covers of country material by Merle Haggard and Billy Joe Shaver. Works like a treat!
  • JOHN NEMETH - Love Me Tonight - Blind Pig BPCD-5127
John Nemeth is a rising blues star; his 2007 Blind Pig release, Magic Touch, confirmed he was a singer steeped in the tradition and reminiscent of B.B. King, Ray Charles and Junior Parker, and a harmonica player of riveting intensity and virtuosity. The follow up, his fourth for the label, is another collection of fine original songs.
  • ROY ROGERS - Split Decision - Blind Pig BPCD-5130
The great slide guitarist's eighth CD for Blind Pig, this is another tour de force, still remembered for his work with the late John Lee Hooker.
  • WEBB WILDER - More Like Me - Blind Pig BPCD-5129
One of rock and roll's most inspiring cult figures, Webb Wilder knows how to party, and this tough, edgy CD demonstrates his prowess. Fact is, there aren't any more like this…

YouTube Videos to find on YouTube

  • Duke Robillard on the Ohne Filter TV show in Germany - an older clip, but a tour de force version of "Blues for T-Bone."
  • Sunny and Her Joy Boys. Ms. Crownover's gorgeous red dress is enough to make you want to see this video, and her version of "You're My Thrill" is equally beautiful.
  • Maria Muldaur offers a brief clip of "One Hour Mama" from her Stony Plain album Naughty, Bawdy and Blue.
  • Maria Muldaur in her early twenties, with Jim Kweskin's jug Band - a brief clip from Martin Scorsese's No Direction Home film on Bob Dylan.
  • Jeff Healey recorded live in London in 2007, with Randy Bachman - incredible solos, and while the picture isn't great, the playing is incendiary.

Fan Letter of the Month Fan letter of the month

"I just listened to the Ian Tyson special on CBC2. I knew it was coming and I listened to it on the Internet through every time zone. Man, this is a whole new thing; those old songs come to life in a whole new way with his new voice. I'd record his whole portfolio over again - they have such a new thing happening on them.

"But however great he sings them, it's the songs. He is something special as a songwriter. He's created so many images that will linger, and you mentioned a couple on the special. Anybody who's seen a Russell painting knows how his song nails it: "Better git'er on down before she goes."

"I don't know how to send this email on to Ian Tyson, but I sure would like him to know how much his wonderful artistry means to me. I love Alberta and all the great images and feelings for it come flooding back when I hear him sing."

Best regards,

Sunny And Her Joy Boys Media folk have their say about our artists

SUNNY AND HER JOY BOYS
Introducing Sunny and Her Joy Boys (SPCD-1341)

"The tunes here are such classics, and the musicians such pros, the listener never misses drums. It's a blast from the past that also sounds like the wave of the future." - Eric Shoaf, Vintage Guitar

"The ace guitarist, he of the intimate acquaintance with all manner of blues-based roots music, now goes into small combo swing band mode to further the ambitions of one fine vocalist of lovely mien and expressive interpretive artistry, Sunny Crownover.
"It's a most satisfying debut that marks (her) as one of the most interesting new voices on the classic pop scene." - David McGee, www.thebluegrassspecial.com

"Folks, they don't make them like this any more. Sunny and Her Joy Boys are a throwback to a long-ago, much missed era of music. Hopefully, we haven't heard the last of them. Hats off to Duke Robillard for making this dream come true." - Graham Clarke, Blues Bytes, www.bluenight.com

"This is a completely delightful disc, one that celebrates the Great American Songbook repertoire without adding any heavy interpretive or historical baggage to it." - Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

"Those that have followed Robillard's various ventures into the jazz side of the blues - as on his recent Swingin' Session disc - will find this to be a natural extension of his attempts to resurrect this great music for a new generation." - Mark Smith, www.bluessource.com

IAN TYSON
Yellowhead to Yellowstone and other Love Stories (SPCD-1339)

"If Springsteen and Mellencamp speak to the pulse of the American heartland, Tyson is their Canadian equivalent, equally intrepid, clear-eyed and compelling." - Lee Zimmerman, Goldmine

"Yellowhead to Yellowstone and Other Love Stories is one of his most eclectic and affecting song collections. More western than country, it rolls from the epic title track to a heart string-tugging elegy for the hockey commentator Don Cherry's late wife ("My Cherry Colored Rose"). Tyson hasn't lost a step as a masterful songsmith." - Gary Graff, Billboard

"Now 75, with a slightly ragged voice and a wealth of experience to draw on, Tyson delivers a great set of songs steeped in contemporary Western/cowboy metaphors and filtered through a personal lens of love and loss. Tyson's still a formidable singer and songwriter, as this new disc clearly shows." - Gene Hyde, CD Hotlist

"Whenever I see a young country star posing in a pristine cowboy hat, I shake my head and think of Ian Tyson, a real-life rancher, cowboy poet and songwriting icon who's never posed at anything in his life. That integrity shines through on his latest album.
Yellowhead is the work of a musical master: a survivor who has used his experiences to illuminate the pain of regret, the struggle to survive, and ultimately, the knowledge that life's most valuable joys are often the ones that exact the greatest toll." - Bob Cannon, Performing Songwriter Magazine

"Co-written with Stewart McDougall, the title track is a shattering tour de empathie that avoids ever-tempting maudlin sentimentality and is up to date in its understanding of nonhuman animals." - David J. Cantor, www.soundstage.com

RONNIE EARL
The Hope Radio Sessions DVD (SPDVD-1326)

"After the credits roll Ronnie sits down with Holger Petersen from Stony Plain Records to talk about his musical journey, his heroes and influences and a lesson in Earl's knowledge of blues history. This interview, like the entire musical performance, is riveting look inside the often-reclusive guitarist. He touches on personal issues without preaching and speaks to his audience in a way one rarely hears from superstar acts." - Reb Landers, www.thealternatereoot.com
