From the Hamilton Spectators Graham Rockingham...
Fans and friends of Jackie Washington will have two opportunities next week to pay tribute to the great Hamilton jazz and blues singer. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Stewart Memorial Church, 114 John St. N. "There will be some music and some people speaking from different parts of Jackie's life," said niece Shawn Washington-Purser. "The whole public is invited. In our family, we like to think that Jack was just ours but we know we shared him with all of Hamilton." As well, Washington's musical friends and colleagues are putting together an informal celebration on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Jackie Washington Rotary Park at Wellington and Simcoe streets. "We'll have a New Orleans-style band and a few speakers," said organizer Margaret Stowe, a jazz guitarist and close friend of Washington. "Bring your acoustic instrument, horn, tambourine, shaker or drum and we'll give him a New Orleans style send-off." Washington, 89, died Saturday at St. Joseph's hospital from complications from a heart attack. He was a lifelong resident of Hamilton and a member of the Canadian Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame.
